However, there are some other good reasons to outsource content creation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You\u2019re too busy.<\/strong>&nbsp;Finding time to create content is impossible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You hate writing. <\/strong>Every time you sit down to write a post, you feel physically sick. Hemingway\u2019s quote, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing to writing. All you do is to sit at a typewriter and bleed\u201d resonates deeply with&nbsp;you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You\u2019re in an industry that requires domain expertise. <\/strong>You need a subject matter expert to create articles and provide accurate advice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You have a budget.<\/strong>&nbsp;You\u2019re already doing content marketing and can see the ROI. All you have to do is to double down and scale it&nbsp;up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have you decided that outsourcing content makes sense for your business?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the easy&nbsp;part.<\/p>\n<h2>Is hiring a team of freelance writers right for your business?<\/h2>\n<p>Hiring a freelance writer isn\u2019t the only option available if you\u2019re looking to outsource <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-creation\/\">content creation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You could hire a content marketing agency, or delegate the work to an in-house writer.<\/p>\n<p>At Ahrefs, we\u2019ve tried all three of those options.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve worked with an agency, we\u2019ve worked with freelancers, and now we\u2019re mainly in-house.<\/p>\n<p>I asked our CMO <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/tim\">Tim<\/a>&nbsp;for his advice on which to choose.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what he&nbsp;said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n<p>It is actually dependent on your content marketing knowledge. If you have no idea how to run or grow a blog, choose an agency. &nbsp;They have the expertise and can help you with your&nbsp;goals.<\/p>\n<p>However, agencies are usually contract-based and thus have higher switching costs. They also tend to have their own processes for content marketing. If you want things done a certain way, working with agencies can be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>If you have existing knowledge, it\u2019s better to work with freelancers. There are no obligations. You can work with a few, then pick the best ones. The only downside is that you have to train them in the way you&nbsp;want.<\/p>\n<p>The best solution is an in-house writer. They only work with you, and you can train them on everything content-related. There are fewer worries that he\/she will leave or disappear suddenly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"quote-info clearfix\"><div class=\"quote-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tim Soulo\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Tim_Soulo_new_ava_smalller-425x425.jpg\"><\/div><div class=\"extra-box\"><span class=\"quote-author\">Tim Soulo,<\/span> <span class=\"quote-author-job\">CMO <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/tim\" target=\"_blank\">Ahrefs<\/a><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tim\u2019s preference is a team of in-house writers, which explains the current makeup of the Ahrefs marketing team.<\/p>\n<p>However, hiring in-house writers can be difficult and expensive, so the best option for most businesses is to start by hiring freelancers because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s cheaper.<\/li>\n<li>You can hire and fire as and when you need&nbsp;to.<\/li>\n<li>You can choose to pay a fixed price per article, regardless of the time it takes the writer to complete.<\/li>\n<li>You can hire as many writers as you&nbsp;need.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s more diversity in writing style and viewpoints.<\/li>\n<li>The number of writers looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/smartblogger.com\/freelance-writing-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">freelance writing jobs<\/a> is large, so you\u2019ll have numerous options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, there are some disadvantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Writers may disappear or be unreliable.<\/li>\n<li>Writers may work for multiple clients at once, and they may not be as involved with your brand as an in-house writer.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s harder for freelancers to collaborate with other team members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To reiterate, if you\u2019re new to outsourcing content creation, then working with freelancers is almost certainly your best&nbsp;bet.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, this is the process used by some of the most successful content marketing agencies.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourgrowthmachine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Growth Machine<\/a>&nbsp;is a 6-figure content marketing agency with only five full-time staff (none of them writers!) Decide on the type of writer you&nbsp;want<\/h2>\n<p>Not all writers are created equal.<\/p>\n<p>There is a difference between a copywriter, a journalist and a technical writer. Ask a journalist to write sales copy, and your conversion rates will tank. Ask a copywriter to report on the news, and your readers will leave in droves.<\/p>\n<p>Before you begin looking for a writer, you need to be clear about what you&nbsp;want.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some questions to guide&nbsp;you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What kind of content do you need?<\/strong>&nbsp;Are you doing interview pieces or producing technical how-to guides? Do you need a new blog post, or are you only looking to update your older articles?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you need the writer to have domain expertise? <\/strong>Does your writer need to be an expert, like in the medical industry? In general, the more industry knowledge you require, the more expensive the writer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is your budget? <\/strong>There are writers available at any price. Your budget per article will determine the quality of content you&nbsp;get.