See&nbsp;search traffic for referring pages<\/h2>\n<p>This was our second most popular feature request for <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Site Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.canny.io\/site-explorer?sort=top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canny<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1302\" height=\"598\" class=\"wp-image-20149\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Site_Explorer___Backlinks___Ahrefs.png\" alt=\"Site Explorer Backlinks Ahrefs\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Site_Explorer___Backlinks___Ahrefs.png 1302w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Site_Explorer___Backlinks___Ahrefs-768x353.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Site_Explorer___Backlinks___Ahrefs-680x312.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1302px) 100vw, 1302px\"><\/p>\n<p>In all honesty, this functionality has been in the pipeline for a&nbsp;while.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>we have a huge database of backlinks;<\/li>\n<li>and we have a huge database of pages with their monthly search traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So why not merge these two data sets and start showing how much traffic each of the linking pages gets, and how many keywords for which each page&nbsp;ranks?<\/p>\n<p>And, <strong>DONE<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"695\" class=\"wp-image-20155\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_grouped_by_Similar_Links__ahrefs_com_blog_on_Ahrefs.png\" alt=\"External Backlinks grouped by Similar Links ahrefs com blog on Ahrefs\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_grouped_by_Similar_Links__ahrefs_com_blog_on_Ahrefs.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_grouped_by_Similar_Links__ahrefs_com_blog_on_Ahrefs-768x334.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_grouped_by_Similar_Links__ahrefs_com_blog_on_Ahrefs-680x295.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>This is something professional SEOs have been doing <strong>manually<\/strong>&nbsp;for a&nbsp;while.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1172\" height=\"634\" class=\"wp-image-20153\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Slack_-_Technical_SEO.png\" alt=\"Slack Technical SEO\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Slack_-_Technical_SEO.png 1172w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Slack_-_Technical_SEO-768x415.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Slack_-_Technical_SEO-680x368.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1172px) 100vw, 1172px\"><\/p>\n<p>Now, there\u2019s no need for presumably messy VLOOKUPs, as this functionality resides&nbsp;in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Site Explorer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m also super proud to report that (as of today) we\u2019re the only SEO tool that has managed to merge these two data points.<\/p>\n<p>But why is this such a significant update?<\/p>\n<p>Rumor has it that Google may be using referral traffic from backlinks to measure their \u201cweight\u201d and influence on rankings.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, we\u2019ve already seen steps in this direction with their infamous \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seobythesea.com\/2010\/05\/googles-reasonable-surfer-how-the-value-of-a-link-may-differ-based-upon-link-and-document-features-and-user-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reasonable surfer<\/a>\u201d&nbsp;and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gofishdigital.com\/did-the-groundhog-update-just-take-place-at-google\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determining a quality measure for a resource<\/a>\u201d&nbsp;patents. Both of which Google filed more than six years&nbsp;ago.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Slawski touched upon this in <a href=\"https:\/\/gofishdigital.com\/did-the-groundhog-update-just-take-place-at-google\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of his posts<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\"> Another way to change how much PageRank might be passed along with a link might be based upon <strong>the amount of traffic a resource might receive from links<\/strong><em>, and the dwell times of traffic from those links, whether they might be short clicks, medium clicks, or long clicks.&nbsp;<\/em><\/div><div class=\"quote-info clearfix\"><div class=\"quote-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bill Slawski\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/bill-slawski.jpg\"><\/div><div class=\"extra-box\"><span class=\"quote-author\">Bill Slawski,<\/span> <span class=\"quote-author-job\">Director of SEO Research <a href=\"https:\/\/gofishdigital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Go Fish Digital<\/a><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, and here\u2019s what Google\u2019s John Mueller said about the \u201cpopularity\u201d of referring pages back in 2013 (h\/t <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Marie_Haynes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marie Haynes<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">John M:\u201cIf it\u2019s something that nobody ever goes to anymore then it might be that those links are not as valuable.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NIhd2szpGM\">https:\/\/t.co\/NIhd2szpGM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Marie Haynes (@Marie_Haynes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Marie_Haynes\/status\/900060566328418304?