As time goes by, you build new links to your site, while some of the old ones pass&nbsp;away.<\/p>\n<p>That is why we were receiving many requests to start collecting historical backlink data, so that you could see all backlinks that a website used to have VS the backlinks that it has \u201clive\u201d at the present moment.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> Knowing which of your links are no longer \u201clive\u201d gives you an opportunity to restore them and improve your backlink profile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, starting 13th of August we began collecting historical data.<\/p>\n<p>Which means we have two indexes right now: <strong>Fresh<\/strong> and <strong>Live<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ahrefs-historical-index.png\" alt=\"ahrefs historical index\" width=\"700\" height=\"264\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ahrefs-historical-index.png 700w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ahrefs-historical-index-680x256.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Live Index<\/strong> - contains all links that were \u201clive\u201d on our last re-crawl;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fresh Index<\/strong> - contains all links that we\u2019ve seen \u201clive\u201d starting 13th of August <em>(including those, that were \u201cdead\u201d on our last re-crawl)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019d like to point your attention to the <strong>\u201con our last re-crawl\u201d<\/strong> phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Web pages are not carved in stone and they may go down and back up for numerous reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>hosting server downtime;<\/li>\n<li>DNS issues;<\/li>\n<li>website closed for maintenance;<\/li>\n<li>high volume of traffic;<\/li>\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the fact that the page was \u201cdown\u201d on our last re-crawl doesn\u2019t guarantee that this page is still down at this very moment <em>(and vice versa)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s the reason we\u2019re calling our second index <strong>\u201cFresh\u201d<\/strong>. The odds are that many of the pages\/links that we\u2019ve seen \u201cdown\u201d may be back online already.<\/p>\n<p>Thus our \u201cFresh\u201d index will most likely be limited to 3 months of data <em>(we didn\u2019t decide yet actually)<\/em> and as you can tell, in the course of a few months we\u2019re also going to add \u201cHistoric\u201d index, that would include all backlinks that we seen live starting from 13th of August 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Right now the difference in <strong>Fresh<\/strong> and <strong>Live<\/strong> indexes can clearly be seen at the top of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a> \u201cOverview\u201d report:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/live-vs-fresh.jpg\" alt=\"live-vs-fresh\" width=\"700\" height=\"191\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/live-vs-fresh.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/live-vs-fresh-680x186.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"><\/p>\n<p>Even though we\u2019ve only started collecting historical data a little more than a month ago, the difference between the two is clearly visible.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cDead\u201d Backlinks<\/h2>\n<p>When exporting a list of your backlinks from <strong>\u201cFresh\u201d<\/strong> index, you\u2019ll see a new column, called \u201cBacklink Status\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/backlink-status.jpg\" alt=\"backlink-status\" width=\"500\" height=\"173\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8116\"><\/p>\n<p>We have three statuses of \u201cdead\u201d backlinks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Not Found<\/strong> - the page with the backlink was not found for some reason <em>(like I said earlier, this kind of link may be back up by the time you check it)<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Removed<\/strong> - the page was ok, but we didn\u2019t find the backlink that used to be&nbsp;there;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dropped<\/strong> - we\u2019re constantly improving our index and dropping pages that we think are gibberish <em>(so the page and the link do exist, but the quality is so low that we don\u2019t want to have it in our index)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s it!<\/p>\n<p>This feature was just added and we still have tons of work as to implementing it across all our tools\/reports\/filters.<\/p>\n<p>In case you have any feedback or requests - please let me&nbsp;know!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Usually when we add a new feature to Ahrefs toolset, not many people will notice it right away (that\u2019s the reason why I started writing these \u201cwhat\u2019s new\u201d blog posts on Mondays).