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your answers will affect the entire hiring process: where you look for writers, the copy in your job listing and much more. For example, this job listing&nbsp;from Grow and Convert states in no uncertain terms that they need a business writer who can interview marketers and turn them into articles:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1234\" height=\"840\" class=\"wp-image-25635\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/grow-and-convert-job-description.png\" alt=\"grow and convert job description\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/grow-and-convert-job-description.png 1234w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/grow-and-convert-job-description-768x523.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/grow-and-convert-job-description-624x425.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1234px) 100vw, 1234px\"><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t rush into the hiring process.<\/p>\n<p>Without clarity in this step, you may end up hiring a bunch of low-quality writers (and inadvertently create more work for yourself!)<\/p>\n<h2>2. Put together a winning job listing<\/h2>\n<p>More does not always mean better.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of hiring is not to get as many applications as possible. Looking through poor applications is a waste of&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, your goal is to find only relevant and qualified people.<\/p>\n<p>To do that, you need to structure your <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-job-description\/\">job listing<\/a> so that it attracts the right kinds of writers. And this is where you include a few smart \u201cpre-qualifying\u201d tricks.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of these tricks is&nbsp;to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dissuade low-quality writers from applying;<\/li>\n<li>Allow for quick filtering of any low-quality writers that slip through the&nbsp;net;<\/li>\n<li>Encourage experienced, confident writers to take you seriously;<\/li>\n<li>Dissuade those with little or no experience in your vertical from applying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>a) Give clear instructions on how to&nbsp;apply<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s an excerpt from one of Tim\u2019s old ads for Ahrefs:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25673\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ahrefs-blog-writer-job-listing.png\" alt width=\"900\" height=\"656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ahrefs-blog-writer-job-listing.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ahrefs-blog-writer-job-listing-768x560.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ahrefs-blog-writer-job-listing-583x425.png 583w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<p>He outlines a predefined format for applications and expects writers to answer the questions in detail in a particular order.<\/p>\n<p>And this is precisely what David\u2014our ex-Editor\u2014did in his response:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25668\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25668\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25668\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/david-mcsweeney-blog-editor-reply.png\" alt width=\"900\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/david-mcsweeney-blog-editor-reply.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/david-mcsweeney-blog-editor-reply-768x458.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/david-mcsweeney-blog-editor-reply-680x406.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-25668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David\u2019s response to Tim\u2019s job listing.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He followed the format and gave detailed responses to each of Tim\u2019s questions.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the only way to do this. This little detail allows you to quickly weed out anyone who doesn\u2019t bother to read the full listing. It also helps filter applicants who are incapable of following simple instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Working with freelance writers is all about effective communication. Being able to follow instructions should be the bare minimum.<\/p>\n<p>If they can\u2019t do this during the application stage, it\u2019ll be challenging to work together in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>b) Ask insightful questions<\/h3>\n<p>You should aim to find out the answers to these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How knowledgeable are they about your&nbsp;niche?<\/li>\n<li>Have they written similar content before?<\/li>\n<li>Do they have a genuine interest in your niche? (or perhaps write about anything and everything);<\/li>\n<li>Do they have high attention to detail?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Tim\u2019s job listing, he asks five specific questions:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25678\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/5-questions-writer-application.png\" alt width=\"900\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/5-questions-writer-application.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/5-questions-writer-application-768x495.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/5-questions-writer-application-659x425.png 659w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Tim had to say when asked about his thought process:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Question #1: \u201cWhat are your favorite SEO\/marketing blogs\u2026?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This gives me an idea of how knowledgeable that person in my niche. I know pretty much all the blogs in my niche and based on what a person is reading I can tell if he\/she is a good&nbsp;fit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Question #2: \u201cDid you ever guest post on one of these&nbsp;blogs?