Do search engine optimization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Search engine optimization (or <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\">SEO<\/a>) is my preferred way of promoting a business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve done social media, email marketing, paid ads, and even phone calls and door-to-door sales\u2014none of them ever achieved the ROI that SEO has for me. Plus, you can do SEO entirely yourself, and it doesn\u2019t cost anything to do. You just need to learn the tactics, then write content and send outreach emails (more on that in a moment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m assuming you already have a website. If not, read <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-friendly-website\/\">our guide to building an SEO-friendly website<\/a> first. The truth is nearly every business needs a website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got your website, here are three steps to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\">optimize your website for search engines<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1. Find a keyword to target<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO is all about keywords. Keywords are the words or phrases people type into Google in order to get an answer. Until you know what keyword(s) you want to rank for, you won\u2019t know what kind of content you need to create in order to&nbsp;rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking for keywords, the things you should pay attention to are a mix&nbsp;of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Traffic potential<\/strong> \u2013 The sum of the organic traffic you can&nbsp;get.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Business potential<\/strong>&nbsp; \u2013 Can your business potentially make money if you rank highly for a given keyword?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ranking difficulty <\/strong>\u2013 How difficult it might be to rank higher than the competition for a given keyword.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Search intent <\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 What is the person actually looking for when they search for a given keyword?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of ways to find keywords. But one of the easiest is to come up with a broad \u201cseed\u201d keyword that relates to your niche, then plug it into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/seed-keywords\">seed keyword <\/a>is a generic, top-level keyword that encompasses a niche as a&nbsp;whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say my business sells coffee-related items. My first seed keyword would be \u201ccoffee.\u201d I can plug that into Keywords Explorer, then go to the <strong>Matching terms<\/strong> report to see a list of keywords that contain the word \u201ccoffee\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1013\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-14.png\" alt=\"Matching terms report for &quot;coffee&quot; in Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-165860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-14.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-14-680x345.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-14-768x389.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-14-1536x778.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This brings up over 3 million keywords\u2014far too many. Let\u2019s add some filters to narrow this&nbsp;list:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set <strong>KD <\/strong>(Keyword Difficulty) to a max of 30. This will show us only keywords that are relatively easy to rank for based on things like competitors\u2019 authority and backlinks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set <strong>volume<\/strong> to a minimum of 500. This will only show us keywords that get at least 500 monthly searches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1984\" height=\"1262\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-11.png\" alt=\"Matching terms report with filters applied, via Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-165862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-11.png 1984w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-11-668x425.png 668w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-11-260x166.png 260w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-11-768x489.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-11-1536x977.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1984px) 100vw, 1984px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This brought our results down to 8,045 keywords. That\u2019s still a lot, but things are much more manageable now. You can set stricter filters to narrow this down further if you&nbsp;want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scrolling through, I quickly found the keyword \u201ccoffee table with storage,\u201d which gets over 28,000 searches per month and has a KD of just 17\u2014meaning it could be easy for a new business to rank&nbsp;for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1072\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image10-11.png\" alt=\"Keyword data for &quot;coffee table with storage,&quot; via Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-165864\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image10-11.png 1072w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image10-11-680x226.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image10-11-768x255.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1072px) 100vw, 1072px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Checking the Google SERP (search engine results page) for this keyword, I can see three websites with relatively low Domain Rating (DR) scores of 27, 11, and 4 are ranking highly for this keyword\u2014despite not having any external backlinks pointing to&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1678\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-11.jpg\" alt=\"Google SERP for &quot;coffee table with storage&quot; showing DR data from Ahrefs' SEO Toolbar\" class=\"wp-image-165866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-11.jpg 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-11-506x425.jpg 506w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-11-768x645.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-11-1536x1289.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, newer websites can compete for this keyword, it has a very high traffic and business potential, and the search intent is for direct product sales pages where the searcher can buy the product. Create optimized content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have an idea of which keyword you want to rank for, it\u2019s time to create <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/seo-content\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-content\/\">search-optimized content<\/a> for that keyword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you have to understand before you create any content is what the search intent is for your chosen keyword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Search intent encompasses three&nbsp;Cs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ontent type<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ontent format<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ontent angle<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201ctype\u201d of content could be a blog post, video, product page, etc. The format could be a how-to guide, a list post, a review, etc. The content angle refers to the unique selling point of the top-ranking posts and pages\u2014things like whether it includes the year in the title or talks about a certain subtopic over anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lot that goes into understanding search intent, so check out <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent\/\">our full guide to search intent<\/a> to learn&nbsp;more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last example, the search intent is a product page. Once you start creating the content, you also need to follow some on-page SEO best practices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Including alt text on your images<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setting proper meta&nbsp;tags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Including relevant internal links<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the checklist in our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/on-page-seo\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/on-page-seo\/\">complete guide to on-page SEO<\/a> to make this step easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3. Build&nbsp;links<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/internal-link\">internal links<\/a> (links from one page on your site to another page on your site) and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/backlinks\">backlinks<\/a> (links from someone else\u2019s website pointing to your website).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add internal links contextually when creating content. They help Google (and users) find your pages and boost their <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/website-authority\">authority<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>External backlinks, on the other hand, can be difficult to come by. But they are one of the most important <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ranking-factors\/\">Google ranking factors<\/a>. Without them, you will have a hard time ranking highly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are four basic ways to build backlinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-10.png\" alt=\"The four ways to build backlinks\n\" class=\"wp-image-165869\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-10.