I want to find information in the fastest, most effortless way possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>As a marketer, I want to know where the tide is headed.<\/strong> Will AI search engines replace \u201ctraditional\u201d search engines? Are AI chatbots really good enough to dethrone Google? I brainstormed tons of <em>Skyrim<\/em> searches grouped by different categories, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Short-tail queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>skyrim<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long-tail queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>how to solve the mzulft oculory puzzle<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transactional queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>best paid skyrim mods<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Informational queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>how to level up smithing quickly in skyrim<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Navigational queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>uesp skyrim map<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Local queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>buy skyrim near me<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Image queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>skyrim landscapes<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trending queries<\/strong> (e.g. <em>skyrim nolvus<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">How to find tons of keywords on any&nbsp;topic<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<p>The Intents filter in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> was a big help for brainstorming keywords. I focused particularly on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Relevance: <\/strong>were the results appropriate for my&nbsp;query?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accuracy:<\/strong> did the search engines return valid, up-to-date information?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Usefulness:<\/strong> did I meet the intent of my search? Did I leave&nbsp;happy?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speed:<\/strong> how quickly did I get my answer?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ease-of-use:<\/strong> how much effort did it require?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a completely unscientific but <em>very <\/em>interesting analysis of the best AI search engines. Many of its responses are terse bulleted lists, and it excelled in summarising technical queries (like <em>DA09Dawnbreaker<\/em>) or news-related topics (like <em>elder scrolls vi news<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1410\" height=\"1550\" class=\"wp-image-183624\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-2.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-2.jpg 1410w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-2-387x425.jpg 387w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-2-768x844.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-2-1397x1536.jpg 1397w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1410px) 100vw, 1410px\"><\/p>\n<p>I also noticed lots of errors and hallucinations in its output. One example: for <em>Should I become a vampire or a werewolf in skyrim?, <\/em>Perplexity suggested that werewolves were immune to silver weapons\u2014they actually take bonus damage from them. (C\u2019mon Perplexity, honestly.)<\/p>\n<p>Information often seemed outdated too. Perplexity said that Skyrim SE was on sale for $7.99 on Steam (it wasn\u2019t), and the sale extended until May 30\u2026 2024. It feels like Perplexity\u2019s index isn\u2019t anywhere near as fresh as other AI search engines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1365\" height=\"1088\" class=\"wp-image-183625\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-3.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-3.png 1365w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-3-533x425.png 533w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/word-image-183622-3-768x612.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px\"><\/p>\n<p>Perplexity also regularly failed to \u201cget\u201d the intent behind my searches, and defaulted to word salad paragraphs of text. When I searched for \u201cSteam skyrim\u201d, I got a long, rambling response with no actual link to Steam. ChatGPT excels with text-heavy queries, and kinda sucks for many others. Short-tail queries felt way more limited than Google. It returned good results for newer, trending topics (as did all the search engines, surprisingly).<\/p>\n<p>Most of all, I loved the visual sidebar that appeared for the short-tail searches, offering tons of facts and trivia for <em>skyrim<\/em>. This experience is obvious across commercial, local, and image searches where Google and Bing dominated the newer&nbsp;tools.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cpure\u201d AI search engines also unlock new types of search behavior. The query <em>Skyrim bosmer stealth archer build backstory <\/em>was sensational with ChatGPT, allowing me to actively brainstorm and refine a story in a way I never could with Google Search. Perplexity excelled at summarising news and complex information.<\/p>\n<p>Are the strengths of AI search engines enough to make up for their many weaknesses? Will searchers abandon a company that controls <a href=\"https:\/\/radar.cloudflare.com\/year-in-review\/2024#search-engine-market-share\">88.5% of the current search engine market<\/a> to experiment with relatively unproven new&nbsp;tools?<\/p>\n<p>More likely (in my estimation) is that we\u2019ll see the existing search engines build, integrate, and partner with AI companies to bring the best features into the existing search experience (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/23\/23733189\/chatgpt-bing-microsoft-default-search-openai-build\">Bing\u2019s partnership with OpenAI<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the best AI search engines are\u2014in my opinion\u2014ChatGPT Search for the best chatbot experience, and Google\u2019s AI Overviews for the best all-around search engine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I ran this test for two reasons: As a human being, I want to use the best search engine around.
