If most of the internet starts publishing 10,000+ word guides, that\u2019s probably what will get cited. But they won\u2019t get cited <em>because<\/em> they\u2019re 10,000+ words. They\u2019ll get cited because that\u2019s what\u2019s available (and what <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content\/\">\u201cfresh\u201d content<\/a> starts to look&nbsp;like).<\/p>\n<p>But hey, don\u2019t take my word for&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p>In true Ahrefs fashion, we studied 174,000 pages cited in AI Overview responses to see what actually matters. <strong>Spoiler alert:<\/strong> there\u2019s almost no correlation between word length and being cited in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p>The best thing you can do is write as much as you need to convey your topic to your human audience concisely.<\/p>\n<p>Trim the fluff, get straight to the point, and stop chasing arbitrary word counts \u201cbecause it\u2019s good for SEO\u201d or \u201cbecause AI prefers it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" id=\"section1\"><a class=\"subhead-anchor\" data-tip=\"tooltip__copielink\" rel=\"#section1\"><svg width=\"19\" height=\"19\" viewBox=\"0 0 14 14\" style><g fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\"><path d=\"M0 0h14v14H0z\" \/><path d=\"M7.45 9.887l-1.62 1.621c-.92.92-2.418.92-3.338 0a2.364 2.364 0 0 1 0-3.339l1.62-1.62-1.273-1.272-1.62 1.62a4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.885 5.884l1.62-1.62L7.45 9.886zM5.527 5.135L7.17 3.492c.92-.92 2.418-.92 3.339 0 .92.92.92 2.418 0 3.339L8.866 8.473l1.272 1.273 1.644-1.643A4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.897 2.22L4.254 3.863l1.272 1.272zm-.66 3.998a.749.749 0 0 1 0-1.06l2.208-2.206a.749.749 0 1 1 1.06 1.06L5.928 9.133a.75.75 0 0 1-1.061 0z\" style \/><\/g><\/svg><\/a><div class=\"link-text\"> Key findings&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The average length of content cited in AI Overviews is <strong>1282 words<\/strong>. This is slightly above the current average of content ranking in Google\u2019s organic results, which is 1188&nbsp;words.<\/li>\n<li>There is a <strong>near-zero correlation<\/strong> between word length and being cited in AI Overview responses (0.04 Spearman correlation).<\/li>\n<li><strong>53.4%<\/strong> of pages cited by AI Overviews are under 1,000&nbsp;words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>30.6%<\/strong> are between 1,000 and 2,000&nbsp;words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only 16%<\/strong> are over 2,000&nbsp;words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line: content length isn\u2019t a major factor in whether you get cited. Short pages (under 1,000 words), long-form guides (over 2,000 words), and everything in between can all&nbsp;work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Our methodology<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">&nbsp;We analyzed 560,346 AI Overviews and identified 1,677,876 cited URLs. After filtering for pages where we could successfully extract content, we ended up with 174,048 pages with valid&nbsp;data.\n<p>For each page, we stripped out HTML and boilerplate content, then measured the word count of the remaining raw text. Short content is cited <em>slightly<\/em> more than content over 1,000&nbsp;words&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/h2>\n<p>The average word count of pages cited in AI Overviews is 1,282 words. But averages can be misleading. Content length does not seem to affect AI citation position&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/h2>\n<p>If longer content doesn\u2019t get cited more often, maybe it at least ranks higher within AI Overviews? Short content is often cited in top positions&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/h2>\n<p>When short content gets cited, its distribution across positions closely mirrors that of longer content.<\/p>\n<p>For pages under 350&nbsp;words:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>34% appear in position 1<\/li>\n<li>32% appear in position 2<\/li>\n<li>31% appear in position 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pages between 350 and 1,000 words show a similar pattern:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>30% in position 1<\/li>\n<li>32% in position 2<\/li>\n<li>34% in position 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over 95% of short content citations land in the top three positions. (Audio pages are typically podcast transcriptions, which can run long. For instance, a 30+ minute conversation can be over 5,000&nbsp;words.)<\/p>\n<p>The median values of transactional and utility content (such as core pages, listings, and listing collection pages) typically range from 300 to 550 words and are still frequently cited. This matters for ecommerce and other non-blog content. You don\u2019t need a 1,000+ word SEO-optimized buying guide to show up in AI Overviews. Match the format to the intent.<\/p>\n<p>One more note: the overall median of 1,115 words is pulled up by the heavy representation of Articles and Audio files in our dataset. So what should you focus on instead?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Answer the query directly.<\/strong> Give people (and search systems) what they want early. Don\u2019t bury the&nbsp;lede.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prioritize structure and clarity.<\/strong> Use headings, lead with your main point, and write in declarative sentences that are easy to&nbsp;parse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write for humans first.<\/strong> No one is actually reading a 10,000+ word guide start to finish. If your content doesn\u2019t get engagement, it won\u2019t send the signals that influence search visibility in the first&nbsp;place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Match length to the content type.<\/strong> A product page doesn\u2019t need 2,000 words. A comprehensive guide might. Let the topic and format dictate the length, not an arbitrary word count target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both short-form and long-form content have their place. The goal is to write as much as you need to answer the question or cover the topic thoroughly.
