href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ai-overviews\/\">Google\u2019s AI Overviews<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ai-mode\/\">AI Mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure for&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/new-research-20-of-americans-use-ai-tools-10x-month-but-growth-is-slowing-and-traditional-search-hasnt-dipped\/\">SparkToro found<\/a> that over 20% of Americans are now heavy users of AI tools (employing them 10X or more each month), and nearly 40% use AI tools at least once a&nbsp;month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" from search engine visibility?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Search engine visibility is about ranking higher in search engines like Google. Although that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re not getting conversions or&nbsp;sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People might still remember your brand (if mentioned). Or they might belong to the tiny group of people who <em>actually <\/em>click on the citations and navigate to your website. Or they might see your brand in a generated response and do a search for you on Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last scenario, even though the \u2018click\u2019 originated from LLMs, your analytics tool might attribute it to search engines, giving you the false impression that LLMs do nothing for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although LLM visibility is the new kid on the block, it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s more important or that search engine visibility is&nbsp;dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, people are <strong>still using <\/strong>traditional search engines. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/new-research-20-of-americans-use-ai-tools-10x-month-but-growth-is-slowing-and-traditional-search-hasnt-dipped\/\">SparkToro<\/a>, 95% of Americans continue to use them each month, and 86% are heavy&nbsp;users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, because of how LLMs work (see next section), you\u2019ll likely still need to rank high in search engines in order to be&nbsp;cited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, we found a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/does-ranking-higher-on-google-mean-youll-get-cited-in-ai-overviews\/\">positive moderate correlation<\/a> between ranking high on the SERPs versus being cited in AI Overviews (AIOs). Search engine visibility is still as important as&nbsp;ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I don\u2019t want to say that SE visibility is 100% LLM visibility. There are still some gaps. Traditionally, these pages would <em>never <\/em>get any visibility, but now they&nbsp;might.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To sum up: Both search engine and LLM visibility are important. For example, GPT-5\u2019s cut-off was September 2024 and Gemini 2.5 Pro was January 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They rely on search indices<\/strong> \u2014 LLMs use <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Retrieval-augmented_generation\">retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)<\/a> to retrieve information from search indices like Google and Bing, then incorporate that information into their generated answers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, all <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/llm-optimization\/\">LLM optimization<\/a> tactics revolve around these two methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increasing your visibility in training data<\/strong> \u2014 If your brand is commonly mentioned in the data sources these LLMs use, then it\u2019s likely your brand will appear where relevant. However, this may not be the most feasible in reality, as we have no way to know or control which data sources LLMs use to train their models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increasing your visibility in search indices<\/strong> \u2014 Aka <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\">SEO<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How do we do this? Here are some tactics that\u2019ll help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-191425-_k6gjx2q3im10\"><\/a>1. Build off-site mentions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is probably the single most important thing you can do to improve your visibility in LLM outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because one way LLMs understand your brand and when it should recommend you, is by understanding how many other places in its dataset mention you and you in the correct context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, in our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overview-brand-correlation\/\">study of 75,000 brands<\/a> to see which factors are most likely to influence brand mentions in AI Overviews, we found that brand web mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI Overview brand visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1769\" tend to include, but there are strong commonalities amongst all of&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For examples, they all seem to prioritize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>User-generated content sites<\/strong> like Reddit and&nbsp;Quora<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Third-party review sites<\/strong> like G2 This likely reflects how RAG works as LLMs are more likely to retrieve information about topics not included in their original training data. Focus on updating pages that cover fresh, modern, or novel topics rather than updating everything constantly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-chunk-optimization\/\"><strong>\u201cBottom Line Up Front\u201d (BLUF)<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 Lead with your most important ideas as quickly as possible. This helps both readers and LLMs understand your content\u2019s value immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Write declarative sentences<\/strong> \u2014 LLMs prefer confident, definitive statements when gathering evidence. Instead of wishy-washy language, write in opinionated sentences that sound authoritative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep sentence structure simple<\/strong> \u2014 Don\u2019t start a paragraph about a topic but wait until the end to actually name what you\u2019re discussing. Simple, clear sentence structures are easier for both readers and LLMs to understand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increase entity richness<\/strong> \u2014 LLMs seem to prefer content that\u2019s \u201centity rich\u201d, i.e. text that includes many related products, topics, and concepts packed together. Mention different related entities clearly and frequently throughout your writing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Provide global document context<\/strong> \u2014 For longer documents, periodically remind readers (and AI) what the document is about. Include contextual reminders about the article\u2019s main topic, especially in lengthy PDFs or comprehensive guides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-191425-_6tbk7sb8ybkv\"><\/a>3. Monitor hallucinated URLs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-often-do-ai-assistants-hallucinate-links\/\">our study of 16 million URLs<\/a> cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and Mistral, we found that AI assistants send visitors to 404 pages <strong>2.87x more often<\/strong> than Google Search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, LLMs hallucinate a lot. Even URLs. So, even if they\u2019re sending traffic to your site, they could be sending visitors to a page that doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a common hallucinated URL for our site was <a href=\"http:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords\">ahrefs.com\/keywords<\/a>. We write about keywords a lot, so LLMs expect that we have a page like that. But we don\u2019t. Optimize for novel training data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LLMs are also trained on data that didn\u2019t impact SEO or that SEOs didn\u2019t care about. You\u2019d want to look for outputs that reference your competitors, but not you, and decide if this is a context you want to be associated with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re fashion brand Aim\u00e9 Leon Dore. Enter your brand into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/brand-radar\">Brand Radar<\/a> and your competitors in the \u201cYour Competitors\u201d section.
