And last time I announced our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timsoulo\/status\/1765249920884527210\">newest addition<\/a> to Keywords Explorer, someone replied with&nbsp;this:<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I mean it is good for seasonal keywords but to be honest it would be great if the search volume in general would be more accurate\u2026<\/p>\u2014 Kim von D\u00e4niken (@KimvonDaniken) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KimvonDaniken\/status\/1765252756791509252?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6,&nbsp;2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Which was not the first time I saw us being criticized for the accuracy of our search volume metric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the kicker\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s <strong>NO SUCH THING<\/strong> as an accurate search volume:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The volumes in Google Keyword Planner aren\u2019t accurate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The \u201cImpressions\u201d in GSC aren\u2019t accurate either.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And the metric itself is just an average of the past&nbsp;data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I already published <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-search-volume\/\">a pretty detailed article about the search volume metric back in 2021<\/a>. But I don\u2019t think too many people have read&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEverything that needs to be said has already been said. So the numbers in GKP are rounded and bucketed and clustered together and all that. But Google Search Console (GSC) shows you the <em>actual<\/em> impressions for a given keyword, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, did you know that a simple rank-tracking tool can easily pollute your GSC impressions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/JoyanneHawkins\/status\/1719329569700770157\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of how many different \u201crobots\u201d might be scraping the search results for a given keyword, and therefore giving you a fairly inaccurate impression of its real (human-driven) search volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And besides, in order to see the actual monthly search volume your page has to be ranking at the top 10 for thirty days straight. And it should rank nationwide, just in case the search results might differ based on the location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, I\u2019m sure GSC is no different from any other analytics tool in the sense that it might have certain discrepancies in \u201ccounting\u201d those impressions. I mean, go compare the \u201cClicks\u201d you see reported by GSC with your server log files. Don\u2019t you think the monthly search volume of a given keyword will change by&nbsp;then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s actually the exact reason why we\u2019ve added search volume forecasting to our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> tool. No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But does it help to streamline your keyword research and make better decisions? What would you use it for? Would you be able to predict your real search traffic from that keyword?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t know for sure at which position your page will end up ranking. Today it\u2019s #3, tomorrow it\u2019s #5, the day after is #1. Rankings are volatile and you rarely retain a given position for a long enough period of&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even if you did: you can\u2019t get accurate data on the click-through rate (CTR) of each position in Google. Each SERP is unique, and Google keeps rolling out more and more SERP features that steal clicks away. So even if you knew<em> exactly<\/em> the search volume of a keyword and the <em>exact<\/em> position where your page would sit\u2026 you still would not be able to calculate the accurate amount of search traffic that you\u2019ll get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pages don\u2019t rank for a single keyword!<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/also-rank-for-study\/\">Seven years ago we published a study<\/a> showing that a typical page that ranks at the top of Google for some keyword would actually rank for about a thousand more related keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s the point of trying to gauge your clicks from a single keyword, when you\u2019ll end up ranking for a thousand of them all at the same&nbsp;time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the takeaway from all this&nbsp;is\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" id=\"section1\"><a class=\"subhead-anchor\" data-tip=\"tooltip__copielink\" rel=\"#section1\"><svg width=\"19\" height=\"19\" viewBox=\"0 0 14 14\" style><g fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\"><path d=\"M0 0h14v14H0z\" \/><path d=\"M7.45 9.887l-1.62 1.621c-.92.92-2.418.92-3.338 0a2.364 2.364 0 0 1 0-3.339l1.62-1.62-1.273-1.272-1.62 1.62a4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.885 5.884l1.62-1.62L7.45 9.886zM5.527 5.135L7.17 3.492c.92-.92 2.418-.92 3.339 0 .92.92.92 2.418 0 3.339L8.866 8.473l1.272 1.273 1.644-1.643A4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.897 2.22L4.254 3.863l1.272 1.272zm-.66 3.998a.749.749 0 0 1 0-1.06l2.208-2.206a.749.749 0 1 1 1.06 1.06L5.928 9.133a.75.75 0 0 1-1.061 0z\" style \/><\/g><\/svg><\/a><div class=\"link-text\" data-anchor=\"'Directionally accurate' is accurate enough\" data-section=\"directionally-accurate\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-173107-_eriu5z3zb8q4\"><\/a>\u201cDirectionally accurate\u201d is accurate enough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here at Ahrefs we spend a tremendous amount of time, effort and resources to make sure our keyword database is in good shape, both in terms of its coverage of existing search queries, and the SEO metrics we give you for each of these keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of our SEO metrics are \u201caccurate\u201d though. Not search volume, nor <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-difficulty\/\">keyword difficulty<\/a>, nor <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ahrefs-seo-metrics\/#tp\">traffic potential<\/a>, you name&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But none of them can&nbsp;be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re designed to be \u201cdirectionally accurate.\u201d They give you an overall idea of the search demand of a given keyword and if it\u2019s a lot higher (or lower) compared to some other keywords which you are considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t use those metrics to work out the \u201creal\u201d search volume or click-through rate of keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But hundreds of thousands of SEO professionals around the world are using these exact metrics to guide their SEO strategies and they get precisely the results that they expect to&nbsp;get.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which was not the first time I saw us being criticized for the accuracy of our search volume metric.
