In other words, it tells the browser how the text on your web page should be displayed.<\/p>\n<p>There are hundreds of different character sets, but the two most common on the web&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UTF-8<\/strong> - Character encoding for Unicode;<\/li>\n<li><strong>ISO-8859-1<\/strong>&nbsp;- Character encoding for the Latin alphabet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See a full list <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iana.org\/assignments\/character-sets\/character-sets.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Why it\u2019s important for&nbsp;SEO<\/h3>\n<p>Using the wrong character encoding can cause some characters to display incorrectly in the browser.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"182\" class=\"wp-image-33209\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/charset-issue-1.png\" alt=\"charset issue 1\"><\/p>\n<p>Character formatting issues are bad for user experience and can cause your pages to look quite broken.<\/p>\n<p>That can lead to SEO problems like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People not wanting to link to your&nbsp;page.<\/li>\n<li>High bounce rate, low time on page, and low <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/dwell-time\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/dwell-time\/\">dwell time<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Search engines not understanding your content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But let\u2019s be real about&nbsp;this:<\/p>\n<p>Unless your page is severely broken as a result of charset issues, which is unlikely, the impact is going to be quite minimal.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s worth noting that Google <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/79812?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommends<\/a>&nbsp;using Unicode\/UTF-8 where possible.<\/p>\n<h3>Best practices<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the meta charset tag on all webpages;<\/li>\n<li>Use UTF-8 where possible;<\/li>\n<li>Use the correct syntax for your HTML version (see&nbsp;below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to add a meta charset tag to your web&nbsp;page<\/h3>\n<p>Paste the code below into the <code>&lt;head&gt;<\/code> section of your webpage:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;meta charset=\"UTF-8\"&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>If you\u2019re using HTML4 or below, use this code instead:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text\/html;charset=UTF-8\"&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure which version of HTML you\u2019re using, check your source code for <code>&lt;!doctype html&gt;<\/code>. If it\u2019s there, you\u2019re using&nbsp;HTML5.<\/p>\n<h3>How to diagnose and fix common meta charset mistakes<\/h3>\n<p>Most websites use either UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1 character encoding.<\/p>\n<p>The former is preferable to the latter.<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, it\u2019s worth checking for pages on your site that don\u2019t use UTF-8 encoding. That may solve the issue, but not always. Google hasn\u2019t used meta keywords for rankings <a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2009\/09\/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">since 2009<\/a>&nbsp;because:<\/p>\n<blockquote>[\u2026] keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta&nbsp;tag.<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bing went one step further in 2011 when they <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/the-meta-keywords-tag-lives-at-bing-why-only-spammers-should-use-it-96874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;they use the tag as a spam signal.
