These search vast databases for the things people are searching for about a&nbsp;topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a bunch of free ones\u2014like our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keyword-generator\">free keyword generator<\/a>\u2014so you can get started right away. This is because Google wants to rank relevant results that actually help&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you do&nbsp;that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understand the reason behind the search<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time someone Googles something, there is<strong> <\/strong>a reason. Maybe they want an answer to a question, navigate to a specific website, or buy something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever it is, you want to figure out the reason so you can create content that matches what they\u2019re looking for. In SEO terminology, we call this reason \u201csearch intent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some topics, the answer is right within the topic itself. For example, if someone is searching for \u201chow to make cold brew coffee,\u201d they\u2019re likely looking for a how-to guide on making the&nbsp;drink.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about a topic like \u201cbest coffee machine\u201d? Is someone looking for an opinion of the<strong> <\/strong>best coffee machine, a review<strong> <\/strong>of a coffee machine, or a list of the best coffee machines?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, Google has done the work for us here by ranking relevant results. This means we can use the top-ranking pages as a proxy for what people want. You need to include these to make it useful to as many searchers as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re targeting the keyword \u201chow to grind coffee beans.\u201d As a coffee pro, the answer probably seems immediately obvious: use a grinder. Your instinct, then, may be to tell searchers which kind of grinder to use and how to use&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes sense. But, if you open a few of the top-ranking pages, you see that they don\u2019t just talk about using a grinder. Many searchers probably don\u2019t own a coffee grinder, so they\u2019re looking for ways to grind their beans without one. Unless you tell them how to do this, your content won\u2019t cover what some, perhaps most, searchers want to&nbsp;know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this doesn\u2019t mean you have to include these exact methods. If they don\u2019t work, exclude them or explain why they\u2019re a bad idea. But covering everything searchers want to know is definitely going to involve giving alternative grinding methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showcase your experience or expertise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People want to learn from experts, so you need to make it clear that you\u2019re the right person to trust right off the&nbsp;bat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to do all of the above is to <strong>write from experience or expertise.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, there are hundreds of ways to become a content creator. But I knew only my path. Prove to Google that it deserves to&nbsp;rank<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Links from other websites are an important <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ranking-factors\/\">ranking factor<\/a>. Google even <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/now-know-googles-top-three-search-ranking-factors-245882\">said so<\/a> itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why this is the case is because Google sees links as \u201cvotes.\u201d These votes help Google identify which page on a topic (out of thousands of similar ones) deserves to rank at the&nbsp;top.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, as a general rule, pages with more backlinks tend to rank higher in search results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1740\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image13-9.png\" alt=\"Backlinks help pages rank higher in Google's search results\n\" class=\"wp-image-167344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image13-9.png 1800w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image13-9-440x425.png 440w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image13-9-768x742.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image13-9-1536x1485.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want your page to rank high, you need to get more links. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help visitors find your&nbsp;page<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever read a Wikipedia article, clicked on link after link, and wondered where the previous six hours went? Welcome to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wiki_rabbit_hole\">Wiki rabbit hole<\/a>, and it\u2019s powered by internal links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internal links are links within the same website. It\u2019s how many people discover new content to read. It\u2019s how Google discovers new pages too. So you\u2019ll want to add internal links to every new piece of content you publish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing: You don\u2019t want to add internal links from any old page.
