You can read the full proposal on <a href=\"https:\/\/llmstxt.org\/\">llmstext.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, it\u2019s a text file designed to tell LLMs where to find the <em>good stuff<\/em>: API documentation, return policies, product taxonomies, and other context-rich resources. We already use files like <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/robots-txt\/\">robots.txt<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-create-a-sitemap\/\">sitemap.xml<\/a> to help search engines understand what\u2019s on a site and where to look. Why not apply the same logic to&nbsp;LLMs?<\/p>\n<p>But importantly, <strong>no major LLM provider currently supports llms.txt.<\/strong> Not OpenAI. Not Anthropic. Not Google.<\/p>\n<p>Google included llms.txt in their <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/a2aproject\/A2A\/blob\/6351e4c45abaf2f0a6817d66540660af277e7772\/llms.txt\">Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol<\/a>, launched in April 2025\u2014but that\u2019s effectively adding a proposed protocol into another proposed protocol. Notably, Google hasn\u2019t committed to crawling it&nbsp;yet.<\/p>\n<p>As I said in the intro, llms.txt is a <em>proposed<\/em> standard. It uses H2 headers to organize links to key resources. And no provider has committed to parsing it.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also very easy to set up. If you already have structured content like product pages or developer docs, compiling an llms.txt is trivial. It\u2019s a Markdown file, hosted on your own website. There might be no observed benefit, but there\u2019s also no risk. If LLMs do eventually follow it as a standard, there might be some small advantage to being early adopters.<\/p>\n<p>I think llms.txt is gaining traction because we all want to influence <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/llm-optimization\/\">LLM visibility<\/a>, but we lack the tools to do it. So we latch onto ideas that<em> feel<\/em> like control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">How to track AI visibility<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<p><span class=\"diff-insert\">If you&nbsp;<em>do<\/em>&nbsp;want to track your visibility with AI systems, Ahrefs gives you two ways to get actual data instead of hoping a text file makes a difference:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"diff-insert\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/app.ahrefs.com\/bot-analytics\/\">Bot Analytics<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(beta, free): See which AI bots are actually visiting your site. It tracks visits across 12 bot categories\u2014including AI assistants, AI search bots, and AI crawlers\u2014using server-side data collection through Cloudflare (no JavaScript needed). Want to know if GPTBot or ClaudeBot are even looking at your llms.txt? Now you can check.<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"change-annotation annotation-ahrefs\">Bot Analytics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"diff-insert\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/brand-radar\">Brand Radar<\/a><\/strong>: Monitor how AI assistants actually&nbsp;<em>talk<\/em>&nbsp;about your brand. Search engines already crawl and understand your content using existing standards like robots.txt and sitemap.xml. <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/geo-is-just-seo\/\">LLMs use much of the same infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Google\u2019s John Mueller put it in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-says-llms-txt-comparable-to-keywords-meta-tag\/544804\/\">Reddit post recently<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n<p>AFAIK none of the AI services have said they\u2019re using LLMs.TXT (and you can tell when you look at your server logs that they don\u2019t even check for it). To me, it\u2019s comparable to the keywords meta tag \u2013 this is what a site-owner claims their site is about \u2026 (Is the site really like that? well, you can check it.