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 22,&nbsp;2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So, I\u2019m hoping you\u2019re as excited as we are about our first steps in this direction.&nbsp;\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>But let me address a few more potential concerns about this new&nbsp;data:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q1: <\/strong>Is that the total traffic of the referring page, or only organic search traffic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A1:<\/strong>&nbsp;That is organic search traffic of a referral page only. As of today, Ahrefs doesn\u2019t estimate the total traffic to websites or&nbsp;pages.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Can I sort the \u201cBacklinks\u201d by Traffic &amp; Keywords columns? Can I use filtering?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A2: <\/strong>No. Not right now. But we\u2019re going to release both sorting and filtering asap. In the meantime, this can be done in Excel (or Google Sheets)\u2014just export the data from Ahrefs and into a spreadsheet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q3:<\/strong>&nbsp;Can you estimate how much referral traffic each link passes?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A3:<\/strong>&nbsp;No, not at the moment. But we\u2019re already thinking of ways we could do this in the future. <em>(Watch this&nbsp;space!)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>2. Backlinks to canonicalized&nbsp;pages are now also \u201ctransferred\u201d to the \u201coriginal\u201d page<\/h2>\n<p>In the SEO community, the general&nbsp;consensus is that backlinks to canonicalized pages get treated kind of like 301 redirects to the master copy of the&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> When I say \u201ccanonicalized pages,\u201d I mean those with a non-self-referential rel=\u201ccanonical\u201d tag.<\/div>\n<p>So they pass the \u201clink equity\u201d from the \u201ccanonicalized\u201d page to the original.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/methode\/status\/757923179641839616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unlike with 301 redirects<\/a>, some of it gets lost in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you an example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/socialmedia\/2014\/04\/06\/ideal-length-everything-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This article from TheNextWeb<\/a>&nbsp;is actually a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/the-ideal-length-of-everything-online-according-to-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article from Bufferapp blog<\/a>. They state this with a \u201crel=canonical\u201d tag in the source code.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"156\" class=\"wp-image-20156\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_https___thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length-everything-internet_.png\" alt=\"view source https thenextweb com socialmedia 2014 04 06 ideal length everything internet \" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_https___thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length-everything-internet_.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_https___thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length-everything-internet_-768x75.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_https___thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length-everything-internet_-680x66.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>According to Ahrefs, this \u201ccopied\u201d article has 758 backlinks from 90 referring domains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1228\" height=\"376\" class=\"wp-image-20151\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length_on_Ahrefs.png\" alt=\"Overview thenextweb com socialmedia 2014 04 06 ideal length on Ahrefs\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length_on_Ahrefs.png 1228w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length_on_Ahrefs-768x235.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_thenextweb_com_socialmedia_2014_04_06_ideal-length_on_Ahrefs-680x208.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1228px) 100vw, 1228px\"><\/p>\n<p>So wouldn\u2019t it make sense to attribute all these backlinks to the original post on Buffer\u2019s blog?<\/p>\n<p><strong>YES.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, until today, Ahrefs didn\u2019t \u201cforward\u201d all these \u201crel=canonical links\u201d from the copy to the original.<\/p>\n<p>But now we&nbsp;do!<\/p>\n<p>If you browse backlinks of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/the-ideal-length-of-everything-online-according-to-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Bufferapp article<\/a>, you\u2019ll now see the backlinks of <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/socialmedia\/2014\/04\/06\/ideal-length-everything-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its copy at TheNextWeb<\/a>&nbsp;among them:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"548\" class=\"wp-image-20157\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_blog_bufferapp_com_the-ideal-length-of-everything-_on_Ahrefs.png\" alt=\"External Backlinks blog bufferapp com the ideal length of everything on Ahrefs\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_blog_bufferapp_com_the-ideal-length-of-everything-_on_Ahrefs.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_blog_bufferapp_com_the-ideal-length-of-everything-_on_Ahrefs-768x263.