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-10-680x252.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-10-768x284.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-10-1536x568.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adding links to other websites <\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>Examples include doing so on your social media profiles and in business listing directories. This is the easiest method but will likely have the least impact on your rankings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Asking for links via outreach<\/strong> \u2013 This is probably where most of your links will come from in the beginning until you\u2019re more well known. There are many tactics to build links this way, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/broken-link-building\/\">broken link building<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/guest-blogging\/\">guest blogging<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/resource-page-link-building\/\">resource page link building<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buying links<\/strong> \u2013 We don\u2019t recommend this method, as <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/essentials\/spam-policies#link-spam\">Google considers this link spam<\/a>. Create (or improve) your Google Business page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a physical business, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/google-business-profile\">Google Business Profile<\/a> (GBP) will help you show up on Google searches and in Google Maps\u2014which is how most people find local businesses these&nbsp;days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s one of the best free ways to promote your business that actually works. Reviews are extremely important to rank at the top of the search results. However, posting randomly without a strategy won\u2019t do anything but waste your&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to effectively advertise your business on social media:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1. Choose the right social platform<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t try to do it all. While you can and should create a profile on the big social media platforms so you don\u2019t lose your handle, it\u2019s not necessary to use them all right off the&nbsp;bat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, see where your competitors are getting most of their traffic from and start with those platforms. You can find that information using Similarweb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back to my \u201ccoffee\u201d example\u2014let\u2019s look at Death Wish Coffee to see where it\u2019s succeeding on social:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1079\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image9-13-1.jpg\" alt=\"Death Wish Coffee social media traffic, according to Similarweb\" class=\"wp-image-165873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image9-13-1.jpg 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image9-13-1-680x367.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image9-13-1-768x415.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image9-13-1-1536x829.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, it gets the majority of its traffic from Instagram. I wouldn\u2019t choose Instagram from just one example. But if several of your competitors are all succeeding on the same platform, that\u2019s a good sign it\u2019s a good platform to&nbsp;use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2. Create a content strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you need to make a game plan. What kind of content will you create? How frequently will you post? Who will make and post the content? What hashtags should you&nbsp;use?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all questions you need to answer. A little brainstorming goes a long way. Automate your posting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remembering to post every day can quickly get exhausting. Instead, it\u2019s best to set aside time every week to schedule all your posts for that week or even for the whole&nbsp;month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use automation tools like Buffer or Hootsuite to schedule and automate your posting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4. Interact with your followers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While it can be tempting to just \u201cset it and forget it,\u201d the most value from social media will come from interacting with your followers. If you\u2019re lucky enough to get people to comment on your posts, it\u2019s worthwhile to take the time to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can even respond to comments right from your automation tool if you choose Buffer or Hootsuite. Again, this can be a weekly task\u2014although people will appreciate faster response times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5. Track results and tweak over&nbsp;time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the reasons most businesses fail with social media is that they aren\u2019t setting goals or tracking progress. How can you know if something is doing well if you aren\u2019t tracking it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buffer and Hootsuite offer analytics to see how well your posts are doing, along with valuable information like which posts are performing the best and which times of day are best for posting. I even have a friend who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mike_r_blanke\/status\/1638474057564782592?s=46&amp;fbclid=IwAR2Rl-HzPDw6-dTx3tZQLXltGhvNa67Y8giOxqVWzXZwwtds1Jgzv7_NAik\">acquired over 800 new customers<\/a> for a measly ad spend of $24.68.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how he did&nbsp;it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1. Build a landing page worth reading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People often send ad clicks straight to a product page or their homepage. Be a&nbsp;guest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Making a guest appearance on other people\u2019s blogs, podcasts, or YouTube channels is a great way to get free advertising for your own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, when I first started my SEO business, I got three of my biggest clients because they either read one of my guest posts or heard me as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eofire.com\/podcast\/billwidmer\/\">a guest on the EOfire podcast<\/a>\u2014neither of which cost me a penny. Identify potential places to be a&nbsp;guest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Find blogs, podcasts, or YouTube channels that are complementary (not each other\u2019s competition).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For my SEO business, I wrote guest posts on marketing blogs like Hootsuite, Social Media Examiner, and Conversion Science. These blogs all discuss marketing but don\u2019t offer SEO, so working together is a win-win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this step, just head to Google and look up keywords related to your niche. If you sell coffee, for example, search \u201ccoffee,\u201d \u201chow to make coffee,\u201d etc., and look at any blogs that write about coffee but don\u2019t sell&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-advanced-search-operators\/\">search operators<\/a> to make your life easier. You can find blogs actively looking for guest writers by adding things like \u201cwrite for us\u201d (including the quotes). If you get Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo-toolbar\">SEO Toolbar<\/a>, you can see stats like DR at a glance and prioritize reaching out to sites with higher DR scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2. Reach out and&nbsp;ask<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve found a few potential targets, head to their contact page and send them a message. You can send something like this (but it\u2019s always good to write your&nbsp;own):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hey {their name},<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My name is {your name}. I\u2019m reaching out because I just {read their blog post\/listened to their podcast\/watched their YouTube channel} and loved&nbsp;it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>{Write something specific on what you enjoyed about their content.}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m also into {subject}, and I was wondering if you\u2019d be open to me {writing a guest post\/being a guest on their podcast, YouTube channel, etc.}.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d love to talk about {topic} because {why you care about that topic}. I\u2019ve personally had success with every one of these strategies, but they do take time and have a bit of a learning curve if you\u2019re new to&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice is to pick one or two and try them for at least a few months. None of these will give you overnight success (except maybe paid advertising if you\u2019re really good at it).
