to Choose the Best Prompts to Monitor Your AI Search Visibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"intro-txt\">Now that Ahrefs users can track AI visibility for the exact queries they care about, many people are wondering which terms they should monitor.<\/div>\n<p>After all, conversing with AI is unlike how we would traditionally search, since requests can be far more detailed, or occur in the middle of longer conversations.<\/p>\n<p>AI responses are also less consistent than organic search results, with both brand recommendations and cited URLs changing from one minute to the&nbsp;next.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019m going to share the tracking framework and sources of queries that we think make the most&nbsp;sense.<\/p>\n<p>If you already know what you want to track, custom prompt functionality in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/brand-radar\/\">Brand Radar<\/a> allows you to monitor responses across the locations and platforms of your choice, on a daily, weekly, topics<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Prompt tracking has been a controversial topic over the past few months, with a common critique being that AI response volatility and personalization make it difficult to know how well your brand is actually performing.<\/p>\n<p>Platforms don\u2019t directly share the queries users are entering, or how often, meaning it\u2019s also possible you\u2019re tracking visibility for phrases no one actually searches.<\/p>\n<p>Others argue directional data is better than none at all, and at the very least, you should be tracking whether what AI \u201cthinks\u201d of you matches up to reality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At Ahrefs, we understand we\u2019re not working with perfect data, but believe there are insights to be gained from responses that we can act&nbsp;on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a broader view on prompt monitoring, here\u2019s our overall take:<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-509\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-509 tablepress-responsive even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Focus on the results of individual prompts<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Group similar prompts and analyze commonalities in aggregate results<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr You can always expand later<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-509 from cache -->\n<p>Identifying potential action steps is a big part of our focus when analyzing responses.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when we launch new features like custom prompt tracking (meta, I know), we want to know whether AI responses reflect that Ahrefs now has this functionality, or instead reference dated sources.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-195063\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ai-mode-ahrefs.jpg\" alt width=\"1200\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ai-mode-ahrefs.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ai-mode-ahrefs-680x322.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ai-mode-ahrefs-768x364.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"><\/p>\n<p>Monitoring multiple AI platforms surfaces brand mentions on sites that aren\u2019t just prominent on Google (where SEOs are traditionally focused), but across Bing, Brave Search, and custom indexes.<\/p>\n<p>Besides response accuracy, we primarily look for commonly cited websites to connect with, frequently mentioned SEO platform features and use cases to better cover, and how we\u2019re positioned amongst competitors for our key offerings.<\/p>\n<p>That said, we\u2019re not solely focused on tracking custom prompts.<\/p>\n<p>AI bot activity in server logs, traffic from AI platforms, traditional search performance, and insights from tens of millions of prompts in Brand Radar also form part of our monitoring.<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">A note on prompt volume<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<p>My colleague Patrick Stox has an upcoming report which suggests that, after excluding everything else people use LLMs for, search-like interactions on ChatGPT have around ~12% of the volume of Google.<\/p>\n<p>Major AI platforms don\u2019t share their users\u2019 query data, so only they know exactly how often specific questions are&nbsp;asked.<\/p>\n<p>While there are third-party providers of some actual conversation data, we\u2019ve seen them used to estimate query volumes significantly higher than we would stand&nbsp;by.<\/p>\n<p>Our current approach is to anchor most of our prompts around traditional search terms, where we have more reliable data on their popularity.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, \u201csynthetic\u201d variations of traditional search terms won\u2019t perfectly mirror how people query AI, but can help to prioritize monitoring topics with proven interest.