They\u2019re hanging out on TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn\u2014y\u2019know, the places with algorithms designed to surface content they actually care&nbsp;about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want potential customers to actually find and consume your content, you need to distribute it in those places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t wait for people to come to you. You can publish or distribute content here whenever you like. You don\u2019t have to pay or ask permission (unless only your boss has the logins!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blog<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twitter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TikTok<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YouTube<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email list<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earned channels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Earned channels are those owned by others where you have to earn coverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some channels, like Reddit, this is as straightforward as submitting useful content and hoping a moderator approves it. For others, like if you want to write a post for the Ahrefs Blog, the \u201cgatekeeper\u201d can be a bit more\u2026 <em>stringent<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Podcasts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reddit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Facebook groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blogs\u2019 comments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paid channels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paid channels are those where you have to pay to distribute your content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google Ads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twitter Ads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outbrain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sponsorships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">What about organic search? What type of channel is&nbsp;that?<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>Good question. I\u2019d say it falls into two groups: earned and owned. How do you distribute that content to as many people as possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are essentially two content distribution strategies you can&nbsp;use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u201cpull\u201d strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you use other channels to drive traffic to content on an owned channel. Research your target audience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to distribute content effectively unless you first know the answers to these questions about your target audience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where do they hang out and consume content online?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who do they trust in your industry?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What types of content do they like to consume?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at a few ways you can answer these questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">a) Go with your&nbsp;gut<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be real: If you work in a marketing leadership position, you should probably already have some idea how to answer these questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, many folks on our marketing team were Ahrefs customers before joining the company. It\u2019s also super quick and easy to do. Just create a quick survey with multiple-choice answers to the questions above and send it over to your existing audience (e.g., subscribers).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">c) Research popular blogs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most industries have a few popular blogs, and these are good seeds for audience research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick way to find popular blogs in your industry:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter a few broad topics related to your niche separated by the \u201cOR\u201d operator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select \u201cIn title\u201d from the dropdown and run the search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filter for websites with traffic &lt;500K to exclude big brands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <strong>Websites<\/strong> tab<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say we sell BBQs and want to create and distribute content about that. If we search for \u201cbbq OR grill,\u201d we see websites in that niche sorted by their estimated monthly organic traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" plenty of traffic, we can see right away that our audience is searching for answers on Google and consuming blog&nbsp;posts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, we can also check the \u201cAuthors\u201d tab to uncover prolific authors in the niche that our audience may like and&nbsp;trust:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1088\" height=\"1058\" class=\"wp-image-162516\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image33.png\" alt=\"Popular authors in Ahrefs' Content Explorer\n\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image33.png 1088w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image33-437x425.png 437w, deeper to figure out where these bloggers are publishing and distributing content, and where they hang out online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s take Susie Bulloch, founder of heygrillhey.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we click through to her Twitter profile from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a>, we can see that she only has a few thousand followers and hasn\u2019t tweeted since May&nbsp;2022:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1192\" height=\"704\" class=\"wp-image-162518\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3.png\" alt=\"Susie Bulloch, founder of a popular grilling blog, clearly doesn't care much for distributing content to Twitter\n\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3.png 1192w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3-680x402.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3-768x454.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1192px) 100vw, 1192px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that she runs one of the biggest sites in the niche with an estimated 700K monthly search visits (according to Ahrefs), this is clearly not where she hangs out online or distributes content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we search Google, we see that she\u2019s much more active on Instagram:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1338\" height=\"308\" class=\"wp-image-162525\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image23-1.png\" alt=\"She cares more about distributing content on YouTube\n\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image23-1.png 1338w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image23-1-680x157.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image23-1-768x177.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1338px) 100vw, 1338px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I also spotted that she runs a private community (\u201cThe Grill Squad\u201d) on Facebook (which she sells access to via her website)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" They\u2019re mostly distributing content to visual platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Distribute your content using the \u201cpull\u201d strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Publishing content in any format takes a lot of time and effort, so it makes sense to drive as many eyeballs as possible there. I then asked the owners of SEO Facebook groups whether I could post it in their groups.
