It\u2019s really just about finding and prioritizing topics that make sense for your strategy, then scheduling and assigning them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go through the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Make sure you have a clear content strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever tried to cook something new without a recipe? Then you\u2019ll know that although it can be fun, results vary. The same happens if you try to create a content plan without a content strategy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what is a content strategy, anyway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In simple terms, it\u2019s a document explaining <em>why<\/em> you\u2019re creating content, <em>who<\/em> it\u2019s for, <em>what<\/em> type of content you\u2019ll create, and <em>where<\/em> you\u2019ll publish it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example for Ahrefs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-243\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-243 tablepress-responsive tablepress-ahrefs-width-full\">\n<tbody class=\"row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Why am I creating content?<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">To influence our audience\u2019s buying decisions by showcasing how Ahrefs helps to solve their problems.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Who am I creating content for?<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">People who want to drive more search traffic to their websites (business owners, affiliate marketers, e-commerce stores, etc.).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Where will I publish content?<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">The Ahrefs Blog (because my audience uses Google to search for information).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>What type of content will I create?<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Blog posts.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-243 from cache -->\n\n\n\n<p>Note how simple this is. There are no \u201cSMART\u201d goals or other jargon. They might have come from&nbsp;ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that reason, I recommend doing Google keyword research instead\u2014even if you\u2019re creating content for TikTok or YouTube. This is because people tend to search for similar things across platforms, and keyword tools for Google have the most accurate data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to get started:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the domain of a popular industry blog<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <strong>Top pages<\/strong> report<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, you\u2019ll see which posts get the most traffic on popular industry blogs and the keywords driving the most traffic to&nbsp;them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1784\" height=\"1092\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image12-1.png\" alt=\"The most popular pages by estimated search traffic on a popular grilling blog, via Ahrefs' Site Explorer\n\" class=\"wp-image-162263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image12-1.png 1784w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image12-1-680x416.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image12-1-768x470.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image12-1-1536x940.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1784px) 100vw, 1784px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the top post on Hey Grill, Hey is about Texas-style smoked brisket. As you can tell from the URL and \u201cTop Keyword\u201d column, it gets most of its 60,000+ estimated monthly visits from the keyword \u201csmoked brisket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice trends here, you can use them as \u201cseed\u201d keywords in a keyword research tool to find more similar topics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter a common \u201cseed\u201d keyword<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the<strong> Matching terms<\/strong> report<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1062\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image13.png\" alt=\"How to find keyword ideas, via Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\n\" class=\"wp-image-162264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image13.png 1062w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image13-418x425.png 418w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image13-768x781.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1062px) 100vw, 1062px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, many of the top posts on Hey Grill, Hey are \u201csmoked\u201d recipes. If we use \u201csmoked\u201d as our \u201cseed\u201d keyword as we did above, we see thousands of other popular topics that we could create content about.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Identify the best topics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best topics are those with the highest traffic and business potential. If you\u2019re creating content to rank in Google search, there are a couple of other metrics you\u2019ll want to take into account too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traffic potential<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic potential is how much traffic a topic can potentially attract for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re creating content for SEO, you can use the Traffic Potential (TP) metric in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> for this. However, Traffic Potential tends to be a more reliable estimate of how much traffic you\u2019ll get by ranking #1.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Search intent<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re creating content for Google search, you need to make sure searchers are actually looking for the kind of content you want to create. You can use the current top-ranking results as a proxy for&nbsp;this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, people searching for \u201csmoked brisket\u201d clearly want recipes and how-tos because that\u2019s what all the top results are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1406\" height=\"912\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3.jpg\" alt=\"People are looking for recipes and how-tos when searching for &quot;smoked brisket&quot;\n\" class=\"wp-image-162268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3.jpg 1406w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3-655x425.jpg 655w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image5-3-768x498.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1406px) 100vw, 1406px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But people searching for \u201cwagyu brisket\u201d are clearly looking to buy meat because all of the top results are from e-commerce pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1394\" height=\"794\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image6-3.jpg\" alt=\"People are looking to buy meat when searching for &quot;wagyu brisket&quot;\n\" class=\"wp-image-162270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image6-3.jpg 1394w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image6-3-680x387.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image6-3-768x437.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1394px) 100vw, 1394px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your content strategy is to create blog posts for organic search, \u201csmoked brisket\u201d may be a good keyword to target with content. \u201cWagyu brisket\u201d likely won\u2019t&nbsp;be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business potential<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Business potential is how easy it is to \u201csell\u201d your product or service in the content. If it\u2019s easy to pitch your business, the score is high. People are ready to buy; you just need to recommend the best solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you sell BBQs, on the other hand, that same topic has a low business potential score because searchers probably already have their equipment. There\u2019s no useful way to pitch your product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crucial point here is that business potential is relative. It depends on <em>your<\/em> business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keyword difficulty<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Keyword difficulty is a measure of how hard it would be to rank for a&nbsp;topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many factors can affect this, like backlinks, content quality, and website authority, so it can be tricky to figure out. However, the Keyword Difficulty (KD) score in Ahrefs is a good place to start. Prioritize topics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every good content plan needs prioritization because it\u2019s impossible to write every piece of content at once. Consider clustering and prioritizing them<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>If you spot similar topics with potential while reviewing ideas, it may make sense to group them and work on them all together. Just pick some topics from your spreadsheet and add them to your <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-project-management\/\">project management<\/a> software or a Google Calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Assign topics to writers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s finally time to set your plan into action and assign content to creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is super easy to do. Just assign the topics in your calendar, starting with those with the closest due dates. (There\u2019s not much point in assigning topics months in advance.