\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>If he\/she has written for some of the best blogs in our niche, it usually gives me the \u2018green light\u2019 right away. The owner of that blog effectively did the vetting work for me when they allowed the applicant to \u2018guest post\u2019 on their&nbsp;site.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&lt;blockquote&lt;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question #3: \u201cI need links to your blog\/Twitter\/Quora\/etc. profiles\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I use this to see if the applicant is genuinely interested in the niche and what he\/she is actively sharing on social media.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Question #4: \u201cWhat\u2019s your first-hand experience within this&nbsp;niche?\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I need to know that the applicant is not just a reader\/writer, but a \u2018\u201cDO\u2019er.\u201d My goal with the Ahrefs Blog is to publish the kind of content you won\u2019t find anywhere else. I\u2019m not looking for people who can research stuff and rewrite it. I\u2019m looking for people who can DO things and write about their first\u2010hand experience.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Question #5: \u201cWhat do you think of the posts currently on the Ahrefs blog?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like to see whether a person can be honest and critical or flatter me by saying \u201cyour content is awesome, I want to be a part of it.\u201d In my opinion, good writers see flaws in everything, so if a person will criticize our existing content, that\u2019s a good sign for me personally. However, criticism for the sake of criticism means nothing. It needs to make sense and align with my vision for the Ahrefs Blog.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The answers to these questions help Tim quickly assess whether the applicant is a good fit. Do the same for your listing.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to use these exact questions. Craft your own around what\u2019s important to&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n<h3>c) Challenge them early&nbsp;on<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to add friction points to dissuade lazy writers from applying. One method is to exclude your email in the ad. Just give them your name and website.<\/p>\n<p>If they want to get in touch and apply, they\u2019ll have to make an effort to find&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, all this takes is a simple Google search.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25687\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/email-google-search.png\" alt width=\"1148\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/email-google-search.png 1148w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/email-google-search-768x170.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/email-google-search-680x150.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1148px) 100vw, 1148px\"><\/p>\n<p>They can also use some <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/find-email-address\/\">simple tools to find your email address<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d be amazed at how few writers are willing to make any effort whatsoever, which is a tell-tale sign that you <strong>shouldn\u2019t<\/strong>&nbsp;work with&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<h3>d) Give high-quality applicants a reason to&nbsp;apply<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ve done enough to dissuade low-quality applicants. This instills confidence that you\u2019re willing to pay for quality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insight into the kind of employer you are.<\/strong>&nbsp;Saying something along the lines of \u201cI\u2019m happy to give a lot of flexibility and creative freedom to the right applicant\u201d goes a long way with great writers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insight into the kind of content you want<\/strong>. Talk about your niche and give examples of material you like. If the applicant has a genuine interest in your industry, they won\u2019t find it boring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Josh also recommends not to give an <strong>exact<\/strong>&nbsp;budget&nbsp;if possible.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\"> It\u2019s much better (and more logical) to let writers tell you their rate. This is a win-win scenario. More often than not, you can negotiate and get content written for less. But are any of them <em>actually<\/em>&nbsp;worth your&nbsp;time?<\/p>\n<p>In our previous version of this article (published in 2016), Josh conducted an experiment whereby he crafted a job listing for a writing position for his SEO blog, <em>The SEO Project<\/em>&nbsp;and posted it across seven&nbsp;sites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UpWork<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PeoplePerHour.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guru.com\/login.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guru.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/problogger.com\/jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Problogger Job&nbsp;Board<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogexpose.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BlogExpose.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloggingpro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BloggingPro.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/freelancewritersden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FreelanceWritersDen.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He then evaluated those applications. Are these sites better than they were in 2016? What about the newer&nbsp;ones?<\/p>\n<p>To answer that question, I replicated Josh\u2019s experiment using <em>The SEO Project<\/em>. Similarly, I judged the best site by looking at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li># of total applicants<\/li>\n<li>% of applicants who followed my instructions<\/li>\n<li># of applicants I\u2019d consider hiring<\/li>\n<li>Cost! (where applicable)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the results:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"977\" class=\"wp-image-25645\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2019_results_image.png\" alt=\"2019 results image\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2019_results_image.png 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2019_results_image-768x834.