<br>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s dive more into grouping similar points, as it\u2019s an important part of how we view prompt tracking overall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" id=\"section1\"><a class=\"subhead-anchor\" data-tip=\"tooltip__copielink\" rel=\"#section1\"><svg width=\"19\" height=\"19\" viewBox=\"0 0 14 14\" style><g fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\"><path d=\"M0 0h14v14H0z\" \/><path d=\"M7.45 9.887l-1.62 1.621c-.92.92-2.418.92-3.338 0a2.364 2.364 0 0 1 0-3.339l1.62-1.62-1.273-1.272-1.62 1.62a4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.885 5.884l1.62-1.62L7.45 9.886zM5.527 5.135L7.17 3.492c.92-.92 2.418-.92 3.339 0 .92.92.92 2.418 0 3.339L8.866 8.473l1.272 1.273 1.644-1.643A4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.897 2.22L4.254 3.863l1.272 1.272zm-.66 3.998a.749.749 0 0 1 0-1.06l2.208-2.206a.749.749 0 1 1 1.06 1.06L5.928 9.133a.75.75 0 0 1-1.061 0z\" style \/><\/g><\/svg><\/a><div class=\"link-text\" data-anchor=\"A prompt clustering framework\" data-section=\"section-two\">\n<h2>The framework: track relevant groups of prompts, not individual responses<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Ask ChatGPT what the best gym management software is, and Wodify and PushPress might top their recommendations. A few seconds later, Mindbody might be the best solution, accompanied by a listicle where it featured in second place.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve visualized this \u201cranking\u201d volatility in a <a href=\"https:\/\/detailed.com\/drift\/\">free tool on Detailed.com<\/a>, inspired by a <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/new-research-ais-are-highly-inconsistent-when-recommending-brands-or-products-marketers-should-take-care-when-tracking-ai-visibility\/\">report<\/a> from Sparktoro CEO Rand Fishkin.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, we recommend grouping related prompts to get a directional, aggregate overview of response commonalities, rather than prioritizing any individual result.<\/p>\n<p>These prompt clusters can be defined by intent, the marketing funnel stage they belong to, the products and services you offer, or anything else that makes sense for your business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The following examples were primarily inspired by questions in Google\u2019s \u2018People Also Ask\u2019 SERP feature<\/strong>, then expanded upon with other data sources.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-510\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-510 tablepress-responsive tablepress-ahrefs-width-720px\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Cluster Angle<br>\n<p style=\"font-size:11px;line-height:14px;color:grey;font-weight:500;margin-top:5px\">Different clusters will make sense, depending on the business you\u2019re in<\/p><\/th><th class=\"column-2\">Potential data source<br>\n<p style=\"font-size:11px;line-height:14px;color:grey;font-weight:500;margin-top:5px\">There\u2019s benefit in combining sources, such as customer support queries with GSC&nbsp;data<\/p><\/th><th class=\"column-3\">Example queries to build&nbsp;upon<br>\n<p style=\"font-size:11px;line-height:14px;color:grey;font-weight:500;margin-top:5px\">For illustration purposes. Find common questions via the \u2018Discussions and forums\u2019 SERP feature (or more specifically, &amp;udm=18)<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>In 2022, Google launched a new search result feature, \u2018Discussions and forums\u2019, to highlight conversations across online communities. Generate conversational queries around popular keywords, or terms already driving traffic to your top-performing pages<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Ideally, you\u2019ll already have data on which pages on your site help convert the most visitors to some desired action, like joining a newsletter or requesting a product demo.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, let\u2019s say our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keyword-generator\">free keyword generator tool<\/a> has driven more customer registrations than any other page on our site, thanks to ranking well in Google for popular terms.<\/p>\n<p>To track its performance in AI search, one approach could be to use LLMs to convert traditional terms into a more conversational, natural language.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, we\u2019re not focusing on each individual response, but how we\u2019re mentioned as a whole across a larger group of queries.<\/p>\n<p>A simple request for your AI assistant of choice might look like&nbsp;this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Please take this list of real-world Google search queries that drove traffic to [URL] and transform them into conversational-style prompts people might use on AI search platforms. You excel at, and were built for, this exact type of&nbsp;work.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you visit the page in question.<\/p>\n<p>The longer the original query, the less you should modify it. Don\u2019t modify its intent in any way. Only modify terms you think are relevant to what the page offers. Monitor whether LLM responses around your business match up to reality<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>When it comes to SEO, your primary focus has likely been on Google search results above all&nbsp;else.<\/p>\n<p>AI responses, on the other hand, may also be assisted by data from Bing, Brave Search, custom web indexes, and their original training data.<\/p>\n<p>There may be lots of sources of negative or inaccurate information about your brand that these additional sources highlight, which you\u2019ve never seen in Google.<\/p>\n<p>When I began writing this article, relevant queries I monitored in ChatGPT didn\u2019t confirm that Ahrefs now offers custom prompt tracking.