What are Google AI Overviews?

Google’s AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above the traditional search results. They answer the query in a few sentences, pull information from multiple sources, and include links to those sources for further reading.

Under the hood, AI Overviews use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): rather than relying only on what the model already knows, Google fetches fresh pages from its index and Gemini synthesizes them into one answer, then attaches citations to the pages it used. That’s how a brand earns visibility here — by being one of the sources Google grounds the answer in.

Get your brand facts right

Max out your brand mentions

    No. Google doesn’t separate AI Overviews from organic search in Search Console; it lumps the impressions and clicks together, and there’s no sign that’s changing. To see how your brand actually appears in AI Overviews, you need a third-party tool like Brand Radar.
