They are usually hired to write long-form blog articles, ebooks, or email newsletters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional copywriters write short, snappy content that\u2019s just a few hundred words. They are usually hired to write short-form advertorials or product descriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, content writers can write short-form content like social media posts and copywriters can write long-form content like landing pages. These are generalities, not hard&nbsp;rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional content writers are often hired to create blog content with the goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-rank-higher-on-google\/\">ranking high on Google<\/a>. They are often well versed in on-page SEO and organic social media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional copywriters are often hired to write ads, product pages, and landing pages. They know how to use powerful wording to get the reader to take action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, however, these are generalities. By:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowing your audience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being concise in your wording.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing in a conversational tone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Editing, editing, and editing some&nbsp;more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mastering transitions and emotional wording.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote a whole <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/writing-tips\/\">guide to becoming a better writer<\/a>, which I recommend you read to learn&nbsp;more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Great content solves a&nbsp;need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I mentioned you must know your audience to write great content; part of that means knowing the problems they have and how your product or service solves those problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t mean the superficial problem, though\u2014people don\u2019t often buy a T-shirt to stay warm. They buy a T-shirt to support their favorite group, show off their interests, find like-minded people, or feel more attractive and confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must uncover the underlying problem your target market has. While there\u2019s a lot to learn about SEO writing, it boils down&nbsp;to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doing <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a> to determine the best target keyword for a&nbsp;page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent\/\">search intent<\/a> for that keyword, i.e., what is the searcher truly looking for?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding and implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/on-page-seo\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/on-page-seo\/\">on-page SEO<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, this page targets the keyword \u201ccopywriting vs content writing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We found this keyword through keyword research. Say you hire a person to write copy. The copy they wrote then immediately increases your conversion rate by 2% and puts an extra thousand dollars in your bank account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d pay them more, wouldn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare that to hiring a content writer who writes a blog article for you, which you aren\u2019t sure whether or not the article did or will make you money back. It\u2019s easy to see why copywriters make more money than content writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, I have never advertised myself as a \u201ccopywriter.\u201d I also make far more than a typical copywriter for writing content. That\u2019s because I understand SEO and marketing as well, and the articles I write for my clients typically make their way to the top of Google\u2019s search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, I understand both copywriting and content writing, which allows me to charge more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that my first-ever freelance writing gig made me a measly $5 for a nearly 3,000-word article. If you want someone to write blog posts, email newsletters, or ebooks, hire a content writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But honestly, the words \u201ccopywriter\u201d and \u201ccontent writer\u201d are just different titles for what is basically the same job\u2014putting words on a screen that inform, entertain, and ultimately get people to find and want to buy from your&nbsp;brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My suggestion is to look for a copywriter with SEO skills.
