These \u201amain pieces of information help viewers decide which videos to watch. <strong>Tags can be useful if the content of your video is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, tags play a minimal role in your video\u2019s discovery.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is <em>probably<\/em>&nbsp;why most studies, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.briggsby.com\/reverse-engineering-youtube-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one from Briggsby<\/a>, show only a small positive relationship between the usage of keywords in tags and a video\u2019s ranking position.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"517\" class=\"wp-image-31579\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-seo-broad-match-video-keywords-1024x517.png\" alt=\"youtube seo broad match video keywords 1024x517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-seo-broad-match-video-keywords-1024x517.png 1024w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-seo-broad-match-video-keywords-1024x517-768x388.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-seo-broad-match-video-keywords-1024x517-680x343.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/p>\n<p>That same study found that only \u2153 of the top-ranking videos use the keyword in their tags. As Justin Briggsby points out, this \u201cmay imply that keyword tags are less critical than titles and descriptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, correlation \u2260 causation, but either way, you might be wondering, should I bother adding YouTube tags at&nbsp;all?<\/p>\n<p>Short answer: Yes. It\u2019s what we do, but we have no hard evidence that it played a significant role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/youtube-seo\/\">growth of our channel<\/a>&nbsp;of the past couple of&nbsp;years.<\/p>\n<p>We use this process only as a rough guide, and we spend no longer than 5-10 minutes adding tags to each video. Any longer is just a waste of time, in our opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s our three-step process:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Set your primary target keyword as the first&nbsp;tag<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/backlinko.com\/youtube-ranking-factors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This study<\/a>&nbsp;of 1.3 million YouTube videos found a small relationship between rankings and the presence of the keyword in the video\u2019s tags.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1101\" class=\"wp-image-31583\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keyword-in-tag-chart.png\" alt=\"keyword in tag chart\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keyword-in-tag-chart.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keyword-in-tag-chart-768x528.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keyword-in-tag-chart-618x425.png 618w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>Now, correlation \u2260 causation, so it\u2019s worth taking these results with a pinch of salt. That said, it does echo the findings from Briggsby\u2019s study mentioned in the previous section.<\/p>\n<p>Some also believe that YouTube pays the most attention to your first&nbsp;tag.<\/p>\n<p>Whether this is true is anyone\u2019s guess. But given that <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fWdkrIAzqOA?t=106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube\u2019s official guidance<\/a>&nbsp;for tags is to \u201cuse the words and phrases that make the most sense for your video,\u201d your target keyword is a good starting point.<\/p>\n<p>So we almost always use our primary keyword as our first&nbsp;tag.<\/p>\n<p>For example, look at the tags for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OMJQPqG2Uas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our keyword research video<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"155\" class=\"wp-image-31578\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keyword-research-video-tag.png\" alt=\"keyword research video tag\"><\/p>\n<p>The first tag is \u201ckeyword research\u201d because that\u2019s what we want to rank&nbsp;for.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same story for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=taU9P98zfjk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our SEO checklist video<\/a>. We want to rank for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-checklist\/\">SEO checklist<\/a>,\u201d so that\u2019s our first&nbsp;tag.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"413\" height=\"196\" class=\"wp-image-31580\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/seo-checklist-tags.png\" alt=\"seo checklist tags\"><\/p>\n<h3>2. Add common, relevant keywords from top-ranking videos<\/h3>\n<p>Install the <a href=\"https:\/\/vidiq.com\/extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free vidIQ browser extension<\/a>&nbsp;(or <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/tubebuddy\/mhkhmbddkmdggbhaaaodilponhnccicb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TubeBuddy<\/a>), then search for your target keyword on youtube.<\/p>\n<p>Open up 3-5 of the most <strong>relevant<\/strong>&nbsp;top-ranking videos in new&nbsp;tabs.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, these are the first few videos, but not always.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say that your target keyword is \u201ciPhone apps,\u201d and you\u2019ve created a video listing 10-20 of the top apps to try to rank for&nbsp;that.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the top-ranking results for that keyword:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"859\" height=\"826\" class=\"wp-image-31581\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/iphone-apps-youtube-videos.jpg\" alt=\"iphone apps youtube videos\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/iphone-apps-youtube-videos.jpg 859w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/iphone-apps-youtube-videos-768x738.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/iphone-apps-youtube-videos-442x425.jpg 442w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 859px) 100vw, 859px\"><\/p>\n<p>You can see that while the videos in positions 2-5 are topically similar, that\u2019s not the case for the video ranking in the top spot. The angle is entirely different, and it doesn\u2019t even look to be targeting this keyword.