I tried everything from e-commerce and dropshipping, to making my own products for Etsy, to photography, and even selling kitchen knives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I finally settled on freelance writing, which quickly grew into full-service SEO and eventually led to me starting my own websites for <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/affiliate-marketing\/\">affiliate marketing<\/a>. Browse existing businesses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the easiest ways to find a niche is by browsing business sales directories like Flippa and Empire Flippers to find data on already existing businesses and see what niches they\u2019re in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you create an account, you can see information like what niche the website is in, how much the monthly revenue and net profit were over the last 12+ months, and even some analytics data\u2014all for&nbsp;free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"937\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-2.png\" alt=\"Empire Flippers' business marketplace\" class=\"wp-image-164511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-2.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-2-680x319.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-2-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image13-2-1536x720.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Empire Flippers mostly sells affiliate websites. Flippa, on the other hand, gives you the option to browse e-commerce, SaaS, service-based businesses, and more. It also shows financial and traffic information for each website listed for&nbsp;sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this information to understand the pulse of a niche and what you can potentially earn in&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Use Google Ads&nbsp;data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another method is to use the \u201ctraffic value\u201d metric in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a> to find the potential value of the traffic going to sites in a given&nbsp;niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic value is the estimated value of the organic traffic a website receives if it were to purchase that same traffic through Google Ads instead of receiving it organically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea here is that if advertisers are paying a lot of money to appear in the search results for these <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/keywords\">keywords,<\/a> then it\u2019s likely that the traffic from those keywords makes the site a lot of&nbsp;money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To use this data to find a niche, head over to Content Explorer and enter a topic you are interested in. If you have no idea what topic to enter, you can try the following keywords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAmazon associates\u201d to find affiliate websites with an Amazon associates disclaimer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBuy\u201d to find e-commerce and some service websites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSell\u201d to find other general ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, set the minimum website traffic value to 5,000 by going to <em>More filters &gt; Website traffic value<\/em> and entering 5,000 in the \u201cFrom\u201d field. Use Ikigai<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ikigai (pronounced \u201cee-key-guy\u201d) is a Japanese concept I learned about as a teenager that combines the terms <em>iki<\/em> (meaning \u201calive\u201d or \u201clife\u201d) and <em>gai<\/em> (meaning \u201cbenefit\u201d or \u201cworth\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the Japanese method of finding and leading a fulfilling life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how can you use Ikigai to find a business niche?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It involves answering a series of questions to determine where what you love, what you\u2019re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for all overlap\u2014this is your Ikigai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-3.png\" alt=\"Venn diagram of the Ikigai concept\" class=\"wp-image-164521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-3.png 600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-3-425x425.png 425w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-3-120x120.png 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/18\/Ikigai-EN.svg\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I won\u2019t get too philosophical here, but answering these questions really helped me choose my first business niche (and helped with life in general). They&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do you love doing in your free&nbsp;time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are you really good&nbsp;at?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are you interested in learning about?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do other people tell you you\u2019re good&nbsp;at?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What have you been paid to&nbsp;do?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do people always ask you for help&nbsp;with?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for the overlaps in your answers. Maybe you\u2019re really good at gardening, love doing it, and have been paid to be a marketer. A gardening website could be a perfect fit for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I obviously have no idea what your answers are to these questions. Look for a competitor that is specifically about your niche\u2014not a generic, broad competitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in these results, I would skip giant sites like Forbes and WSJ and, instead, look at Sleep Foundation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1181\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image5-3.png\" alt=\"Google SERP for &quot;best bed frames&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-164523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image5-3.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image5-3-680x402.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image5-3-768x454.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image5-3-1536x907.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at Similarweb, we can see it receives over 6.7 million monthly site visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1402\" height=\"610\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image11-2.png\" alt=\"Monthly site visits to sleepfoundation.org, via Similarweb\" class=\"wp-image-164524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image11-2.png 1402w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image11-2-680x296.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image11-2-768x334.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1402px) 100vw, 1402px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you scroll down, you can see that the majority of this traffic comes from organic search:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1011\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-4.png\" alt=\"Traffic sources for sleepfoundation.org, via Similarweb\" class=\"wp-image-164526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-4.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-4-680x344.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-4-768x388.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-4-1536x777.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat this process for several competitors to get an idea of where the majority of traffic comes from in your&nbsp;niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find that many of your competitors are using <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-is-seo\/\">search engine optimization<\/a> to get traffic from Google, the next step is to see how difficult it may be to rank your own site for similar keywords.