Google blends AI Overview data into standard organic search, and doesn\u2019t give you tools in Search Console or GA4 to identify AI Overview impressions, citations, or clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any click in an AI Overview will either show up as <code>google \/ organic<\/code> or appear with <code>no referrer<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I mean. The source simply showed: <code>Google<\/code>, and the channel: <code>Search<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/descriptive-blog-illustration-for-accessibility.gif\" alt=\"Descriptive blog illustration for accessibility\" class=\"wp-image-194932\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The only way to track AI Overviews in Google properties is through indirect signals and workarounds\u2014which we\u2019ll get to&nbsp;later.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"further-reading\"><div class=\"reading-title\">Further reading<\/div><div class=\"reading-content\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/track-analyze-ai-traffic\/\">How to Track and Analyze Your AI Traffic<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-rank-in-ai-overviews\/\">How to Rank in AI Overviews: What Actually Works (Based on Data, Not Speculation)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-194930-_3bf804dk9dqi\"><\/a>AI Overviews are always changing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tracking AI Overviews is not a perfect science because AIOs are dynamic and constantly changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to track brand mentions in AIOs? Be aware that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overview-change\/\">AI Overview content changes<\/a> <strong>70% of the time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thinking of tracking citations? Track AI Overview traffic&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned earlier, Google doesn\u2019t neatly package up AI Overview traffic for&nbsp;us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here on in, I\u2019ll be walking you through indirect signals and workarounds for tracking AIOs\u2014and, fair warning, they\u2019re a bit trickier than the methods I\u2019ve covered above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such signal is the <code>#:~:text=<\/code> URL fragment, which Google sometimes appends to AI Overview clicks to scroll users to the relevant, highlighted passage on the&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my experience, these fragments tend to show up for long-tail AI Overview queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of what I mean. come with limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basic one above, for example, is constrained by API limits (SERPapi\u2019s free plan allows just 250 searches\u2014I was nearly out by day&nbsp;two).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also have to supply the keywords yourself, which means no \u201cunknown\u201d keyword ideas and opportunities, and you could waste a fair few API credits just finding out which keywords return an AI Overview in the first instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vibecoded AI trackers also tend to miss valuable features like actual AI Overview responses, brand mentions, competitor SoV trends, and visibility contextualized against other AI platforms\u2014e.g. AI&nbsp;Mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, if you\u2019re willing to trade scale and depth for speed and cost, they can give you some actionable AI Overview data!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-194930-_4s1208pwx5zh\"><\/a>Wrapping up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The traditional search funnel assumed users would visit your site to find answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t happen so much anymore.
