But really their fuel sucks. The wrong fuel for the wrong engine won\u2019t work. Startups need the right fuel and the right engine, and they have to&nbsp;match.\u201d<\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She also urges startups to look for what she calls marketing advantages: the unfair edges that only your company has. At Carta, that meant using their proprietary data to publish a landmark report on the gender equity gap. The campaign was provocative, press-worthy, and put Carta on the&nbsp;map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\u201cCopying another company\u2019s playbook won\u2019t get you there. I\u2019m always asking: what advantages do you have that nobody else does? Fine content destroyed us at CXL. It wasn\u2019t bad, but it wasn\u2019t great either. And that\u2019s the worst place to be. Bad content people ignore. Do the opposite of what you\u2019re \u2018supposed\u2019 to do, then make the narrative tie back to your&nbsp;brand.\u201d<\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of his best stunts (and misses):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The \u201cvandalism\u201d reveal (Singapore)<\/strong> \u2014 Delbert seeded a fake telco campaign in MRT stations, then doodled over the ads with creators before revealing Circles.Life and its 20GB for $20 offer. In pristine Singapore, it hit a cultural nerve. Result: 10\u00d7 new-user run rate overnight, CAC down by \u2153\u2013\u2154, and brand awareness jumping from single digits to 30\u201340%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$3 Baller \u201cvending machine\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 Pay $3 and get $50 from a human inside a faux vending machine. It got tons of viral attention and press covered it extensively. The police showed up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CMB\u2019s \u201csend casuals away\u201d feature<\/strong> \u2014 CMB wanted to prove that it was an app for serious relationships. So, if a user selected \u201ccasual\u201d during sign-up, the app pointed you to competitors instead. A contrarian gesture that most companies wouldn\u2019t make.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How Delbert decides what to&nbsp;ship:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aim for expected value, not heroics<\/strong>: Budget small, take many shots, and don\u2019t count on a stunt to hit the forecast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Account for hidden costs<\/strong>: Stunts are \u201ccheap\u201d in cash but expensive in team energy and courage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exploit the cultural erogenous zone<\/strong>: What shocks in Singapore won\u2019t budge Manila.
