to syndication too.<\/p>\n<h3>Get referral traffic<\/h3>\n<p>Most websites that republish your content tell their readers where it originally appeared\u2014and link to the original source.<\/p>\n<p>If readers enjoy the syndicated piece, they may click through to your website for&nbsp;more.<\/p>\n<p>This is how James Clear got <a href=\"http:\/\/email1k.com\/course\/lesson-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tons of referral traffic<\/a>&nbsp;to his site; he was syndicating to Lifehacker.<\/p>\n<h3>Get email subscribers<\/h3>\n<p>Sarah Peterson <a href=\"https:\/\/sumo.com\/stories\/traffic-from-republishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accumulated over 1,000 new subscribers<\/a>&nbsp;by republishing her article on Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Google also understands that content often appears on more than one site for legitimate reasons, as is the case with content syndication.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re not trying to manipulate the results and rank your content multiple times; you\u2019re just trying to get more eyeballs on your content by tapping into other sites\u2019 audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Google has developed ways to account for this and has confirmed that there\u2019s no such thing as a duplicate content penalty.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">DYK Google doesn\u2019t have a duplicate content penalty, but having many URLs serving the same content burns <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/crawl-budget\/\">crawl budget<\/a> and may dilute signals <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3sW4PU8hTi\">pic.twitter.com\/3sW4PU8hTi<\/a>\u2014 Gary \u201c\u9be8\u7406\uff0f\uacbd\ub9ac\u201d Illyes (@methode) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/methode\/status\/831047566284431360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 13,&nbsp;2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>That said, syndicating content can lead to some issues, like Google ranking a syndicate over the original.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t often happen because Google has algorithms in place to identify duplicates, cluster them together, and identify the original\u2014which it then ranks for relevant terms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"798\" class=\"wp-image-34255\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-01.png\" alt=\"content syndication 01\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-01.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-01-479x425.png 479w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-01-768x681.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<p>Problems only occur when Google\u2019s algorithm incorrectly identifies a duplicate as the original.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"798\" class=\"wp-image-34273\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-02.png\" alt=\"content syndication 02\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-02.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-02-479x425.png 479w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/content-syndication-02-768x681.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, this rarely happens unless you\u2019re a tiny site syndicating to big publications. So, while it\u2019s not a huge worry, it is something to be aware&nbsp;of.<\/p>\n<p>Google used to recommend adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/canonical-tags\/\">canonical link<\/a> back to the original article to prevent this. Now, they recommend that the syndicated article be blocked from indexing. The problem is that publishers have to agree to that, and many agreements don\u2019t allow it.
