We\u2019re not going to discuss all of these. Only four are required for Facebook to understand the basics of your page, and there are a couple of others that sometimes help.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go through these.<\/p>\n<h3>og:title<\/h3>\n<p>The title of your&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n<h4>Syntax<\/h4>\n<pre>&lt;meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Open Graph Meta Tags: Everything You Need to Know\" \/&gt;<\/pre>\n<h4>Best practices<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Add it to all \u201cshareable\u201d pages.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on accuracy, value, and clickability.<\/li>\n<li>Keep it short to prevent overflow. There\u2019s no official guidance on this, but 40 characters for mobile and 60 for desktop is roughly the sweet&nbsp;spot.<\/li>\n<li>Use the raw title. Don\u2019t include branding (e.g., your site&nbsp;name).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>og:url<\/h3>\n<p>The&nbsp;URL of the content.<\/p>\n<h4>Syntax<\/h4>\n<pre>&lt;meta property=\"og:url\" content=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/open-graph-meta-tags\/\" \/&gt;<\/pre>\n<h4>Best practices<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/canonical-tags\/\">canonical URL<\/a>.&nbsp;It helps consolidate all connected data, such as likes, across all the duplicate URLs posted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>og:image<\/h3>\n<p>The URL of an image for the social snippet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note that this is perhaps <strong>the most essential Open Graph tag<\/strong>&nbsp;because it occupies the most social feed real estate.<\/p>\n<h4>Syntax<\/h4>\n<pre>&lt;meta property=\"og:image\" content=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/fb-open-graph-1.jpg\" \/&gt;<\/pre>\n<h4>Best practices<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Use custom images for \u201cshareable\u201d pages (e.g., homepage, articles, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Use your logo or any other branded image for the rest of your&nbsp;pages.<\/li>\n<li>Use&nbsp;images with a 1.91:1 ratio and <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.facebook.com\/docs\/sharing\/webmasters\/images\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">minimum recommended dimensions<\/a>&nbsp;of 1200x630 for optimal clarity across all devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>og:type<\/h3>\n<p>The type of object you\u2019re sharing. Go to the editor for a post or page, then scroll down. You should see a Yoast SEO box. Yoast does this for you. It also adds other useful OG tags like image dimensions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div>&nbsp;If you don\u2019t set up an OG image and the post has a featured image, Yoast will use that by default. It will also add other Open Graph and Twitter Card tags that would be just a waste of time setting up manually\u2014site name,&nbsp;image dimensions, etc.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s also best practice to set a sitewide <code>og:image<\/code> tag. This is shown when no custom tag is set for a shared URL.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find the option to do this in Yoast\u2019s settings.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yoast &gt; Social &gt; Facebook<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Make sure the toggle is set to \u201cEnabled,\u201d then upload an appropriate image. If you don\u2019t see the change after the crawl, use the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.facebook.com\/tools\/debug\/sharing\/batch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Batch Invalidator<\/a>&nbsp;to clear the cache&nbsp;and repeat.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat this process with the Twitter Card Validator and LinkedIn Post Inspector to ensure that your content looks as intended across all networks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div>&nbsp;I\u2019ve found that only Twitterbot follows <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/robots-txt\/\">robots.txt<\/a>&nbsp;directives. Both Facebook and LinkedIn crawlers can scrape and show the content even if you disallow crawling.
