While they may have some challenges with <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/link-building\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">link building<\/a>, these companies also have a ton of opportunities because of who they are and how much money is at&nbsp;stake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Links play a role in many of Google\u2019s systems including <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/eeat-seo\/\">Experience Expertise Authoritativeness Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T)<\/a>. As Google <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/documents\/37\/How_Google_Fights_Disinformation.pdf\/\">says<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Google\u2019s algorithms identify signals about pages that correlate with trustworthiness and authoritativeness. The best known of these signals is <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-pagerank\/\">PageRank<\/a>, which uses links on the web to understand authoritativeness.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Links are still an important ranking factor in Google. I ran a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/impact-of-links\/\">study to measure the impact of links<\/a> and removed good links using the disavow tool. Being successful in large organizations requires more than just subject matter expertise. You also need to know politics, sales, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-project-management\/\">project management<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-176738-_ki6lqywxpird\"><\/a>Getting buy-in and budget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most companies I\u2019ve worked with didn\u2019t allow employees to represent the brand. That\u2019s legal speak for \u201cthe employees aren\u2019t allowed to do outreach.\u201d That doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t get links, it just means you have to be creative and get them in other&nbsp;ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not the same for every company. I know some that just don\u2019t do link building, some have minimal link building programs where they can do a few tasks, some have fully developed programs, and many just offload link building to third-party vendors because that is likely the easiest option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first step is to plan out what you want to do and figure out who you need to work with for approvals and to get the work done. I\u2019ll cover this more in the next section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the project, you may have to go through legal and compliance teams to get permission. In my experience this is where many projects die. If you\u2019re required to go through legal, the chance you\u2019ll be approved goes down by a&nbsp;lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next challenge is getting a budget for the activities. My best tip is to equate the projects to revenue, or as close as you can get to it with some other value metric. For example, I\u2019ve managed to get redirect projects off the ground by using a number like $400 for each referring domain recovered as the&nbsp;value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find those opportunities in Ahrefs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paste your domain into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <strong>Best by links<\/strong> report<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a \u201c404 not found\u201d HTTP response filter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I usually sort this by \u201cReferring domains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1942\" height=\"1327\" class=\"wp-image-176740\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/best-by-links-filtered-to-404-shows-you-redirect-o.png\" alt=\"Best by links filtered to 404 shows you redirect opportunities\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/best-by-links-filtered-to-404-shows-you-redirect-o.png 1942w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/best-by-links-filtered-to-404-shows-you-redirect-o-622x425.png 622w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/best-by-links-filtered-to-404-shows-you-redirect-o-768x525.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/best-by-links-filtered-to-404-shows-you-redirect-o-1536x1050.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1942px) 100vw, 1942px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So for this example, let\u2019s say I do 250 redirects that on average have 10 RDs. That\u2019s 250 x 10 x $400 = $800,000 as a value I can use to pitch for the redirect project. It\u2019s typically a large enough number for the project to get attention and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-176738-_8e3unst6wek6\"><\/a>Prioritization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enterprise companies have a lot of products and services, and enterprise websites usually have a lot of pages. What teams do you work with? What pages do you prioritize building links to? These aren\u2019t easy questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My best recommendation is to align to company or team goals. Most companies or teams have some products they prioritize or want to improve and that\u2019s where you\u2019re most likely to be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-buy-in\/\">get buy-in<\/a> for link building projects. Someone\u2019s bonus is likely tied to the success of these projects, and they\u2019re willing to invest resources to make sure they hit their targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-176738-_8g5cl3aatj8m\"><\/a>Coordination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the enterprise level, a lot of link building is done by other teams, not necessarily the SEO team. Big companies have a lot of exposure and they\u2019re doing a lot of different things that may result in them getting links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may see TV commercials, hear radio ads, have teams creating new content. Then there\u2019s public relations, social media, paid advertising, content syndication, events, corporate partnerships, influencers, celebrity