That means it\u2019s much more challenging to go from DR 69-70 than&nbsp;9-10.<\/p>\n<p>A good way to visualize this is to think about rankings in a video&nbsp;game.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you start as a \u201cScout,\u201d and it might take you a few hours to gain your \u201cRanger\u201d badge. The number of websites linking to&nbsp;you<\/h3>\n<p>In Ahrefs, we have a metric called referring domains. But it\u2019s not quite that simple because we only take \u2018followed\u2019 links into account in our DR calculations. Links with UGC, sponsored, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/nofollow-links\/\">nofollow attributes<\/a>&nbsp;won\u2019t improve DR.<\/p>\n<p>Also, subsequent links from the same website won\u2019t improve a site\u2019s DR since we count referring domains and not backlinks.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"linking-website-dr\">2. The DR score of linking domains<\/h3>\n<p>Anyone can get thousands of links from a bunch of low-quality sites. That\u2019s why we also take into account the DR score of the linking site when calculating DR.<\/p>\n<p>This means that backlinks from websites with high DR scores tend to increase your Domain Rating more than those with low DR scores.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an interesting point to know. It means that as the DR of a linking website increases, so can&nbsp;yours.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you build a link from a DR 15 website today, and the owner of that website works hard to build authority and links over time, then that same link might be from a DR 40 website in a year. So even if you only ever built that one link, your DR score would likely increase over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway here is that it pays to build links from sites that show potential, even if their DR scores are quite low at the&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p>How can you judge \u2018potential?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>First, check their content. If they\u2019re publishing high-quality stuff, they\u2019re more likely to attract high-quality links naturally over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p>Second, check their link growth in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. The number of sites each referring domain links&nbsp;to<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that you build two \u2018followed\u2019 links: one from The Guardian and one from IMDB. Both of these sites have identical DR scores, but which link would increase your Domain Rating the&nbsp;most?<\/p>\n<p>Answer: It depends on the number of sites they each link to with at least one followed link. Therefore, the link from IMDB would increase your Domain Rating more than the one from The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at how big of a difference this can make to&nbsp;DR.<\/p>\n<p>This website has one referring domain, which is IMDB. Just keep in mind that if the site you get a link from has a low DR score itself, or links out to lots of websites, the increase in Domain Rating may be negligible.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to note that building links to random pages won\u2019t always help increase your rankings or organic traffic. As that\u2019s almost certainly your end goal, you should focus on building links directly to the pages that you want to rank in Google. That will have a bigger impact on organic traffic and rankings than simply \u201cincreasing DR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We know this because we studied it. So, if you\u2019re struggling\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to indirectly increase your website (domain) authority in a \u2018meaningful\u2019 way:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#create-linkworthy-content\">Create content that people want to link&nbsp;to<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#pitch-websites\">Pitch relevant and authoritative websites<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#internally-link-to-important-pages\">Use internal linking to improve the \u2018authority\u2019 of important pages<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"create-linkworthy-content\">1. Create content that people want to link&nbsp;to<\/h3>\n<p>That means something with these three attributes:<\/p>\n<h4>Non-commercial<\/h4>\n<p>People are more likely to link to pages that aren\u2019t just about making you money. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so hard to get links to sales pages and affiliate reviews.<\/p>\n<h4>Helpful<\/h4>\n<p>There are two ways to create something helpful.<\/p>\n<p>The first is to create something with <strong>utility<\/strong>. Think blog posts, calculators, and free tools. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/backlink-checker\">free backlink checker<\/a>&nbsp;is a good example of this.
