Don\u2019t go straight in with the pitch; just get on their radar and ask why they didn\u2019t feature you to start a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-184066-_3ct9gj7zm3uj\"><\/a>Reproduce<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reproducing is all about identifying the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building-strategies\/\">link building strategies<\/a> that are working for your competitors, then using them yourself to get more links like the ones they have. Let\u2019s look at a few ways to do&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-184066-_gu6qzjygfvoy\"><\/a>Look for journalist request links, then reproduce that tactic if they&nbsp;exist<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalists often use services like SourceBottle to source expert quotes for their posts. Because this usually results in a link back to the site alongside the quote, it\u2019s become a popular link building tactic in recent years. If there are many results, you can bet your bottom dollar that the competitor is actively using this tactic to build backlinks. This is a sign it\u2019s working well in your industry and would likely work well for you as&nbsp;well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"further-reading\"><div class=\"reading-title\">Further reading<\/div><div class=\"reading-content\">\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/haro-alternatives\/\">HARO: Is It Alternatives You\u2019re Looking For?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-184066-_kpjrvlu9hxt9\"><\/a>Look for digital PR links, then run similar campaigns of your&nbsp;own<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital PR can mean many things, but it\u2019s often just a fancy way of describing when you create and market a piece of content designed to attract attention and&nbsp;links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a vape superstore in the UK put together a list of illegal vape hotspots then reached out to local newspapers who then covered it in droves. This means that reviews can make or break online sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I recently wanted to buy a shirt from a brand I\u2019d never heard of before. Depending on what you do, there are likely other well-known websites in your industry where plenty of potential customers start their search\u2014and you need to be listed in these places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I always use this website to find cat sitters\u2014not Google:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1474\" height=\"708\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/the-website-i-use-to-search-for-catsitters-i-don.png\" alt=\"The website I use to search for catsitters. can&nbsp;trust!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to use Ahrefs to find important places to get listed in your industry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to the Competitive Analytics tool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch the toggle to \u201creferring domains\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter your domain in the \u201cNot linking to this target\u201d section, then a few of your competitors below<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch the mode to \u201cExact URL\u201d for all domains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hit \u201cshow link opportunities\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for sites that are likely directories or industry search engines with lots of traffic<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1598\" height=\"1064\" haystack, an alternative method is to plug a handful of terms like \u201clawyer in NY\u201d, \u201clawyer nyc\u201d, and \u201cpersonal lawyer new york\u201d into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/de\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>, then go to the Traffic Share by Domains report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img pays to get listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another benefit of getting listed in these places is that they often show up in Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you search for \u201clawyer NYC,\u201d the as much as you can, always<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Big brands often have hundreds of thousands of people they can promote content to via owned channels like their newsletters and social media. If this isn\u2019t you, you\u2019ll need to do some extra work to promote your content. After all, more eyeballs = more backlinks = higher rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of ways to do this. It doesn\u2019t have to be a scary&nbsp;thing\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you mention or quote people in your content, reach out and let them know. But there are still plenty of interesting things you can do if you\u2019re willing to use your imagination and get creative\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a bakery near me recently launched a doughnut for just 10 pence to honour a popular British candy bar. They probably just had to sell a couple of hundred donuts at a small loss for a day or&nbsp;two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the businesses who consistently push the boat like this in the real world that will have the best off-page SEO, as it\u2019s hard to replicate these backlinks and other positive off-page signals through \u201cconventional\u201d SEO campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-184066-_sewrb3eichss\"><\/a>Is there anything else I should do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not really. If you\u2019re a big brand then you can also do things like creating or optimizing your Wikipedia, but I wouldn\u2019t worry about these things unless you truly are a big brand. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-create-a-wikipedia-page\/\">we had trouble getting Wikipedia to keep our page live<\/a>, so it\u2019s virtually impossible for small brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for things like \u201cbe active on social media\u201d that you often see on similar checklists, well, this probably isn\u2019t going to have a huge impact on SEO. It\u2019s also something that you should be doing anyway as part of your marketing efforts, so I wouldn\u2019t file it as an off-page SEO tactic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Got questions?