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that, plug one of your competitor\u2019s sites into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. Head to the <strong>Organic keywords<\/strong> tab and browse the keywords it ranks for, paying special attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/keyword-difficulty\">Keyword Difficulty (KD)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1796\" height=\"1550\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image12-2.png\" alt=\"Organic keywords report in Ahrefs' Site Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-164528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image12-2.png 1796w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image12-2-492x425.png 492w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image12-2-768x663.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image12-2-1536x1326.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1796px) 100vw, 1796px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find that the majority of keywords in this report have a KD greater than 30, that means it will be difficult for you to compete as a new site. That\u2019s not to say you <em>can\u2019t<\/em> compete\u2014just know that it may not be&nbsp;easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this instance, the majority of the keywords Sleep Foundation ranks for are above 30 and, thus, may indicate a tough niche to compete in. However, I suggest you do further <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a> before ruling a competitive niche out entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we have one more thing to check: ad spend in Google Search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To see your competitors\u2019 ad spend, go to the \u201cOverview 2.0\u201d<strong> <\/strong>page in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. Sleep Foundation didn\u2019t have any data here, so let\u2019s look at another competitor: Sleepopolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image6-3.png\" alt=\"Paid search estimations for Sleepopolis in Ahrefs' Site Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-164530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image6-3.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image6-3-680x201.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image6-3-768x227.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image6-3-1536x453.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see that it purchased 55 ads targeting 63 keywords, which cost ~USD 17K and got it 3.9K monthly visitors. Keep in mind that these numbers are estimates and may not be 100% accurate\u2014however, they can still be used for a rough idea of your competitors\u2019 ad&nbsp;spend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check several sites to get a more accurate picture of average ad spend among competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look at seasonality and trendiness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve done the research and found a niche still worth pursuing, there are a few more things I recommend you check before buying a domain name and starting your new business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should figure out if the niche you chose is seasonal (i.e., snowboarding) or if it\u2019s a passing trend (i.e., fidget spinners).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seasonality and trendiness are easy to check. Just plug one of the niche\u2019s main keywords into Google Trends to see if searches decrease at certain times of the year and if your niche is a dying or dead&nbsp;trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we look at \u201cfidget spinner\u201d and set the filter to \u201c2004\u2013present,\u201d we can see it\u2019s obviously a dead trend that peaked in&nbsp;2017:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1087\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-1.png\" alt=\"Google Trends results for &quot;fidget spinner&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-164533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-1.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-1-680x370.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-1-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-1-1536x835.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at \u201csnowboarding,\u201d we can see that its searches peak every December, signaling seasonality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"826\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2.png\" alt=\"Google Trends results for &quot;snowboarding&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-164532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2-680x281.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2-768x317.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2-1536x635.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because a niche is seasonal or trendy doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s a bad niche. But if you\u2019re torn between a few, how do you actually pick?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three things to think about when selecting your&nbsp;niche:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Passion vs. profit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you choose a niche that is exciting to you, or should you focus on one that has the highest profit potential?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I am not \u201cmoney motivated.\u201d I\u2019ve been fortunate to make quite a bit of money in my career, but I didn\u2019t choose my business niches based on how much money I could&nbsp;make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I did choose my niches based on things I was excited and curious about. After all, if I\u2019m not excited about something, it\u2019s hard to get myself to do&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you fine with boring, uninteresting work if the money is right? Or do you prefer to wake up excited to work and figure out how to make more money in a potentially less lucrative niche?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The choice is ultimately up to&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Low vs. high competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many business experts will tell you to avoid high-competition niches unless you have a lot of capital and\/or expertise in that market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While generally I agree with this, I do believe that there is always space for exceptional businesses in every niche\u2014even those that are highly saturated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High competition typically also means high potential for profits. And if you\u2019re a fiercely competitive and motivated person, you can compete well in virtually any&nbsp;niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, a low-competition niche will be easier to win in\u2014though at the potential cost of not earning as much money. You need to figure out whether you\u2019re willing to put in the work for a competitive niche, or if you want something a little easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Micro vs.&nbsp;broad<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to the last argument, many experts will say it\u2019s better to go after smaller niches to avoid competition and become more specialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, however, there\u2019s a trade-off here; smaller niches often require much more creativity to earn the same money you could make in a larger niche. Of course, that also depends on the niche\u2014some small niches have people with deep pockets and can be really lucrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like every other argument here, it really depends on the niche. My advice would be to choose the niche that feels right to you (and looks good on&nbsp;paper).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing a niche for your online business is a matter of some basic research and thoughtful considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, you have to decide for yourself if a niche is worth pursuing and whether you\u2019ll go purely after profits or if you prefer something that\u2019s actually interesting to&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for me, I\u2019ll choose an exciting niche over a boring but profitable one every&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions?
