Operational metrics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of metric measures the efficiency of the content team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These metrics make perfect sense. Once you get a good grasp of your content strategy, you want to scale. In other words, once something starts to bring results, you want to do more of&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two metrics you should consider here&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Publishing frequency.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meeting deadlines.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first one, pointed out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769\/?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153336026977972224%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153336026977972224%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Sara Stella Lantazio<\/a>, is about the number of articles, videos, social media posts, emails, etc. published in a given period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Publishing frequency takes advantage of the very nature of content marketing - the more you do it, the better the results because they compound, and the easier it is to get those results, too. This might be helpful for in-house teams, but it\u2019s super important for agencies. Keywords<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve received many responses underlining the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/organic-search\/\">organic search traffic<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-are-keywords\/\">keywords<\/a> are the absolute cornerstone of this channel. As you probably already know, the higher you rank for keywords, the more visible your pages are on the search engines like Google, and the more traffic you&nbsp;get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The metrics that marketers mentioned to us&nbsp;were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Impressions<\/strong>: how often a site appears in search results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rankings<\/strong>: what pages rank for a given keyword. That\u2019s how you know if your SEO is working and when to step in to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-optimization\/\">optimize your content<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organic keyword growth<\/strong>: the number of keywords that a page or site ranks for. As pointed out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153333252638810113%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153333252638810113%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Goran Mirkovic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153449278076522496%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153449278076522496%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Jacob McMillen<\/a> this metric is especially helpful on new content to see if Google starts to rank&nbsp;it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rate of keyword acquisition<\/strong>: very similar to the metric above, but this time we\u2019re interested in how <em>fast<\/em> Google ranks content. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153336762495315968%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153336762495315968%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Samantha North<\/a> said, \u201cin my experience, when it picks up lots of keywords quickly, it\u2019s going to rank&nbsp;well\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share of voice<\/strong>: percentage of all possible organic clicks (from SERPs) for the tracked keywords landing on your website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of tools you\u2019ll need to track these metrics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console?hl=pl\"><strong>Google Search Console<\/strong><\/a>. The only tool that allows you to measure impressions in Google\u2019s SERPs reliably. Tools like Ahrefs allow you to tap into that data and get some more functionality out of it, but you still need to have GSC set&nbsp;up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/rank-tracker\"><strong>Ahrefs Rank Tracker<\/strong><\/a> or a similar rank tracking tool of your choice. Although GSC allows you to track rankings, it has very limited functionality with poor experience (<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/best-rank-tracker\/\">here\u2019s a long list of reasons why<\/a>). Backlinks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to keywords, backlinks are another thing content marketers use for measuring content performance. They are a measure of the impact of the content on the site\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there\u2019s a simple reason why backlinks are so important - they are still one of the strongest <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ranking-factors\/\">ranking factors<\/a>. The more backlinks a page gets, the higher its chances to&nbsp;rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/link-equity\">link equity<\/a> you acquire this way flows throughout the entire site through internal links and increases the site\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/website-authority\">authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our commentary: backlinks are increasingly hard to get. They\u2019ve become a currency of the web between those who need backlinks and those who can provide them. So, theoretically, backlinks should be a sign that your content is so good that people want to link to it, but in reality, some sites won\u2019t link until they get something in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we\u2019d say track backlinks but only to your <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-bait\/\">link bait content<\/a> or if you\u2019re doing link building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting insight into this topic came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153333252638810113%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153333252638810113%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Goran Mirkovic<\/a> \u2014 don\u2019t track backlinks in the very early stages of the site. It takes time to earn them, whether naturally or by link building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Tip<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>The quality of backlinks matters more than quantity. Leads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Leads measure the content\u2019s effectiveness in converting visitors into prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, this metric is used with either gated content that requires contact information to access or content that encourages the visitor to get in touch, for example, for free consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we\u2019ve heard from marketers is mostly pretty much the standard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MQLs (Marketing Qualified Leads)<\/strong>: these are potential customers who have shown more interest in what you\u2019re offering than the average visitor by leaving contact information. They might be ready to buy in the future, but they\u2019re not quite there&nbsp;yet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SQLs (Sales Qualified Leads)<\/strong>: these are a step further along than MQLs. They\u2019ve been reviewed by both the marketing and sales teams and are considered ready for a direct sales&nbsp;pitch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And there was one metric I don\u2019t see very often - <strong>high intent leads or HILs<\/strong>, shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/1amjoshbradley\">Josh Bradley<\/a>. These are the people who demonstrate a clear need for a product like yours. Traffic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic is the measure of content\u2019s effectiveness in attracting clicks to your site. That\u2019s right, not <em>unique users,<\/em> just their clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to measure traffic only for content that is actually designed to generate traffic. Some social media posts (if not most) or emails won\u2019t fall into this category because they are meant to be digested on the spot with no clear CTA guiding to the&nbsp;site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to measure traffic is to measure its growth. Marketers do it on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis. Shorter time periods are rare since <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/b2b-content-marketing\/\">content marketing<\/a> takes&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s a pro tip - if you want to see which content landed well, you can take the first 7-day period to identify that content.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI often measure how much traffic an article received in the first week. Standard metrics, natively tracked on the respective platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Ahrefs, we track some of these metrics, too. They\u2019re especially helpful for gauging the impact of new types of content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, if you\u2019re creating relevant and valuable content, the number of subscribers should be growing. But it\u2019s worth keeping in mind that there are some nuances here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Viewer fatigue. They\u2019ve learned what they wanted, your once-attractive format was viewed once too much; they\u2019ve basically outgrown your channel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreases caused by an algorithm change on YouTube.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve stepped into a niche too far away from their interests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some types of content or topics have a higher tendency to attract subscribers. It\u2019s supposed to be a proxy of how interesting\/entertaining your content is, but it\u2019s not always reliable since it\u2019s dependent on too many factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Audience size. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Algorithm changes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time of&nbsp;day.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relativity of the metrics themselves.<\/strong> Is a long time on the page always a good thing? If you\u2019re putting the most important information above the fold, could you blame content for not being scrolled all the way to the bottom?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content consumption trends.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We were informed about the following metrics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Likes and comments on social<\/strong> <strong>media<\/strong> (a tip from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnEclecticMix\/status\/1747814808945062210\">Nina Cleere, JD<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Email list engagement: <\/strong>how many people open your emails (open rate) and how many click on the links inside them (click rate)<strong>. <\/strong>Higher than ever unsubscribe rate is also a sign that people don\u2019t enjoy that type of email (a tip from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153740108704190464%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153740108704190464%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Ryan Robinson<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time on page: <\/strong>how long people spend reading or interacting with a specific page on your website (a tip from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153499502115475456%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153499502115475456%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Irene Malatesta<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scroll: <\/strong>how far down a page a visitor scrolls. In many cases, deeper scrolling should indicate the content is engaging enough to keep readers interested (a tip from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769\/?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7153492609976442880%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287153492609976442880%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Mariya Delano<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One interesting metric we saw was <strong>content mentioned in conversations<\/strong> with sales reps. So if the content makes its way into a prospect\u2019s hands and it\u2019s good or helpful enough to be mentioned in a conversation, that\u2019s huge. It\u2019s pure word-of-mouth, comparable to recommending music or a movie to a friend (thanks again for the tip, Sara Stella Lantazio).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another interesting insight about engagement came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7153331376295968769?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A7153331376295968769%2C7155159584872026112%29&amp;dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287155159584872026112%2Curn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7153331376295968769%29\">Rohan Hayes<\/a>. He tracks engagement only for the ideal consumer profiles. This refers to the number of times visitors download something from your website, like an ebook, or a whitepaper. High download rates can signal that your audience finds your content valuable (a tip from&nbsp;us).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Tip<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>For detailed data insights, like linking revenue to website traffic, ChatGPT can help.
