It searches the internet in real time to deliver fast, clear answers to any question\u2014with sources and citations included\u2026Every answer comes with clickable citations, making it easy to verify the information and dig deeper if you want.<br><\/em><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/hub\/blog\/getting-started-with-perplexity\">Perplexity Team<\/a>, Oct&nbsp;2024<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>ChatGPT and Gemini, on the other hand, don\u2019t always link&nbsp;out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their citation process is very much query-dependent, and their internal systems trigger searches based on different criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ChatGPT, for example, seems to use something called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mihir23192_the-seo-community-will-soon-start-discussing-activity-7353609394435117057-4sqT\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAACFVHncB5jqhKHk56xrmoTazEwPvJ01c_Ig\">sonic classifier<\/a>\u2014if the prompt \u201cprobability\u201d exceeds a certain threshold (i.e. if the response is less easy to \u201cpredict\u201d based on training data), then ChatGPT will perform a web search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perplexity consistently favors content that ranks well in Google, with 28.6% of its cited URLs landing in the top&nbsp;10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the other AI assistants, that number hovers around 8%\u2014and more than 80% of their citations come from pages that don\u2019t rank at all for the target query.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Perplexity focuses heavily on citations, it seems logical that its results would align closely with Google\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, unlike Gemini and other AI assistants, Perplexity doesn\u2019t draw on Google <em>or<\/em> Bing\u2019s index. In fact, it has its own search index, based on its crawler: <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.perplexity.ai\/guides\/bots\">perplexitybot<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI assistants\u2014even those that draw on Google and Bing\u2014appear to query search indexes in a fundamentally different way. This explains why we\u2019re seeing minimal crossover.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" id=\"section1\"><a class=\"subhead-anchor\" data-tip=\"tooltip__copielink\" rises to the top of the list, which is to be expected since it is a Microsoft-owned product that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-copilot-formerly-bing-chat-heres-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">draws on Bing search results<\/a> when generating its responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perplexity still remains one of the most SEO-aligned AI assistants, while ChatGPT and Gemini show the least overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" Overviews?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In those studies, we found a moderate positive correlation between Google rankings and citations in AI Overviews, with 76% of cited URLs coming from pages in data, it seems as if AI Overviews function like an extension of traditional search\u2014surfacing results that mostly reflect the&nbsp;SERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, AI Overviews follow the SERPs\u2014AI assistants don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the assistants built <em>by<\/em> Google aren\u2019t closely aligned with Google\u2019s SERPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are clearly other factors id=\"post-190494-_optwgqenz9il\"><\/a>Why AI citations might differ from Google or Bing results<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our data shows that the URLs cited by AI assistants rarely match what Google and Bing&nbsp;ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, they don\u2019t appear in the top 10 for the target prompt\u2014often, they aren\u2019t in the top 100 at&nbsp;all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because AI assistants don\u2019t rank results in the same way search engines do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of processing just one user query when deciding what to cite, they tend to retrieve pages based on multiple variations of that query\u2014a technique known as \u201c<strong>query fan-out<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These variations then get merged using methods like <a href=\"https:\/\/metehan.ai\/blog\/chatgpt-is-using-reciprocal-rank-fusion-rrf\/?s=09\">Reciprocal Rank Fusion<\/a> (<strong>RRF<\/strong>), where the pages that appear consistently are favored more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a page that ranks around #6 for \u201chow to descale a coffee machine,\u201d \u201ccleaning a Nespresso machine,\u201d and \u201cremove limescale from coffee maker\u201d might be cited over one that ranks #1 for only one of&nbsp;those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s possible that AI assistants may never search for the <strong>actual<\/strong> prompt that the user inputs\u2014instead it just acts as a catalyst for other fan-out queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why eventual citations won\u2019t always rank for the original prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personalization can also play a role: the exact same search query run through AI can lead to wholly different citations, due to factors like the user\u2019s prompt or conversation history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this may explain why AI citations don\u2019t always mirror the&nbsp;SERPs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div