advertising, affiliate programs, and&nbsp;more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most links will probably happen without you, but you can help guide many of the teams in charge of these channels with best practices that can help you get more or better links. Take advantage of any internal training sessions where you may have the opportunity to present. Such linkable assets can take on many different forms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Industry surveys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Studies and research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online tools and calculators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awards and rankings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How-to guides and tutorials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Definitions and coined terms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infographics, GIFographics, and \u201cMap-o-graphics\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use any industry-famous employees or thought leaders you have to create interesting quotes that might be linked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a phenomenon where high-ranking pages get linked to more over time. Consolidating similar content into comprehensive guides or pillar pages can improve your chances of ranking and earning links. To do that, you usually combine the content and redirect one page to the&nbsp;other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1236\" class=\"wp-image-176743\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/keyword-cannibalization.png\" alt=\"Keyword cannibalization\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/keyword-cannibalization.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/keyword-cannibalization-550x425.png 550w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/keyword-cannibalization-768x593.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/keyword-cannibalization-1536x1187.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-176738-_77g9j2hffnzo\"><\/a>Promote your content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The more visibility your content gets, the more links you are likely to get naturally. Leverage those other teams I talked about earlier to promote your content on social and maybe paid media. Use influencer relationships to amplify your reach. Use your PR teams for potential media coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that these other teams are busy and have their own priorities as well. Be selective on what you ask them to promote. If you ask for them to promote everything, they\u2019re likely to promote nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-176738-_fj3dnxau8w7t\"><\/a>Go after unlinked brand mentions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/unlinked-mentions\/\">Unlinked brand mentions<\/a> are online mentions (citations) of your brand\u2014or anything directly related to your brand\u2014that <strong>do not <\/strong>link back to your&nbsp;site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enterprise companies tend to get talked about a fair bit, and each one of those mentions offers a chance to get a link. Even if there\u2019s not initially a link, it doesn\u2019t hurt to ask for one. You can use <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a> to find these mentions on the web, and the inbuilt filter for highlighting unlinked domains to hone in on unlinked mentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also look for unlinked brand mentions of key employees, famous quotes of theirs, or statistics from your studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1052\" class=\"wp-image-176744\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/find-unlinked-brand-mentions-with-content-explorer.png\" alt=\"Find unlinked brand mentions with Content Explorer\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/find-unlinked-brand-mentions-with-content-explorer.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/find-unlinked-brand-mentions-with-content-explorer-680x358.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/find-unlinked-brand-mentions-with-content-explorer-768x404.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/find-unlinked-brand-mentions-with-content-explorer-1536x808.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-176738-_yee35ote4u17\"><\/a>Recover links with link reclamation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites, and the web in general, are always changing. We ran a study that found that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-rot-study\/\">~two-thirds of links to pages on the web disappeared<\/a> in the nine-year period we looked at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, your old URLs have links from other websites. Don\u2019t be scared away; you just have to download a couple of files and upload them. The Colab notebook walks you through it and takes care of the heavy lifting for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this script could be run periodically, if you\u2019re constantly having to do redirects, I would recommend that you automate the implementation. You could pull data from the Ahrefs API and visits from your analytics into a system. Then create logic like &gt;3 RDs, &gt;5 hits in a month, etc. and flag these to be redirected, suggest redirects, or even automatically redirect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had redirects in place for a year or more already, the value is likely already consolidated to the new pages. That\u2019s what Google recommends and seemed to be true when <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/are-pemanent-redirects-permanent\/#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20Google's%20Gary%20Illyes,on%20from%20A%20to%20B.&amp;text=This%20means%20that%2C%20in%20theory,new%20one%20after%20a%20year.\">we tested it<\/a>. Sometimes different people are responsible for different sections of the website, which can make internal linking time-consuming and may require meetings and a lot of follow up to get internal linking done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of the political hurdles, the process for internal linking can be a bit convoluted.
