hallucinations.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Google uses <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/vertex-ai\/generative-ai\/docs\/grounding\/overview\">\u201cgrounding\u201d<\/a> to improve their accuracy, but according to our research, AI Overviews are more likely to cite AI-generated content than human-written content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p><p>Here\u2019s what we&nbsp;found:<\/p><div class=\"intro-tok\" -->\n\n\n\n<p>We took one million SERPs showing AI Overviews from Ahrefs <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> and extracted the top three cited links. 1.9 million URLs in total, of which we had 500,000 in our database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ran each URL through our own AI content detector, which is part of <strong>Page Inspect <\/strong>in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1884\" height=\"1312\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/running-my-blog-post-through-ai-content-detector-1.jpg\" alt=\"Running my blog post through AI Content Detector\" class=\"wp-image-189800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/running-my-blog-post-through-ai-content-detector-1.jpg 1884w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/running-my-blog-post-through-ai-content-detector-1-610x425.jpg 610w, 1884px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what our content detector found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>3.6%<\/strong> of pages cited in AI Overviews were categorized as \u201cpure&nbsp;AI.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>8.6%<\/strong> were categorized as \u201cpure&nbsp;human.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>87.8%<\/strong> were categorized as a mix of&nbsp;two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the ones that were a mix of both human and&nbsp;AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>11.2%<\/strong> showed minimal AI use (1-10% of the page content was categorized as&nbsp;AI)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>44%<\/strong> showed moderate AI use (11-40%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>24.7%<\/strong> showed substantial AI use (41%-70%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>7.9%<\/strong> showed dominant AI use (71%-99%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1677\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-ai-overviews-are-created-assiste.png\" alt=\"How many pages in AI Overviews are created\/assisted https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-ai-overviews-are-created-assiste-1465x1536.png 1465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings become even more striking when compared to our previous research on AI content across the web. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-percentage-of-new-content-is-ai-generated\/\">analysis of 900,000 new pages<\/a>, we found&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2.5%<\/strong> of pages were categorized as \u201cpure&nbsp;AI.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25.8%<\/strong> were categorized as \u201cpure&nbsp;human.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>71.7%<\/strong> were categorized as a mix of the&nbsp;two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though this research looked only at new pages (and not all cited URLs in AI Overviews will be new), this suggests that Google\u2019s AI Overviews might show a bias toward citing AI-generated or AI-assisted content compared to the general distribution of content on the&nbsp;web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> <!-- notionvc: eacaefc4-53ef-41d4-8a9e-379503edf3dd -->No AI content detector is perfect. Google\u2019s own AI-generated content is citing other AI-generated content and thus creating a feedback loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think Google is necessarily being careless either. Part of what we\u2019re observing may simply reflect the current state of the web. For example, in our study of 900K pages, we found that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-percentage-of-new-content-is-ai-generated\/\">74% of new webpages include AI-generated content<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1993\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-are-created-assisted-with-ai.jpg\" alt=\"How many pages are created\/assisted with AI\" class=\"wp-image-189802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-are-created-assisted-with-ai.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-are-created-assisted-with-ai-341x425.jpg 341w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-are-created-assisted-with-ai-768x957.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-are-created-assisted-with-ai-1233x1536.jpg 1233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google depends on creators for content. But creators are increasingly using AI to create or assist with content creation. For example, in our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketers-using-ai-publish-more-content\/\">State of AI in Content Marketing report,<\/a> where we surveyed 879 marketers, 87% of respondents use AI to help create content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1536\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bar-chart-showing-how-many-marketers-use-ai-to-cre-1.png\" alt=\"Bar chart showing how many marketers use AI to create content\" class=\"wp-image-189803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bar-chart-showing-how-many-marketers-use-ai-to-cre-1.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bar-chart-showing-how-many-marketers-use-ai-to-cre-1-443x425.png 443w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bar-chart-showing-how-many-marketers-use-ai-to-cre-1-768x737.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bar-chart-showing-how-many-marketers-use-ai-to-cre-1-1536x1475.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even though Google\u2019s trying to improve accuracy through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), we\u2019ve also found that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-generated-content-does-not-hurt-your-google-rankings\/\">86.5% of top-ranking pages contain some amount of AI-generated content<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1604\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-the-top-20-search-results-are-cr.jpg\" alt=\"How many pages in the top 20 search results are created\/assisted with AI\" class=\"wp-image-189804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-the-top-20-search-results-are-cr.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-the-top-20-search-results-are-cr-424x425.jpg 424w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-the-top-20-search-results-are-cr-768x770.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-the-top-20-search-results-are-cr-1532x1536.jpg 1532w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/how-many-pages-in-the-top-20-search-results-are-cr-120x120.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means AI Overviews are drawing from a content ecosystem that\u2019s increasingly AI-generated.
