And you\u2019ve probably seen occasions where the Declaration of Independence, or a famous speech, or passages from The Bible were confidently (and very incorrectly) labelled as AI-generated.<\/p>\n<p>But in the academic literature, AI detectors routinely hit <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-do-ai-content-detectors-work\/\">80% (or greater) successful detection rates<\/a>. OpenAI reports detecting text generated by its models with <a href=\"https:\/\/bgr.com\/tech\/openai-has-a-tool-that-can-tell-if-you-use-chatgpt-to-cheat-but-it-wont-release-it\/\">99.9% accuracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of our AI detector nailing content detection, correctly identifying the sections of Patrick\u2019s article generated with GPT-4o:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1834\" height=\"1370\" class=\"wp-image-188441\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-2.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-2.jpg 1834w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-2-569x425.jpg 569w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-2-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-2-1536x1147.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1834px) 100vw, 1834px\"><\/p>\n<p>And another example from one of my hobby websites, where the model correctly recognises that I used one of Meta\u2019s Llama models to write the article:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1814\" height=\"1346\" class=\"wp-image-188442\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-3.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-3.jpg 1814w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-3-573x425.jpg 573w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-3-768x570.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-3-1536x1140.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1814px) 100vw, 1814px\"><\/p>\n<p>These are not random guesses. This is accurate detection. So what explains the apparent gap between the theory and the practice? How can AI detectors be so wrong, and so right, at the same&nbsp;time?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cFamous\u201d text is usually in AI data sets. <\/strong>Many of the most egregious examples of AI detectors getting it wrong are actually expected behaviour. Famous texts are usually found in LLM training data, shaping the writing patterns that AI detectors look for, and causing a false positive. As Mark Williams-Cook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:ugcPost:7330261879266684929?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28ugcPost%3A7330261879266684929%2C7330307394087841792%29&amp;replyUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28ugcPost%3A7330261879266684929%2C7330533569884213248%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287330307394087841792%2Curn%3Ali%3AugcPost%3A7330261879266684929%29&amp;dashReplyUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287330533569884213248%2Curn%3Ali%3AugcPost%3A7330261879266684929%29\">explained on LinkedIn<\/a>, flagging a famous political speech as AI-generated<em> \u201c\u2026is the correct answer when you build a tool to identify the output of a corpus of training data, but then you choose to feed it part of the training data.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Many free AI detectors are overhyped. <\/strong>Many free AI detectors are just basic API calls that are little better than random number generators. Effective detection requires fine-tuned detection models and regular updates to keep up with new model releases. This is difficult and expensive to achieve, and most free tools don\u2019t attempt it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI detectors are easy to misuse. <\/strong>Most detection models perform best when they\u2019re used on the same type of content they were trained on. AI text is <em>much <\/em>harder to detect when it\u2019s \u201chumanized\u201d, or when documents content a blend of human-written and AI-generated text. These are well-known limitations, but they aren\u2019t often communicated to&nbsp;users.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There are not always clear answers.<\/strong> As writing workflows incorporate AI in more subtle, nuanced ways, it becomes harder to answer the question \u201cis this AI-generated?\u201d Is something AI-generated if it was written by a human but copyedited by AI? Or outlined by AI but written by a human? These are increasingly blurry lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like LLMs, AI detectors are statistical models. They deal in probabilities, not certainty. They can be incredibly accurate, but <strong>they always carry the risk of false positives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you understand these limitations, false positives don\u2019t need to be problematic. Don\u2019t weigh any single result too heavily. Run many tests and see how the results trend. Combine the results with other forms of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>But many AI detectors are marketed as infallible truth-telling machines. That creates false expectations and encourages them to be used in bad ways that don\u2019t reflect how they actually work. These are real problems caused by the misuse of AI detectors.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth stating concretely: no AI detector should be used to make life-or-death decisions about someone\u2019s career or academic standing. This is a bad use of the technology and misunderstands how these tools function.<\/p>\n<p>But I don\u2019t think the solution to these problems is to abandon AI content detection wholesale.<\/p>\n<p>There is a real and pressing demand for these tools. As I write, \u201cai detector\u201d is searched 2.5 million times per month, and demand has been growing rapidly. As long as we can generate text with AI, there will be utility in identifying it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"823\" height=\"386\" class=\"wp-image-188443\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-4.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-4.png 823w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-4-680x319.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-4-768x360.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 823px) 100vw, 823px\"><\/p>\n<p>Education is a better answer. People building and promoting AI content detectors need to help users understand the constraints of their tools. We need to encourage smarter use, following <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-do-ai-content-detectors-work\/\">some basic guidelines<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Try to learn as much about the detector\u2019s training data as possible<\/strong>, and use models trained on material similar to what you want to&nbsp;test.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test multiple documents from the same author.<\/strong> A student\u2019s essay was flagged as AI-generated? Run all their past work through the same tool to get a better sense of their base&nbsp;rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Never use AI content detectors to make decisions that will impact someone\u2019s career or academic standing.<\/strong> Always use their results in conjunction with other forms of evidence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use with a good dose of skepticism.<\/strong> No AI detector is 100% accurate. There will always be false positives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many bad, silly ways to use AI detectors, but there are also many good use cases. AI text is being woven inextricably through the fabric of the internet. It\u2019s already a fact of life, so why bother even <em>trying <\/em>to detect it?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s real truth to this. Our AI detector estimates that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-percentage-of-new-content-is-ai-generated\/\">74% of new pages published in April 2025<\/a> contained some amount of AI-generated text. This number will only grow over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1993\" class=\"wp-image-188444\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-5.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-5.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-5-341x425.jpg 341w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-5-768x957.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/word-image-188439-5-1233x1536.jpg 1233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve used the analogy of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low-background_steel\">post-nuclear steel<\/a> before. Since the detonation of the first nuclear bombs, every piece of steel manufactured has been \u201ctainted\u201d by nuclear fallout. It\u2019s not hard to imagine a world where every piece of content is similarly \u201ctainted\u201d by AI output.<\/p>\n<p>But this, to me, is the biggest justification for using an AI detector. The entire internet is being swamped with LLM outputs, so we need to understand as much as possible about the tools and techniques that shape the content we interact with every&nbsp;day.<\/p>\n<p>I want to&nbsp;know\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Which AI models are the best for creating high-quality content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How often my competitors publish AI content<\/strong>, and which models they&nbsp;use.<\/li>\n<li>How easy it is for<strong> other companies (like Google) to detect our AI content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How much AI content is present in a particular SERP<\/strong>, and how much effort I need to invest to&nbsp;rank.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How organic performance metrics correlate with different levels of AI use<\/strong>, like search traffic, keyword rankings, and backlinks (as I type, we\u2019re running a study on&nbsp;this).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The goal of AI content detection isn\u2019t making black-and-white moral judgements about AI use: <em>this is AI content, so it\u2019s bad; this is human content, so it\u2019s good. <\/em>AI can be used to make excellent content (if you\u2019ve read the Ahrefs blog recently, you\u2019ve been reading content that contains AI-generated text).<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to understand what works well, and what doesn\u2019t; to collect data that offers some advantage and helps improve the growth of your website and your business.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-188439-_2fzmr4dkjk8w\"><\/a>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>Most of the new content on the web is created with the aid of generative AI.
