Spoiler: it did not&nbsp;rank.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Google believes AI Mode content is good enough to show to users in what will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/google-io\/670439\/google-ai-mode-search-io-2025\">likely be the default search mode in the future<\/a>. But the content itself doesn\u2019t seem good enough to compete in the normal Google search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it because it\u2019s AI-generated? Is it because there\u2019s nothing new added? Is it because it\u2019s just not good enough? I don\u2019t&nbsp;know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am fascinated that this AI Mode content is not the least bit competitive with content that Google normally ranks. I was actually expecting it to rank since the AI Mode content provides a decent overview of each topic. I didn\u2019t expect it to rank at the top, but I figured 10th-30th place would be likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the tests, a page of ours about a different topic that didn\u2019t even mention the target keyword actually ranked much higher than the generated page which was more relevant and useful. These pages weren\u2019t just published on a new website, they were published directly on the Ahrefs blog, with DR 91 and a history of content around SEO that ranks well. They were given the best conditions possible to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the pages we already had existing blog and glossary pages for, but one was a completely new topic where we had no competing pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was targeting \u201chreflang\u201d, \u201ctechnical SEO\u201d, and \u201ccrawled - currently not indexed\u201d with the different topics. I had high hopes for this one, but it never ranked well for anything meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1009\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-4.png\" alt=\"Keywords the crawled currently not index page ranked for\" class=\"wp-image-189911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-4.png 2048w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-4-680x335.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-4-768x378.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-4-1536x757.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We actually have another page about a different Google Search Console index status, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/discovered-currently-not-indexed\/\">Discovered - currently not indexed<\/a>, that ranks in 41st for this topic. The generated test page is much more relevant and has more useful information, but it still doesn\u2019t rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1038\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-5.png\" alt=\"Another page on Ahrefs that didn't mention the term ranked 41st\" class=\"wp-image-189912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-5.png 1038w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-5-680x413.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/word-image-189907-5-768x466.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1038px) 100vw, 1038px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-189907-_gtxvj3qfc7b5\"><\/a>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I do think the generated pages are fairly useful and should probably rank better than some of the other ranking pages, but the fact that they don\u2019t suggests that Google may have some systems in place to prevent this kind of generated content from ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-do-ai-content-detectors-work\/\">AI content detection<\/a>, something like information gain, or something else, I\u2019m not sure. It could be multiple systems at work. I\u2019m running another test to see what happens if I add some human content to the mix.
