top-ranking pages don\u2019t have a meta description<\/h2>\n<p>Crazy, right?!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"license\"><img loading=\"lazy\" position:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"license\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"874\" class=\"wp-image-34536\" https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-11-438x425.png 438w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-11-768x746.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For anyone wondering, the Spearman correlation here is 0.28, which is considered weak.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for those with descriptions, how often do they show&nbsp;up?<\/p>\n<h2>Google rewrites meta&nbsp;descriptions 62.78% of the&nbsp;time<\/h2>\n<p>Yes\u2013Google rewrites meta descriptions for the <strong>majority<\/strong>&nbsp;of search results.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"license\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"804\" class=\"wp-image-34531\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-8.png\" alt=\"p 8\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-8.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-8-476x425.png 476w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-8-768x686.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This already tells us quite a lot, but it\u2019s always more insightful to segment the&nbsp;data\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>That number drops to 59.65%&nbsp;for fat-head and rises to 65.62% for long-tails<\/h2>\n<p>We hypothesized that Google would generate descriptions more often for long-tail keywords.<\/p>\n<p>This was based on the fact that the average first-page result <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/also-rank-for-study\/\">ranks for hundreds of keywords<\/a>, and the hardcoded descriptions are usually written around the primary \u201chead\u201d keyword.<\/p>\n<p>For example, our primary target keyword for <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/youtube-keyword-tools\/\">this post<\/a>&nbsp;is \u201cyoutube keyword tools\u201d\u2014so we wrote the meta description with that in&nbsp;mind.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Google shows our hardcoded description in the results for the target keyword\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"430\" class=\"wp-image-34537\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/4-rewritten-meta-description-long-tail-1.png\" alt=\"4 rewritten meta description long tail 1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/4-rewritten-meta-description-long-tail-1.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/4-rewritten-meta-description-long-tail-1-680x183.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/4-rewritten-meta-description-long-tail-1-768x206.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/4-rewritten-meta-description-long-tail-1-1536x413.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>\u2026 but not for some of the long-tail keywords the post ranks&nbsp;for:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"453\" class=\"wp-image-34535\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/3-hardcoded-meta-description-fat-head-1.png\" alt=\"3 hardcoded meta description fat head 1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/3-hardcoded-meta-description-fat-head-1.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/3-hardcoded-meta-description-fat-head-1-680x193.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/3-hardcoded-meta-description-fat-head-1-768x217.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/3-hardcoded-meta-description-fat-head-1-1536x435.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>This happens because the hardcoded description is less relevant for the long-tails. It makes more sense for Google to choose its own snippet.<\/p>\n<p>But, what we found surprised us:<\/p>\n<p>While Google is more likely to rewrite meta descriptions for long-tail keywords, it\u2019s only by a small margin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"license\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"756\" class=\"wp-image-34533\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-9.png\" alt=\"p 9\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-9.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-9-506x425.png 506w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-9-768x645.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My guess is that the gap will grow over time as Google gets better at understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent\/\">search intent<\/a>&nbsp;and subsequently providing the most relevant search snippets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div>&nbsp;Our methodology isn\u2019t perfect here, as there\u2019s no way to identify fat-heads and long-tails with 100% certainty. Learn more <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ua7PumMTcGZl-voDW7tWIKIecicg4wsLkZFzyO6irt8\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. <\/div>\n<h2>Google is slightly less likely to rewrite meta descriptions that truncate<\/h2>\n<p>Google truncates meta descriptions that are too&nbsp;long.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1184\" height=\"352\" class=\"wp-image-34532\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2-truncated-meta-description-1.png\" alt=\"2 truncated meta description 1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2-truncated-meta-description-1.png 1184w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2-truncated-meta-description-1-680x202.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2-truncated-meta-description-1-768x228.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1184px) 100vw, 1184px\"><\/p>\n<p>But does this affect the chance of Google rewriting them? In other words, is Google more likely to generate its own snippet when your meta description is too&nbsp;long?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the&nbsp;data:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"license\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"732\" class=\"wp-image-34534\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-10.png\" alt=\"p 10\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-10.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-10-523x425.png 523w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p-10-768x625.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The results here are pretty much equal. Google rewrote 61.46% of meta descriptions that were too long and 63.69% of the&nbsp;rest.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, it seems that keeping your meta descriptions within limits doesn\u2019t change the probability of Google rewriting them&nbsp;much.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s because long descriptions are surprisingly common. 40.61% of 192,656 unique pages\u2019 descriptions we studied were too&nbsp;long.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"license\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"804\" class=\"wp-image-34540\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/10-meta-description-study-1.png\" alt=\"10 meta description study 1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/10-meta-description-study-1.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/10-meta-description-study-1-476x425.png 476w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/10-meta-description-study-1-768x686.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Should you still bother writing meta descriptions?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes.
