Real Website Benchmarks (June&nbsp;2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"intro-txt\">We pulled anonymized Google Search Console data from over 400,000 websites and measured the real organic CTR for&nbsp;each.<\/div>\n<p>In a nutshell: for a whole website, a good organic CTR usually falls between <strong>1% and 2%<\/strong>. But that figure varies a lot by industry, authority, and website size.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we break down median organic CTR by industry, by Domain Rating (DR), and by website size\u2014then look at why CTR is falling across the board, thanks to AI Overviews and AI search.<\/p>\n<div class=\"intro-tok\" id=\"intro_tok\" style=\"display:none;\"><div class=\"intro-title\">Contents<\/div><a href=\"#\" class=\"expand-dots\"><span><\/span><span><\/span><span><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Methodology<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<p>This article is updated with fresh data every month by <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/agent-a\">Agent A<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>This is data from real websites.<\/strong> These benchmarks are built from anonymized, aggregated Google Search Console data from 422,421 real websites. We take each site\u2019s actual clicks and impressions straight from GSC, aggregate them, and report the figures for the latest complete month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This is whole-site CTR, not position-1 CTR.<\/strong> For each site we divide its total clicks by its total impressions for the month. That\u2019s why these numbers (low single digits) sit far below the \u201cposition 1 \u2248 30\u201340%\u201d figures you\u2019ll see elsewhere, and why they (sadly) match the CTR in your own Search Console overview.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We report the median, not the average.<\/strong> A few giant sites (think Wikipedia or Amazon) pull averages up and flatter the typical site. The median\u2014the site in the middle of each group\u2014is the better benchmark. Part of the reason is that these SERPs stay\u2014ironically\u2014very clean. Our study of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overview-triggers\/\">what triggers AI Overviews<\/a> found only 4% of NSFW queries return an AI Overview, so there\u2019s rarely an AI answer (or other SERP feature) intercepting the&nbsp;click.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The \u201canswer-heavy\u201d categories sit at the bottom<\/strong>, and they\u2019re the same categories that trigger the most AI Overviews. Pets &amp; Animals (0.80% CTR here) trigger an AIO on 36.8% of queries; Health (1.12%) on 43.0%; Science (1.36%) on 43.6%. When Google answers the question on the page, fewer people click through.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Informational and question queries are the most exposed.<\/strong> AI Overviews appear on 57.9% of all question queries, and 99.9% of AIOs show on informational intent. DR doesn\u2019t show up in the SERP, and nobody clicks a result because of its referring-domain count. What\u2019s probably happening is that the same brands recognizable enough to earn a high DR are also the brands searchers recognize and trust in the results\u2014so they get the click. DR is a proxy for that recognition, not the cause of&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway for newer sites: a sub-1% CTR isn\u2019t a failure, it\u2019s the norm when you\u2019re under DR 40. Every one of them gives a searcher a reason not to click. AI Overviews didn\u2019t start this trend\u2014they <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-serp-features-have-evolved-in-the-ai-era\/\">accelerated a decline that\u2019s been underway for a long time<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI Overviews suppress clicks by ~58%.<\/strong> Our updated research found that when an AI Overview is present, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks-update\/\">clicks to the top organic result fall by roughly <strong>58%<\/strong> <\/a>compared to the same query without one. That\u2019s a sharp jump from the ~34.5% drop we measured in our earlier study. The effect is getting worse, not better, as AI Overviews mature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The most-affected queries are exactly the ones that already had low CTR.<\/strong> AI Overviews lean heavily toward informational and question searches (<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overview-triggers\/\">57.9% of question queries trigger one<\/a>). So the answer-heavy industries at the bottom of our table aren\u2019t just losing clicks to a clean SERP feature anymore \u2014 they\u2019re losing them to a full AI answer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clean SERPs still pay.<\/strong> When no AI Overview appears, organic CTR has actually held up or risen, because there\u2019s less competition for the click on those results. The pages that suffer are the ones whose queries get an AI answer slapped on&nbsp;top.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">What this means for your benchmark<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<p>Don\u2019t compare yourself to a position-one ideal. Compare against your <strong>industry\u2019s median<\/strong> (the tables above), and watch the relationship between impressions and clicks.