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2019_results_image-392x425.png 392w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> Check out the full spreadsheet <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1KXkRnlcxxfzy1OIQJ_JnnnlO4ZGq_KRewrtAcdQjOeo\/copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>And here\u2019s my verdict on&nbsp;them:<\/p>\n<h3>ProBlogger Job&nbsp;Board<\/h3>\n<p>In 2016, Josh observed that ProBlogger not only sent the most applications, but also that the quality of said applications were particularly high.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the results are the&nbsp;same.<\/p>\n<p>I would happily hire seven of them (with one being a definite hire).<\/p>\n<p>The good news is: it\u2019s cheaper to post on ProBlogger today (Josh paid $99 for a 30-day listing, whereas I only paid $70).<\/p>\n<h3>BloggingPro.com<\/h3>\n<p>In 2016, Josh only received four applications from this website.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, I received eight, four of whom followed my instructions to a&nbsp;tee.<\/p>\n<p>There were also a couple of writers whom I would hire, and one I rejected because he didn\u2019t have sufficient knowledge in this particular industry.<\/p>\n<p>While I would recommend ProBlogger over this site, it wouldn\u2019t hurt to post a job listing here if you have the budget to do&nbsp;so.<\/p>\n<h3>AllFreelanceWriting<\/h3>\n<p>Josh didn\u2019t try this website in 2016. So, I tested it&nbsp;out.<\/p>\n<p>At ~$20 for a 30-day listing, I received four applications, of which one was hirable.<\/p>\n<p>That roughly equates to $5\/application or a $20 hiring fee.<\/p>\n<p>Not too shabby, but I\u2019ll still take ProBlogger any&nbsp;day.<\/p>\n<h3>AngelList<\/h3>\n<p>AngelList is a place where you can find a startup job, invest in a startup, or raise money for&nbsp;one.<\/p>\n<p>According to my friend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benjihyam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benji<\/a>, it\u2019s also a great place to find freelance writers.<\/p>\n<p>Potential writers apply for jobs via AngelList itself. As a result, the five writers that applied were unable to follow my instructions.<\/p>\n<p>The cool thing about this site is that you can check out applicants\u2019 previous experience. I expected to get more (Josh received five in&nbsp;2016.)<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, while the applicants were great at following the instructions, they were quite&nbsp;poor.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t have hired either of&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<h3>HubStaff Talent<\/h3>\n<p>HubStaff is a time tracking and productivity monitoring app. <a href=\"https:\/\/talent.hubstaff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Talent<\/a>&nbsp;is their free resource for helping companies find remote workers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s free, so I gave it a&nbsp;shot.<\/p>\n<p>However, I only received two applications, of which none were hirable.<\/p>\n<h3>PeoplePerHour<\/h3>\n<p>Fun fact: Josh started his freelance career on this website.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the roles got reversed, but Josh was disappointed at the quality of writers here. 2019 is still the same. I received fourteen applications, most of which came via the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Those that applied for the job via the platform disregarded my requirements and sent generic pitches. Those that emailed me did better and managed to follow the format.<\/p>\n<p>Though, I would still say none of them came close to being hirable.<\/p>\n<h3>Freelancer<\/h3>\n<p>None of the applicants from Freelancer were hirable.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody followed the instructions. Everyone sent a generic pitch.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t hire anyone from&nbsp;here.<\/p>\n<h3>Guru.com<\/h3>\n<p>I hated this website. I submitted a similar job listing I used on the other sites to&nbsp;Guru.<\/p>\n<p>They rejected it and told me to improve the job listing.<\/p>\n<p>However, they did not tell me <strong>what<\/strong>&nbsp;to improve but instead just insisted that I improve it.<\/p>\n<p>The worst part is finding a less-than-impressive listing that they previously approved.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1292\" height=\"874\" class=\"wp-image-25638\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/guru_com-poor-listing.png\" alt=\"guru com poor listing\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/guru_com-poor-listing.png 1292w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/guru_com-poor-listing-768x520.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/guru_com-poor-listing-628x425.png 628w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1292px) 100vw, 1292px\"><\/p>\n<p>Josh noted in 2016 that the applications he got from this site were, for want of a better word:&nbsp;junk.<\/p>\n<p>I would not recommend this&nbsp;site.<\/p>\n<h3>Freelance Writers Den, Freelance Writing &amp; BlogExpose<\/h3>\n<p>In 2016, <em>Freelance Writers Den<\/em>&nbsp;&amp; <em>BlogExpose<\/em>&nbsp;were all a complete waste of&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing has changed.<\/p>\n<p><em>BlogExpose<\/em>&nbsp;is gone, and <em>Freelance Writers Den<\/em>&nbsp;still gathers zero responses from a job ad. The same goes for <em>Freelance Writing<\/em>, a new site I&nbsp;tried.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re free, so there\u2019s nothing to lose from posting a job listing. Just don\u2019t expect much of a response.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> I also received a lot of unsolicited outreach from SEO agencies and link builders. These were templated emails that tried to persuade me to use their services. I deleted them.<\/div>\n<h2>4. Look for writers elsewhere<\/h2>\n<p>Josh is a perfect example of how to find a good writer.