Figure out how to achieve it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If your goal is to build more backlinks, the process can be complex so I recommend reading our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/link-building\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">link building guide<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your goal is to rank higher and get <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-organic-traffic\/\">more organic traffic<\/a>, you\u2019ll likely have to audit your target page(s) to understand what you can fix to achieve your&nbsp;goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you want to make sure your target pages can be <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/robots-txt\/\">crawled<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-index\/\">indexed by Google<\/a>. In our case, our blog post is ranking #7, so it\u2019s clear that crawlability and indexability are not issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, the most common issues are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-169592-_5vk04p9ztbf3\"><\/a>No traffic potential<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can only get search traffic if you\u2019re targeting a topic people are searching for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you\u2019ve not been doing keyword research to find topics to target, it\u2019s time to start. You can also see the amount of search traffic (ST) each top-ranking page&nbsp;gets.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In our case, we were already targeting a keyword, \u201cblogging tips.\u201d It had 1,000 monthly searches and a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/academy\/how-to-use-ahrefs\/keywords-explorer\/\">traffic potential<\/a> of&nbsp;800.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, this wasn\u2019t the main&nbsp;issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"further-reading\"><div class=\"reading-title\">Further reading<\/div><div class=\"reading-content\">\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">Keyword Research: The Beginner\u2019s Guide by Ahrefs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-169592-_mxlpv45ivtz\"><\/a>Not enough backlinks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Backlinks are an important <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ranking-factors\/\">Google ranking factor<\/a>. If the pages outranking you have way more backlinks than you, it could be a reason why you\u2019re not ranking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To check this, enter your target keyword into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> and scroll down to <strong>SERP Overview<\/strong>. Otherwise, links could be the issue behind why you\u2019re not ranking as&nbsp;high.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our example, backlinks weren\u2019t a problem. We had more backlinks from more unique websites than the other top-ranking pages. If your content isn\u2019t matching why people are searching, Google won\u2019t rank it&nbsp;high.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we never ranked for the keyword \u2018backlink checker\u2019 in the early days. And the next step is none other than to execute on what you\u2019ve decided on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your page is completely misaligned with search intent or isn\u2019t about a topic with search traffic potential, then you\u2019ll need to go back to the drawing board and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/republishing-content\/\">rewrite<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately for us, this wasn\u2019t the case. Our audit suggested we could reach #1 by reworking some parts of our content. In fact, there were two potential actions we could&nbsp;take:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fill the missing <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/content-gap-analysis\/\">content gaps<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Format the post better to win the featured snippet&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the latter was the easier way to achieve our goal, we decided to do that first. Comparatively, the featured snippet was a list of tips with clear subheadings, whereas ours was on the vague&nbsp;side.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1230\" height=\"1140\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-13.png\" alt=\"The previous featured snippet for blogging tips, which features clear subheadings\" class=\"wp-image-169605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-13.png 1230w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-13-459x425.png 459w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-13-768x712.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1230px) 100vw, 1230px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"494\" height=\"1640\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-14.png\" alt=\"The subheadings of our blogging tips blog post, before it was updated\" class=\"wp-image-169606\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.30121951219512194;width:272px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-14.png 494w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-14-128x425.png 128w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-14-463x1536.png 463w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Our subheadings were vague and didn\u2019t clearly communicate what the tips were&nbsp;about.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We used <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/chatgpt-for-seo\/\">ChatGPT<\/a> to simplify the headings with this prompt:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019ll give you our blog content and I want you to rephrase the main tips which are heading tags so it\u2019s clear, direct, and easy to understand at a glance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We then updated the post and asked Google to recrawl the page on Google Search Console. A few hours later, we saw a jump in our mobile rankings, landing right behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/people-also-ask\/\">People Also Ask (PAA)<\/a> boxes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1210\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-15.jpg\" alt=\"Our blog post jumped to #1 behind the People Also Ask boxes after changing the subheadings\" class=\"wp-image-169607\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6611570247933884;width:446px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-15.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-15-281x425.jpg 281w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-15-768x1162.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, our desktop rankings didn\u2019t budge, so we assumed the result was temporary. We then decided to update our&nbsp;post.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We did this by downloading the list of keywords from the <strong>Also talk about<\/strong> report in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>, pasting it (alongside the content) into ChatGPT, and prompting it to tell us which keywords, entities, or subtopics we\u2019ve missed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then refreshed our content with these new&nbsp;tips.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day, we captured the featured snippet in New York. Five days later, we had the snippet in all 50 U.S states.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, even after the campaign ended, we\u2019re still ranking #1 in the U.S. for \u201cblogging tips\u201d:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"916\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-16.png\" alt=\"We're currently the featured snippet for the query &quot;blogging tips&quot; in the US\" class=\"wp-image-169608\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.21256038647343;width:513px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-16.png 916w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-16-680x307.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/word-image-169592-16-768x347.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 916px) 100vw, 916px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-169592-_zgwednx0w96e\"><\/a>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve actually documented our journey trying to boost our blogging tips blog post to the #1 position.
