{"id":194802,"date":"2026-01-20T11:17:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T16:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/?p=194802"},"modified":"2026-03-18T04:29:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T09:29:38","slug":"how-to-rank-in-ai-overviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-rank-in-ai-overviews\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Rank in AI Overviews: What Actually Works (Based on Data, Not Speculation)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"intro-txt\">Most advice on ranking in AI Overviews is speculative, so we\u2019ve analyzed millions of AI Overview responses, reviewed third-party research, and studied Google\u2019s guidance to find out what actually works.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our own <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks\/\">study shows that AI Overviews<\/a> have caused click-through rate drops of 34.5%, with new research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seerinteractive.com\/insights\/aio-impact-on-google-ctr-september-2025-update\">Seer Interactive reporting drops as high as 61%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/07\/22\/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results\/\">research from Pew<\/a> shows users who encounter an AI summary click on a traditional search result in just 8% of visits, compared to 15% without one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI Overviews are eating traffic left and right, but they\u2019ve become part of the search landscape, and we have no choice but to navigate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the SERPs are more about awareness, and less about traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you don\u2019t rank in an AI Overview, you don\u2019t get seen. Don\u2019t focus on content length\u2014focus on matching searcher intent&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI Overviews don\u2019t care how long your blog is\u2014they care how well your content answers the&nbsp;query.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our research shows near-zero correlation (Spearman ~0.04) between <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/short-vs-long-content-in-ai-overviews\/\">word count and AI citations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your main goal should be to answer the user\u2019s query directly and early on\u2014burying the lede just delays a Large Language Model\u2019s (LLM\u2019s) semantic understanding of your content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a few months back I updated a piece of declining content. It\u2019s also crucial for search visibility, since it contributes to the knowledge graphs that search engines are built&nbsp;on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, structured data means you\u2019re more likely to be included in the SERPs, which, in turn, puts you in the selection pool for AI Overviews during RAG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we don\u2019t have definitive proof that schema markup helps you