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/External_Backlinks_blog_bufferapp_com_the-ideal-length-of-everything-_on_Ahrefs-680x233.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>If that seems hard to grasp, try&nbsp;this:<\/p>\n<p>Grab any backlink of TheNextWeb article and try to find it among the backlinks of Bufferapp article. You should see it replicated across both&nbsp;pages.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> Because we only implemented this new \u201crule\u201d a week ago, we haven\u2019t yet had a chance to re-crawl the entire web. So not all \u201ccanonical links\u201d will be attributed to the \u201coriginal\u201d pages. But this will take care of itself over&nbsp;time.<\/div>\n<p>Let me also illustrate the \u201cbefore\u201d and \u201cafter\u201d of how we calculate \u201ccanonical links.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"582\" class=\"wp-image-20154\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/canonical-links-before-after.jpg\" alt=\"canonical links before after\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/canonical-links-before-after.jpg 900w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/canonical-links-before-after-768x497.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/canonical-links-before-after-657x425.jpg 657w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"><\/p>\n<p>But that was the example of a so-called \u201ccross-domain\u201d canonicalized page.<\/p>\n<p>The same principle applies to internal pages&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The homepage of <a href=\"http:\/\/php.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/php.net\/<\/a>&nbsp;for some reason canonicalizes&nbsp;to <a href=\"http:\/\/php.net\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/php.net\/index.php<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1148\" height=\"146\" class=\"wp-image-20150\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_php_net.png\" alt=\"view source php net\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_php_net.png 1148w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_php_net-768x98.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/view-source_php_net-680x86.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1148px) 100vw, 1148px\"><\/p>\n<p>And because we\u2019re now \u201ctransferring\u201d all links from a canonicalized copy to the \u201coriginal\u201d page, here\u2019s what happens to the backlink profile of <a href=\"http:\/\/php.net\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/php.net\/index.php<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1426\" height=\"544\" class=\"wp-image-20152\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_php_net_index_php_on_Ahrefs.png\" alt=\"Overview php net index php on Ahrefs\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_php_net_index_php_on_Ahrefs.png 1426w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_php_net_index_php_on_Ahrefs-768x293.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Overview_php_net_index_php_on_Ahrefs-680x259.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1426px) 100vw, 1426px\"><\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s tackle any potential concerns and questions, shall&nbsp;we?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q1:<\/strong>&nbsp;Can I filter rel=canonical links only? Or can I filter them out from a list of backlinks?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A1:<\/strong>&nbsp;Right now we don\u2019t have any filtering options for \u201ccanonical links,\u201d but we do have plans to add&nbsp;them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Will backlinks still show up for canonicalized pages in Ahrefs?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A2:<\/strong>&nbsp;Yes. We effectively just duplicate the backlinks from the canonicalized page to the original page.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>3. Improved crawling speed &amp; efficiency<\/h2>\n<p>This last point is not something that has happened to Ahrefs\u2019 backlink index recently. It\u2019s more of a reminder about the ongoing improvements that we\u2019re making.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re committed to retaining our hard-earned reputation as the tool with the best and most reliable backlink index.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, our CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/botsbreeder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmitry<\/a>, is personally overseeing most of the backend development to make sure that our users always have access to the best-in-class data.<\/p>\n<p>Just a week ago we reached a new milestone\u2014<strong>201 BILLION crawled pages in our index<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ahrefs has reached 201B pages in Ahrefs\u2019 Live Index today. All-time high! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YuDxglAdGy\">pic.twitter.com\/YuDxglAdGy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dmitry Gerasimenko (@botsbreeder) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/botsbreeder\/status\/983965905372700672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 11,&nbsp;2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>And in the next few months, we\u2019re going to move our crawling infrastructure to brand new servers with latest&nbsp;generation CPUs.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also testing a new and unique approach to web crawling that should allow us to discover new pages, and re-crawl the \u201cknown\u201d ones, even faster.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we have quite a few exciting updates in development.
