And like most <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-content-optimization-tools\/\">content optimization tools<\/a>, we score how well your articles are optimized.<\/div>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1300\" class=\"wp-image-188039\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ahrefs-ai-content-helper.png\" alt=\"Ahrefs' AI Content Helper\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ahrefs-ai-content-helper.png 2048w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ahrefs-ai-content-helper-670x425.png 670w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ahrefs-ai-content-helper-260x166.png 260w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ahrefs-ai-content-helper-768x488.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ahrefs-ai-content-helper-1536x975.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Built within these scores is an implicit assumption that the higher your score, the higher you\u2019ll likely rank on Google.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>But is that actually true?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>To find out, I studied the correlation between rankings and content scores from five content optimization tools: Surfer, Frase, NeuronWriter, Clearscope, and our own AI Content Helper.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We found <strong>weak correlations everywhere.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>But out of the five tools I tested<strong>, <\/strong>NeuronWriter and AI Content Helper fared the best. But \u2018weak\u2019 doesn\u2019t mean \u2018useless\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Google uses hundreds of ranking signals to determine how pages rank. While correlation may not be causation, even a weak positive correlation means content scores can still move the needle.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Especially when it\u2019s a factor you directly control.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Imagine if you had a button you could press that would give you a 10% chance of improving your rankings by one or two places. Would you press&nbsp;it?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>I would spam the hell out of that button.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>These tools are inexpensive, and you can use them to generate a positive impact on your rankings. I then entered these keywords into each tool and generated content reports. I jotted down the scores for each URL on the&nbsp;SERPs.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Despite their increasing prominence in the SERPs, most of the tools had trouble analyzing Reddit, Quora, and YouTube. They typically gave a zero or no score for these results. If they showed no scores, we excluded them from the analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Clearscope was the only tool that graded the SERPs, rather than showing a numerical score. I used ChatGPT to convert those grades into numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Since each tool pulled a slightly different SERP for each keyword, we separated the data by keyword and calculated the correlation between ranking and scores within each keyword instead.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>We calculated both Spearman and Kendal correlations and took the average. Spearman correlations are more sensitive and therefore more prone to being swayed by small sample size and outliers. On the other hand, the Kendall rank correlation coefficient only takes order into account. Focus on topic coverage, not keyword density<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Google wants you to provide a comprehensive description of the topic you\u2019re targeting. For example, if your score is significantly lower than the scores of competing pages, you\u2019re probably missing important subtopics that searchers care&nbsp;about.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>However, you need to be aware of how your chosen tool\u2019s content score is calculated. In many tools, the score is largely based on how many times you use the recommended set of keywords. Use relative scores as benchmarks<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t obsess over getting a perfect 100. Instead, use scores as a relative benchmark against top-ranking content.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If competing pages score in the 80-85 range while your page scores 79, it likely isn\u2019t worth worrying about. But if it\u2019s 95 vs. 20 then yeah, you should probably try to cover the topic better.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-188038-_sm0clav2nuyb\"><\/a>3. Balance optimization with originality<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Content scores tell you how well you\u2019re covering the topic based on what\u2019s already out there. If you cover all important keywords and subtopics from the top-ranking pages and create the ultimate copycat content, you\u2019ll score full&nbsp;marks.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This is a problem because quality content should bring something new to the table, not just rehash existing information. Consider search intent first, scores second<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Before diving into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-optimization\/\">content optimization<\/a>, make sure you understand what users actually want.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Content scores are most valuable when they\u2019re guiding content that already matches the right <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent\/\">search intent<\/a>. Just don\u2019t obsess and spend hours trying to get a perfect score; scoring in the same ballpark as top-ranking pages is enough.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n<p>You also need to be aware of their downsides, most notably that they can\u2019t help you craft unique content.