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s ignore that one and open the next&nbsp;few.<\/p>\n<p>You should see the tags for each video on the vidIQ overlay on the&nbsp;right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1108\" height=\"541\" class=\"wp-image-31584\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/best-iphone-apps-video-tags.jpg\" alt=\"best iphone apps video tags\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/best-iphone-apps-video-tags.jpg 1108w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/best-iphone-apps-video-tags-768x375.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/best-iphone-apps-video-tags-680x332.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1108px) 100vw, 1108px\"><\/p>\n<p>Consider adding <strong>relevant<\/strong>&nbsp;common tags to your&nbsp;video.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Add relevant keywords with search volume<\/h3>\n<p>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Ahrefs\u2019 Keywords Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;and set the search engine to YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>Paste in all the tags from the videos you opened in the previous step, then hit search.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> Don\u2019t worry about deduplicating&nbsp;them. Keywords Explorer does this automatically.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>You should now see the estimated monthly search volume for each keyword, sorted in descending order.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"716\" height=\"598\" class=\"wp-image-31587\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-keywords.png\" alt=\"youtube keywords\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-keywords.png 716w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-keywords-509x425.png 509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\"><\/p>\n<p>Look down the list for relevant and descriptive keywords with search volume.<\/p>\n<p>If we were doing this for our iPhone apps video, these might be \u201cbest iPhone apps,\u201d \u201cmust have iphone apps,\u201d and \u201ciOS&nbsp;apps.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> We also sometimes add a couple of generic tags. For example, our SEO tips video has tags like \u201cSEO tricks\u201d and \u201cSEO techniques\u201d that are closely related to the main target keyword. But there is a total character limit of&nbsp;500.<\/p>\n<p>However, just because you can add 500 characters doesn\u2019t mean that you always should.<\/p>\n<p>According to Briggsby\u2019s analysis of 100,000 YouTube videos, the sweet spot is around 200-300 characters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"506\" class=\"wp-image-31586\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-average-rank-by-keyword-tag-length-1024x506.png\" alt=\"youtube average rank by keyword tag length 1024x506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-average-rank-by-keyword-tag-length-1024x506.png 1024w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-average-rank-by-keyword-tag-length-1024x506-768x380.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/youtube-average-rank-by-keyword-tag-length-1024x506-680x336.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Justin Briggs says about&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think this is a direct factor but is suggestive of optimization issues associated with more prolonged keyword tag fields (off-topic terms, keyword stuffing, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Add relevant tags but don\u2019t stuff keywords or go overboard.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t mislead people<\/h3>\n<p>Using tags to \u201ctrick users into believing the content is something it is not\u201d is against <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/2801973?hl=en&amp;visit_id=637058906222563338-1980003221&amp;rd=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube\u2019s spam policy<\/a>&nbsp;and could result in your video being taken&nbsp;down<\/p>\n<p>What constitutes a misleading tag?<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t give examples, but chances are any of these things fit the&nbsp;bill:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Celebrities names<\/li>\n<li>Competitors\u2019 names<\/li>\n<li>Irrelevant keywords (e.g., \u201candroid apps\u201d for a video about iPhone apps)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bottom line: Keep your tags relevant.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t add tags to your video description<\/h3>\n<p>YouTube\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/2801973?hl=en-GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lists<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cplacing <strong>excessive<\/strong>&nbsp;tags in the video description (\u201ctag stuffing\u201d) rather than placing them as tags upon upload\u201d as another example of misleading users.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"692\" height=\"406\" class=\"wp-image-31582\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keywords-in-youtube-description.png\" alt=\"keywords in youtube description\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keywords-in-youtube-description.png 692w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/keywords-in-youtube-description-680x399.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\"><\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Don\u2019t place lists of tags in your video description.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t overthink things<\/h3>\n<p>Use common sense. If a tag looks relevant, add it. If it doesn\u2019t, don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h2>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>While it\u2019s definitely worth adding relevant and descriptive tags to your YouTube videos, it\u2019s not something worth spending a lot of time on. YouTube themselves freely admit that video tags are unimportant compared to your video\u2019s title, thumbnail, and description.
