Is SEO <em>finally <\/em>dead? Or is everything fine?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Well, good news and bad news. For example, it recommended using non-toxic glue to give pizza sauce more tackiness, eating at least one small rock a day, and drinking urine to pass kidney stones quickly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>30 May 2024<\/strong> \u2014 Google responds to the brouhaha by <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-explains-how-it-is-improving-its-ai-overviews-442800\">explaining how it intends to improve AI Overviews<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>15 Aug 2024 \u2014 <\/strong>Google expands AI Overviews to six more countries: <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/new-ways-to-connect-to-the-web-with-ai-overviews\/\">the UK, India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil<\/a>. It also begins showing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-testing-ai-overviews-incognito-37907.html\">AI Overviews for Incognito mode<\/a> and users who are not signed in. Additionally, it launches the ability to \u201csave\u201d a specific AI Overview and tests adding links to relevant web pages directly within the text of AI Overviews.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>23 Aug 2024<\/strong> \u2014 Google\u2019s John Mueller confirms that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-confirms-ai-overviews-affected-by-core-updates\/525239\/\">AI Overviews are affected by core updates<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>28 October 2024<\/strong> \u2014 Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/ai-overviews-search-october-2024\/\">expands AI Overviews<\/a> to more than 100 countries and territories around the world. This expansion also adds support for multiple languages: English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Google also rolled out a new desktop design with a right-hand panel of source links for AI Overviews, and officially launched in-line links within the AI summary text for all&nbsp;users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5 March 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/ai-mode-search\/\">announces<\/a> an upgrade to AI Overviews. AI Overviews in the U.S. are now powered by Gemini 2.0, a more advanced model, which improves quality and allows AI Overviews to appear for more complex queries (e.g., coding questions, advanced math, and even some multimodal queries with images). Google also announces a new feature called <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ai-mode\/\">AI Mode<\/a> as a Labs experiment. With AI Mode, you\u2019ll be able to ask complex, multi-part questions and ask follow-ups to dig deeper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25 March 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/feed\/were-bringing-the-helpfulness-of-ai-overviews-to-more-countries-in-europe\/\">expands<\/a> AI Overviews to more countries in Europe: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. This expansion also added new supported languages, such as German, Italian, Polish, and French (via Switzerland). Due to regulatory considerations, Google rolled this out in Europe to signed-in users aged 18+&nbsp;only.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>11 April 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-ai-overviews-links-search-results-39221.html\">confirms<\/a> that AI Overviews links to their own search results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>23 April 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Google <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/thread\/18138167?hl=en&amp;msgid=340138072\">begins testing<\/a> AI Overviews on YouTube.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>20 May 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/google-search-ai-mode-update\/\">rolls out<\/a> AI mode to everyone in the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s iterative approach means AI Overviews are continually being refined. Coupled with Google\u2019s AI Mode experiment, search, or at least Google Search, is about to change <em>a lot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Google still <a href=\"https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/search-engine-market-share\">has<\/a> the largest market share in the world. This means the AI doesn\u2019t just rely on its pre-trained knowledge (which could be outdated or generic). Instead, it actively retrieves fresh information from the web and uses that to construct its answer.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>AI Overviews is <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024\/\">powered by Google\u2019s own LLM, Gemini<\/a>. Thanks to Rich Sanger, who looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US11769017B1\/en\">Google\u2019s patent<\/a>, we have an idea of how Google\u2019s AI Overviews work:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You enter a search query.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google\u2019s LLMs work to understand the context and intent of your&nbsp;query.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google\u2019s systems then fetch relevant content from the index. It also considers related searches or what others tend to click on for similar queries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alarge language model (LLM)\u2014like Google\u2019s Gemini\u2014takes all that collected information and synthesizes a summary answer. This summary aims to directly address your query in a helpful way, often combining points from several sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google then attaches citations (links) to the actual source web pages within the AI-generated response. This is what Google refers to as <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/vertex-ai\/generative-ai\/docs\/grounding\/overview\">\u201cgrounding\u201d<\/a> the answer. Grounding helps ensure accuracy and lets users click through to verify information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over time, the system learns from user interactions. together<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019d like to track the visibility of AI Overviews, you\u2019ll have to use a third-party tool like Ahrefs.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you enter your domain into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a> and go to the <strong>Organic keywords <\/strong>report, you can filter for keywords where you\u2019re ranking best bet is to continue following <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-best-practices\/\">SEO best practices<\/a> and aim to rank high on Google itself.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if we look at Rich Sanger\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/richsanger.com\/google-ai-overview-study-link-selection-based-on-related-queries\/\">recommendations from his latest study on AIOs<\/a>, you\u2019d find that it is essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/seo-basics\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-basics\/\">SEO basics<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img To put it in layman\u2019s terms, Google wants to reward new information, not copycat content.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In fact, when <a href=\"https:\/\/richsanger.com\/ai-overview-optimization-insights-from-googles-patent\/\">Rich Sanger analyzed the patent<\/a>, it suggested that Google was indeed looking for diversity:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut understand that the AI Overview doesn\u2019t only provide documents from the top sources for that query. <strong>It seeks out diversity. If the top-ranked content for that query is homogenous, it will move on to closely related queries.<\/strong> Earning top page rankings along with visibility in the AI Overview for targeted queries is the best case scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>How can you add \u2018information gain\u2019 to your content? There are three&nbsp;ways:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Experimentation<\/strong> \u2014 Go into the real world, test ideas, and collect data that no one else&nbsp;has.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Experience<\/strong> \u2014 Actually experience the thing you\u2019re making content about.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Effort<\/strong> \u2014 Go beyond others and make better things or things that are more than words on a&nbsp;page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Ryan expands on each concept in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-stand-out-from-ai-content\/\">his article on standing out from AI content<\/a>. Bear in mind that this is a drastic measure, as it prevents Google from both showing your content in AI Overviews and the&nbsp;SERPs.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>However, Google does provide an alternative method: <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/blog\/2019\/09\/more-controls-on-search\">\u2018preview controls\u2019<\/a>, which are a way to tell Google not to provide a snippet in the SERPs or limit the amount of content that can be&nbsp;used.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Glenn Gabe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsqi.com\/marketing-blog\/how-to-remove-content-and-links-from-google-ai-overviews\/\">ran an experiment<\/a> to test whether Google would respect this.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The result? It did, but it took some time (and even a ping to Google\u2019s John Mueller) for it to finally work.