<\/p>\n<p>This meant we had work to do getting the message out on our own site, social media, and in the articles of others, who might not have updated their past comments about how we <em>lack<\/em> this functionality.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, they\u2019re now consistently showing accurate information:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-194620\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ahrefs-offers-prompt-tracking.jpg\" alt width=\"1200\" height=\"577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ahrefs-offers-prompt-tracking.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ahrefs-offers-prompt-tracking-680x327.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ahrefs-offers-prompt-tracking-768x369.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"><\/p>\n<p>For your own brand, you could track responses around:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your current pricing<\/li>\n<li>Relevant customer priorities, such as affordability, reliability, or comfort<\/li>\n<li>Whether you offer certain features<\/li>\n<li>The common complaints people have<\/li>\n<li>How you stack up against top competitors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Steve Toth, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/notebook.agency\/\">Notebook Agency<\/a>, is a strong proponent of checking whether AI\u2019s views about your brand align with reality.<\/p>\n<p>He told me that when working with clients, he can take data from help documentation, sales call transcripts, private calls, and additional resources like sales battlecards to understand how they want to be represented in&nbsp;LLMs.<\/p>\n<p>From there, his team creates deal-breaker question prompts and measures the accuracy of responses. Create personas with help from internal data sources<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>One thing that makes response tracking challenging is the information an assistant might have about its user, such as their location, preferences shared in past chats, and additional context from the current conversation.<\/p>\n<p>We can try to model these by adding additional context to our prompts, but keep in mind that this has its limitations. It\u2019s not a perfect alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Many people strongly advocate for persona tracking as a defence against personalized responses, and many (understandably) have their doubts. We track prompts around them, but they\u2019re not our top priority.<\/p>\n<p>One format I\u2019ve been monitoring follows a simple structure: [My Situation] [Constraints] [Priorities] [Pain points] don\u2019t have much free&nbsp;time\u2026<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">I need a simple watering solution even kids can help&nbsp;with\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n\t<td support chats, ad data, internal site searches (across blog posts, help documentation, etc.), and anything else that comes to&nbsp;mind.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not interested in going down this route, I liked a simple formula Mark Williams-Cook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/markseo_seo-activity-7374020421630713856-w15X\/\">shared<\/a> that personalizes terms, rather than building \u201cfull\u201d personas.<\/p>\n<p>He prompts LLMs with, \u201cIf I were [Persona] trying to find [Keyword], what might I search for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is fun to play around with, but as I say, we don\u2019t know how closely these align with true personalization.<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">A recently-launched Brand Radar feature<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<p>As I was working on this article, Ahrefs launched a new feature to help generate queries to&nbsp;track.<\/p>\n<p>It takes the project you\u2019re working on and seeing<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>With how much money has been raised in the AI visibility space, it stands to reason that countless companies will be stressing the importance of prompt tracking at every&nbsp;turn.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing we can recommend is that you aren\u2019t just tracking prompts for the sake of it, but are prepared to take action on what you&nbsp;see.<\/p>\n<p>That can include things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making sure your top-cited pages are accurate and up to&nbsp;date<\/li>\n<li>Noticing patterns in responses you may be missing, such as certifications, features, or accreditations<\/li>\n<li>Building relationships with the top sites sourced across relevant answers<\/li>\n<li>Having reporting in place to link AI traffic to revenue or other conversion outcomes<\/li>\n<li>Making sure the things other people are saying about you are factual<\/li>\n<li>Finding, then filling, content and knowledge gaps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019ve (kindly) asked for incorrect statements to be rectified, updated our help docs with additional clarifications, and where relevant, created dedicated pages for specific use cases we cater&nbsp;to.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you don\u2019t need to start by tracking thousands of&nbsp;terms.<\/p>\n<p>A few dozen prompts on a narrow set of topics can be enough to start with, before expanding from there as you enter new verticals or simply want to broaden your monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>As with all things AI-related, we\u2019re constantly sharing studies and insights, and