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an email Josh received from Tim a couple of years&nbsp;ago:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25685\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/josh-email-from-tim.png\" alt width=\"821\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/josh-email-from-tim.png 821w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/josh-email-from-tim-768x289.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/josh-email-from-tim-680x256.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 821px) 100vw, 821px\"><\/p>\n<p>He saw something Josh wrote on his blog, liked it and decided to reach&nbsp;out.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the lesson: if you\u2019re looking to hire good writers, hope is not a strategy. Don\u2019t just put up a job ad and pray that world-class writers will contact you. Make it a mission to proactively reach out to those who are a good match for your business.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s one way to do&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n<p>Find an industry site with multiple authors. If they\u2019re frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-writing\/\">writing<\/a> for the same site, they may be employed on a freelance basis, or at least willing to take on freelance work outside of their&nbsp;job.<\/p>\n<p>If you see a person\u2019s name appearing over and over again (e.g., Benjamin Brandall, who wrote a post for our blog about <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/why-seo-is-important\/\">why SEO is important<\/a>), you could go one step further and do an <code>author<\/code>&nbsp;search in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;to see if they\u2019re writing for other&nbsp;sites.<\/p>\n<p><em>Content Explorer &gt; author:[firstname] [lastname] &gt; one article per domain<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"625\" class=\"wp-image-25652\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/content-explorer-author-search.jpg\" alt=\"content explorer author search\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/content-explorer-author-search.jpg 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/content-explorer-author-search-768x533.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/content-explorer-author-search-612x425.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<p>It looks like Benjamin has written for many different sites!<\/p>\n<p>From here, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/find-email-address\/\">find their email<\/a>, reach out, and ask if they take on freelance work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"editor-note\"><div class=\"editor-title\">Editor\u2019s Note<\/div><div class=\"editor-content\">\n<p>Because I am crazy with <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-sheets-formulas-seo\/\">Google Sheets<\/a>, I made a sheet that\u2019ll help you identify the most prolific writers on a website quickly and easily. Get it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1dX-ZnsTl_7HQxseN4NDLuLxvAqc9HoLSuz1HJHPqIJI\/copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First, export&nbsp;the <strong>Top Content<\/strong>&nbsp;report from Ahrefs and import it into the sheet named \u201c1. Ahrefs import.\u201d To do that, select cell A1 then hit <em>File &gt; Import\u2026 &gt; Upload &gt; choose the CSV export from Ahrefs &gt; replace data at selected cell<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then the next sheet (labeled \u201c2. (I worked with one writer from this&nbsp;group.)<\/p>\n<p>I also posted the same thing on LinkedIn:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1086\" height=\"1034\" class=\"wp-image-25649\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/linkedin-job-posting.png\" alt=\"linkedin job posting\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/linkedin-job-posting.png 1086w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/linkedin-job-posting-768x731.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/linkedin-job-posting-446x425.png 446w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1086px) 100vw, 1086px\"><\/p>\n<p>I eventually found two writers to work with via this&nbsp;post.<\/p>\n<h2>Found a good writer?<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some tips for hiring and working with&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<h3>a) Start&nbsp;with a \u201ctest article\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>A test article is an important stepping stone for both parties.<\/p>\n<p>Like a probation period, it helps you figure out how skilled and reliable the writer is, and whether they\u2019re a good fit for your business.<\/p>\n<p>You will&nbsp;usually negotiate a test article at a slightly lower rate. However, some writers will refuse to work at this discounted rate. At that point, rely on your intuition. If the writer didn\u2019t seem that great initially, it\u2019s probably safe to say goodbye. If the writer seems promising, it may be worth risking the money to see if they fit the&nbsp;bill.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Josh reflecting on his early&nbsp;days:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\"> When Tim initially hired me, he hired me to write a test article. He gave me 3-4 topics to choose from, and we agreed on a fixed fee for the post. I chose to write about <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/dwell-time\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/dwell-time\/\">dwell time<\/a>. He explained that if all went well with the test, he would want two articles per month from me going forward. The rest is history.&nbsp;<\/div><div class=\"quote-info clearfix\"><div class=\"quote-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Joshua Hardwick\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/photo-of-me-425x425.jpg\"><\/div><div class=\"extra-box\"><span class=\"quote-author\">Joshua Hardwick,<\/span> <span class=\"quote-author-job\">Head of Content <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ahrefs<\/a><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p>Take note that this stage is not for you to lowball the writer into writing a free article for you. If you don\u2019t like the article, pay them for their time and move&nbsp;on.<\/p>\n<p>Your reputation matters. If word gets out, hiring writers will get even more difficult.