Hire industry experts to answer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalists have a reputation to uphold, so they\u2019re rarely interested in what a regular Joe has to say. They want expert insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we hire veterinarians to respond to HARO requests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think we\u2019d have half as much success with this tactic if we didn\u2019t do&nbsp;this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few of my favorite ways to find industry experts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Publish a \u201chiring\u201d page for experts <\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>We get over 10 emails a week from <a href=\"https:\/\/petkeen.com\/online-veterinarian-writing-editing-jobs\/\">ours<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask existing team members for referrals <\/strong>\u2013 This works well because industry experts often know other experts within their fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Post on job boards <\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/problogger.com\/jobs\/\">ProBlogger<\/a> has worked quite well for us, as has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/\">UpWork<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 2. Publish author pages for your experts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your expert may have authority in the industry. Guest blogging and case studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/guest-blogging\">Guest blogging<\/a> is where you write a one-off post for another website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a tactic that has been around for decades, but it still works very well if done correctly\u2014and that means writing a good&nbsp;pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a successful pitch I sent to Flippa (DR&nbsp;82):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hi [name],<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nice to e-meet you.&nbsp;\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend [FriendsName] who has been writing for Flippa recommended that I get in touch with&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m Simon Treulle, and I have been operating online content sites since 2014, and now I run a portfolio of sites that has a total readership of around 48 million users per&nbsp;year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our biggest sites are Hepper.com (an eCommerce company making and selling cat furniture), and PetKeen.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a cool idea for something that I would love to write, and that I think would be really interesting for your audience. An article about launching a blog (with Display Ads and Affiliate partnerships) on an eCommerce store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve seen a lot of success by doing this, and initially we had a lot of resistance towards rolling out display ads on our eCommerce site\u2019s blog. Because conventional wisdom says that \u2018ads are annoying, and ruin your brand&nbsp;value.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having rolled out this blog has allowed us to generate a solid stream of cashflow that we can reinvest into product development. This has been especially helpful since we acquired Hepper in 2021: Right in the middle of the eCommerce supply chain crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This made it hard to get our products manufactured and shipped to our customers. It also took time to build the relationships with manufacturers, and other partners, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be exciting to write about our learnings, wins, and reflections on this topic. Pitch websites you already have relationships with<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/amyanderson\/2013\/06\/28\/people-do-business-with-people-they-like\/?sh=36e62840309f\">People tend to do business with those they already know<\/a>, so a good starting point is to pitch posts to those you have existing relationships with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not just talking about people or companies you have deep relationships with either. This isn\u2019t always necessary. Believe it or not, just being a customer is often enough to get their attention and interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few questions I recommend asking yourself to find places to&nbsp;pitch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Which software and apps do you use?<\/strong> These companies are often interested in hearing about how their software is helping your business succeed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Which online publications do you love?<\/strong> This will help you personalize your&nbsp;pitch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who do you know in the industry?<\/strong> Maybe they can introduce you to the editor at their company?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll see in my pitch to Flippa that I highlighted how I had been a Flippa user for many years and that I was looking to acquire a site through it. This likely helped make it clear to the editor of Flippa an existing relationship between us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 2. Pitch medium to high DR&nbsp;sites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You should spend your time where you can make the biggest impact and get in front of most readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you should be picky about who you pitch. We use Ahrefs\u2019 Domain Rating (DR) as a filter, as it\u2019s an indicator of a site\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find that pitching to companies that have a DR higher than 50 is the sweet&nbsp;spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"editor-note\"><div class=\"editor-title\">Editor\u2019s Note<\/div><div class=\"editor-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d recommend looking at traffic estimates over DR here. It\u2019s a better judge of the number of eyeballs a site is getting than DR. This often happens in the form of top 10 lists, reviews, and recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of this is our other site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepper.com\/\">hepper.com<\/a>, which sells modern cat furniture products. These products are loved by pet families and received coverage from big media sites such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/05\/well\/family\/feline-food-issues-whisker-fatigue-may-be-to-blame.html\">NYTimes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/style\/pets\/la-hm-pet-furniture-20150618-htmlstory.html\">Latimes<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/summeranne\/50-perfect-presents-for-pampered-pets\">BuzzFeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Tip<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t expect a lot of media coverage if you\u2019re just selling a generic product that doesn\u2019t excite people. Instead, ask yourself: What product or service can I create that people will rave&nbsp;about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 3. It\u2019s better to focus on a handful of link building tactics than to try to do them&nbsp;all<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s face it: There are probably hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/link-building\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">link building methods<\/a> to choose from. Now imagine trying to master all of them. You\u2019d get overwhelmed quickly and look like&nbsp;this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image4.gif\" alt=\"How it feels trying to master too many link building tactics\n\" class=\"wp-image-157683\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve come to realize that it\u2019s best to laser-focus on three to five \u201cgolden\u201d link building methods than try to do them&nbsp;all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because if you try to use 100 link building methods at the same time, you\u2019ll probably achieve mediocre results. But if you specialize in a small number of \u201cgolden\u201d methods, you\u2019ll likely become a master and get much better results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s impossible to say what link building methods work best for you. Some methods work well in certain industries, while others don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find your \u201cgolden\u201d link building methods, I recommend trying as many <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/link-building\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">proven-to-work methods<\/a> as possible and then evaluating what worked best for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing your traffic and attracting links in a competitive industry takes a lot of time, elbow grease, and persistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can seem intimidating at first. But the process often gets easier after you get your first couple of wins and have found the link building methods that work best for your&nbsp;site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve achieved that early momentum, it\u2019s all about continuing to put in the work, scaling up your operations by hiring team members, and documenting processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember: It\u2019s meant to be hard.
