Therefore, their buyer\u2019s journey is relatively short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B2B products\/services typically need more careful decision-making. There are more decision-makers, and there\u2019s a higher need for educational content. Therefore, the journey is longer and takes more&nbsp;time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the theory. But how does B2B SaaS marketing work in practice? In this article, we\u2019re sharing our take on&nbsp;it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to do B2B SaaS marketing, the Ahrefs way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A little bit about <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/\">Ahrefs<\/a>. We\u2019re a bootstrapped company founded in 2011, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timsoulo\/status\/1633577077596381184\">we recently passed $100M in ARR<\/a>. Our business is an all-in-one SEO SaaS solution, and our customers are mostly businesses (small and big). We run a relatively small marketing team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what works in B2B marketing from our experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take a stake in product development&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s true that marketers bridge the gap between the company and the customers. This allows you to do four extremely important things:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find problems sooner than the customer&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be a true user\u2019s advocate in product development&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help prioritize feature development&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncover new market segments&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, the only way to achieve that is to spend a lot of time with the product. But having some kind of process in place helps. In the case of Ahrefs, that\u2019s mainly two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All marketers begin with one to two months in customer support. You can\u2019t touch any marketing before you complete that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most marketers take part in our product-led content strategy, which makes them essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/product-marketing\/\">product marketers<\/a>. They are important because they help you rank in Google (one of the key <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ranking-factors\/\">ranking factors<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original research, such as data studies, case studies, industry surveys, etc., attracts backlinks because other authors use them as sources. In turn, pages with a lot of backlinks accumulate <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/website-authority\">authority<\/a>, which you can guide to other valuable pages on your site to help them rank (see <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/orchard-seo-strategy\/\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-strategy\/\">Middleman Method<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, our study on why <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-traffic-study\/\">most content on the web gets no organic traffic<\/a> earned 5.9K backlinks from 2.8K referring domains and still keeps earning them without any effort from our&nbsp;side.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1864\" height=\"1520\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image15-3.png\" alt=\"No. of backlinks and referring domains, via Ahrefs' Site Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-166369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image15-3.png 1864w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image15-3-521x425.png 521w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image15-3-768x626.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image15-3-1536x1253.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1864px) 100vw, 1864px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data via Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As for thought leadership, the more competitive your SaaS niche is, the more you need&nbsp;it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When other sites mention your research, you start to be viewed as a trusted, highly regarded brand. You\u2019re no longer a \u201cstranger,\u201d and that really helps with&nbsp;sales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"956\" height=\"604\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image1-4.png\" alt=\"Ahrefs mentioned in a Forbes article\" class=\"wp-image-166373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image1-4.png 956w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image1-4-673x425.png 673w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image1-4-768x485.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 956px) 100vw, 956px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ways you can come up with ideas for your research:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Study popular topics in your niche and see if you can add to the conversation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge the status quo with fresh&nbsp;data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at others\u2019 research and see if there are any blanks you can&nbsp;fill&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To find popular topics in our niche, we often use our own <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a> (again, dogfooding). Chapter 2<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retain users by educating them<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In SaaS, one of the biggest challenges is churn\u2014the proportion of customers who stop paying for your product or service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We never believe in any marketing hacks that supposedly stop people from canceling their plans when they want to. Educational content is not about originality but the helpfulness and thoroughness of the context itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Network at industry events&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the startup\/small company level, what\u2019s important for SaaS companies at industry events is networking rather than sales. You can learn a lot from other SaaS companies and people who use their products. You may even meet your own&nbsp;users.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thing is, you don\u2019t really need a large budget to attend industry events because you don\u2019t really need to be an exhibitor or a sponsor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can come up with an interesting topic and pitch as a speaker. Zero&nbsp;cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can just go there as a regular attendee. These can include being featured as a sponsor, sponsored articles, or a shoutout during an interview on a podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reach and influence of content creators are a great opportunity for brands. Chances are, some creators are already attracting your target audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But should you expect instant sales from this channel? In our experience, that\u2019s a definitive no. Remember about the buyer\u2019s journey\u2014businesses need more&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you effectively can do with partnerships is generate brand awareness in a way that your audience can appreciate (you\u2019re supporting their favorite creators).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, you can try promoting something that needs less consideration than your core product. For instance, a free tool or a free course. Think of it as a faster route to your brand. I mean, your best prospects will probably come through references, which will come to you as you go. Also, a good content creator won\u2019t necessarily make a good partner. You need to do due diligence and invest in those who are willing to invest their time in&nbsp;you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, want to see what we learned after spending over $50K on <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/podcast-advertising\/\">sponsored podcasts<\/a>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t sleep on sales enablement&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re talking about resources that help the sales department engage with bigger accounts and close deals: pitch decks, articles, landing pages, battle cards, brochures for different types of accounts, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sales team is going to get a ton of uncomfortable questions related to your competitors, use cases, and every aspect of the product\u2019s functionality. Marketing is usually the best place to answer these questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But to be really helpful to sales, it\u2019s best to answer those questions before they&nbsp;come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No need for a complex system here. To start off on the right foot, you need only a few things. These are&nbsp;to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make a list of strengths and weaknesses of your solution. Strengths will help the sales reps guide the conversation, and knowing the weaknesses will help them address those beforehand.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask sales reps what kind of materials were helpful to them before.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a commitment to revisit the materials to see if anything needs regular updates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a place where sales reps can be notified of product updates. A good idea is something like a channel on Slack because people often have questions and comments about new releases.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use local marketing to penetrate key markets&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Promoting your product in English is the best bet to get customers all over the world. But if you\u2019re starting to see non-English-speaking countries becoming regular customers or competitors showing interest in those markets, you may need to invest in local marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, increasing our brand\u2019s awareness in Spanish-speaking countries required dedicating one person to just that. As Erik puts&nbsp;it:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This is a market where people prefer to make deals in the local language, despite the fact English is usually not a problem. People also appreciate that we\u2019re making an effort to be closer to them. It really helps to show our commitment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway here is that you may need to take <em>local<\/em> marketing into consideration while building a <em>global<\/em> marketing strategy. Think about it next time you\u2019re preparing your budget. Maybe there\u2019s already someone on your team who already has the necessary skills or is native to a key market?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things we don\u2019t do (but may work for&nbsp;you)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Marketing is not about pouring everything into one pot. It\u2019s about finding the right&nbsp;mix.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find the right mix, you need to experiment. We\u2019ve done our fair share of that, and we still do. Here are some things we tried or seriously considered. It\u2019s possible you\u2019ll find something that might work for your business:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/timsoulo\/status\/1633577077596381184\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few more tactics that tend to work in B2B&nbsp;SaaS:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Account-based marketing <\/strong>\u2013 It\u2019s about a close alignment of marketing and sales with the goal of targeting a narrow selection of potential customers. It\u2019s relatively easy to measure, and you can scale it fast. Each platform is different but definitely have a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ppc-marketing\/\">Google Ads<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/quora-ads\/\">Quora<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many tricks in the book, but it\u2019s not about how many you use.