<\/p>\n<h3>b) Onboarding<\/h3>\n<p>With all \u201ctests\u201d passed, you can finally hire them \u201cofficially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to communicate your business goals, company core values, target audience, and any other important marketing and business information. Send them an editorial guide to ensure that they understand how to format their posts for your&nbsp;blog.<\/p>\n<p>Give them access to your communication tools (e.g., Slack). Discuss with them how to track their hours and how payment will work. Process all administrative matters, so the work going forward is a&nbsp;cinch.<\/p>\n<p>Teach them how your product works. At <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/\">Ahrefs<\/a>, we use our articles to educate users on how to use our product. To do that successfully, our writers must be familiar with our toolset. Knowing the ins and outs of our product allows writers to weave use cases into content easily.<\/p>\n<h3>c) Working together<\/h3>\n<p>Working with one writer is easy. Working with many? You\u2019ll need a process.<\/p>\n<p>There is no specific way of doing this. Every company has its own. Instead of giving you the \u201cone true way,\u201d I\u2019ll share the \u201cbehind the scenes\u201d look at how Ahrefs creates content.<\/p>\n<p>We use this process for both our in-house and freelance writers.<\/p>\n<p>It starts with a list of potential topic ideas. When Josh was freelancing, Tim used to send a list of ideas to&nbsp;him:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25693\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/topic-ideas-for-ahrefs-blog.png\" alt width=\"899\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/topic-ideas-for-ahrefs-blog.png 899w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/topic-ideas-for-ahrefs-blog-768x314.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/topic-ideas-for-ahrefs-blog-680x278.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\"><\/p>\n<p>From this list, we\u2019re free to choose the topics that interest us&nbsp;most.<\/p>\n<p>We then add the chosen topic(s) to our project management tool, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notion.so\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Notion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"386\" class=\"wp-image-25654\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/SQ___Rebekah_Topics.png\" alt=\"SQ Rebekah Topics\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/SQ___Rebekah_Topics.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/SQ___Rebekah_Topics-768x185.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/SQ___Rebekah_Topics-680x164.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>After reviewing the SERPs and brainstorming ideas (via <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-copywriting\/\">our copywriting process<\/a>), we create a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-outline\/\">rough outline<\/a> for the&nbsp;post.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example for this post (meta!):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1292\" height=\"816\" class=\"wp-image-25637\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/outsourcing-writers-outline.png\" alt=\"outsourcing writers outline\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/outsourcing-writers-outline.png 1292w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/outsourcing-writers-outline-768x485.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/outsourcing-writers-outline-673x425.png 673w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1292px) 100vw, 1292px\"><\/p>\n<p>In the document, I describe my thought process to Josh. I\u2019ll tell him what I think searchers are looking for (search intent), what angle we should take, suggest a few headlines and show him an outline of the subtopics we should cover.<\/p>\n<p>For this, we use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/docs\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Docs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Josh then comments on whether he agrees and if the outline works. If we get the go ahead, we\u2019ll then start working on our first draft. (If not, it\u2019s back to the drawing board.)<\/p>\n<p>Once the draft is complete, Josh will review and give his comments. However, we\u2019re able to collaborate (almost) as efficiently as we would in-person, which allows us to overcome one of the main drawbacks of outsourced content creation.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it takes some time and effort on your part, but it pays off in the long&nbsp;run.<\/p>\n<h3>d) Keep them motivated<\/h3>\n<p>Freelancers are not technically employees, but the relationship is still a potentially long-term one.<\/p>\n<p>If you stumble upon a great writer, you need to keep them motivated so that they stay with you for as long as possible. (Josh wrote for Ahrefs for 18 months before turning full-time!)<\/p>\n<p>Monetary incentives are one way to do this. But, don\u2019t neglect the softer, human approach.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make them feel part of the&nbsp;team.<\/li>\n<li>Let them know their work is important.<\/li>\n<li>Share company news with&nbsp;them.<\/li>\n<li>Show them performance metrics so that they know what they\u2019re doing is working.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the best things you can do for a freelancer is to give them an outside perspective. Offer feedback on their writing and help them improve. As Ryan Holiday says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Perennial-Seller-Making-Marketing-Lasts\/dp\/0143109014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Perennial Seller<\/a>, <em>\u201cNobody creates flawless first drafts. And nobody creates better second drafts without the intervention of someone else.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Who knows?<\/p>\n<p>They may be freelancers now. But they might eventually decide to come onboard full-time too.<\/p>\n<h2>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>This entire article is based on our experience running and growing the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/\">Ahrefs blog<\/a>&nbsp;via an outsourced team.<\/p>\n<p>Though we\u2019re mostly in-house now, we wouldn\u2019t have been able to grow the blog to where it is today without freelance writers.
