But the truth is that not all <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/free-seo-tools\">free SEO tools<\/a> are created equal \u2013 some are great, and some are <em>not<\/em> so great. So you need to be careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the ones I&nbsp;use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/about\">Google Search Console<\/a> \u2013 For many people Google Search Console, or \u201cGSC\u201d is the first tool you connect to your website to help diagnose technical issues and assess performance from Google\u2019s perspective. It\u2019s where a lot of my analysis has started off over the&nbsp;years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1119\" height=\"612\" class=\"wp-image-183042\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/google-search-console-screenshot.png\" alt=\"Google Search Console Screenshot\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/google-search-console-screenshot.png 1119w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/google-search-console-screenshot-680x372.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/google-search-console-screenshot-768x420.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1119px) 100vw, 1119px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.google.com\/analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a> \u2013 Although GA4 is not nearly as popular as its predecessors, Google Analytics is a necessary part of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-reporting\/\">SEO reporting<\/a>, and it\u2019s a useful tool for seeing what is going on outside of organic search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/webmaster-tools\">Ahrefs Webmaster Tools<\/a> \u2013 Ahrefs WMT is the best (free) way to get a taste of Ahrefs. Setup is fast if you already have access to GSC, and in a couple of clicks, you can start improving your website\u2019s SEO performance. I used it while working in an agency to run a quick audit of clients\u2019 sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/seo-spider\/\">Screaming Frog<\/a> \u2013 If you want to audit a website, Screaming Frog is one of the best tools for small sites, as you can use it in list mode for free or up to 500 URLs in crawling mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmaster\/tools\/contentremovalform\/\">Bing WMT<\/a> \u2013 Bing\u2019s version of GSC is one of the best ways to gain insights into how your website performs and diagnose website issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/free-seo-tools\">Ahrefs\u2019 Free SEO Tools<\/a> \u2013 Ahrefs has eight tools that you can check out completely for free. Covering everything from keyword research and link building to SERP and ranking checkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/\">Google Trends<\/a> \u2013 Allows you to understand trends of certain keywords. This type of data is especially interesting if you work in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ecommerce-seo\/\">ecommerce SEO<\/a>, as it can help you track product category trends and compare them against each&nbsp;other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8. <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.pinterest.com\/\">Pinterest Trends<\/a> \u2013 If you are working with a company that gets traction on Pinterest then Pinterest Trends might be a more useful tool than Google Trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9. <a href=\"https:\/\/colab.google\/\">Google Collab<\/a> \u2013 A <a href=\"https:\/\/jupyter.org\/\">Jupyter notebook<\/a>-style platform that requires no setup and is the easiest way to run a Python script. Google Collab is great if you work in an agency, as you can run small Python scripts without asking the IT department for admin access every five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en_uk\/chrome\/dev\/\">Chrome DevTools<\/a>\u2014DevTools is built into the Chrome browser and is one of the best free tools for diagnosing technical or performance issues with websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11. <a href=\"https:\/\/pagespeed.web.dev\/\">Page Speed Insights<\/a> \u2013 Helps you diagnose issues with <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/core-web-vitals\/\">Core Web Vitals<\/a> and other SEO performance issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12. <a href=\"https:\/\/lookerstudio.google.com\/\">Google Looker Studio<\/a> \u2013 Formerly known as Google Data Studio, this is a dashboarding platform for creating free SEO dashboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>13. <a href=\"https:\/\/ads.google.com\/intl\/en_uk\/home\/tools\/keyword-planner\/\">Google Keyword Planner<\/a> \u2013 Google\u2019s tool to help you identify the search volume of keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>14. <a href=\"http:\/\/webpagetest.org\">Webpagetest.org<\/a> \u2013 In years gone by, I\u2019ve seen this used by the team at Google. It helps measure the speed of your website and create a loading animation video to show the speed difference between competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15. <a href=\"https:\/\/technicalseo.com\/tools\/\">Dentsu\u2019s technical SEO tools<\/a> \u2013 Dentsu has a suite of 17 free SEO tools that you can use for free, covering everything from hreflang tag testers, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-create-a-sitemap\/\">XML sitemap<\/a> generators, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/schema-markup\/\">schema markup<\/a> generators, and much more. Its strength lies in its ability to simplify a lot of SEO optimization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19. <a href=\"https:\/\/rankmath.com\/\">RankMath<\/a> \u2013 RankMath is another popular WordPress SEO plugin. Like Yoast, it simplifies SEO optimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>20. <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/wordpress-seo-plugin\">Ahrefs WP Plugin<\/a> \u2013 Our tool allows you to run a full content audit on your website and suggests different improvement actions. It integrates with GA and GSC to help provide you with better-targeted keywords and content recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>21. <a href=\"https:\/\/tablepress.org\/\">TablePress<\/a> \u2013 If you work with data, you\u2019ll need to use a table in WordPress. If you work with clients, you need to stay on top of Google\u2019s latest updates and responses, and this is one of the best places to do&nbsp;that.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>23. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/AhrefsCom\">Ahrefs<\/a> \u2013 Video mastermind <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/author\/sam-oh\/\">Sam Oh<\/a> has been heading up the Ahrefs\u2019 YouTube channel for as long as I can remember.
