Let\u2019s look at a few ways to do&nbsp;this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find competitors\u2019 directory links<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Directory links are far from the most powerful links, but they\u2019re easy to replicate. Don\u2019t be tempted to pay these for SEO purposes, as they won\u2019t be worth it. It just asks if they\u2019re familiar with the sender\u2019s tool. This is intentional. It\u2019s easier to ask for inclusion after you win folks&nbsp;over.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find competitors\u2019 links from interviews and podcasts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Interview and podcast links are more common in some industries than others, so you may not find any among your competitors. Replicating them is as simple as reaching out and pitching the same websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding and copying link building tactics that work for competitors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your competitors have lots of backlinks from directories, podcasts, interviews, or guest posts, these link building tactics are clearly working for them. So don\u2019t limit yourself to replicating only the exact links they got. Pursue other links from these tactics too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tutorials to&nbsp;help:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l2nwOWC3n9Q\">How to Find Guest Posting Opportunities on Active Websites<\/a> [Video]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a opportunities is pretty much the same thing as finding opportunities to get links from directories.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are two more commonly used tactics worth checking for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check for links from journalist requests<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bloggers and journalists often use services like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpareporter.com\/\">Help A Reporter Out (HARO)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/muckrack.com\/\">MuckRack<\/a> to source quotes for upcoming stories\u2014and they usually link to their sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, here\u2019s someone from \u201cMartha Stewart Living\u201d asking for a quote about how plumbing leaks occur in the&nbsp;home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"834\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image5-11.png\" alt=\"Example It needs to be something you can create similar content about.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check the quality of the page\u2019s backlinks<\/strong> \u2013 To do this, run a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/backlink-audit\/\">backlink audit <\/a>in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. For that reason, there\u2019s an opportunity here to pitch a link swap to linkers (same as with broken link building).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do you find your competitors\u2019 irrelevant 301 redirects in the first&nbsp;place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter a competitor\u2019s domain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the<strong> Best by links<\/strong> report<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a \u201c3XX redirect\u201d HTTP code filter<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1598\" height=\"1020\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image30-3.png\" alt=\"Filtering for 301 redirects with backlinks in Ahrefs' Site Explorer\n\" class=\"wp-image-155589\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image30-3.png 1598w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image30-3-666x425.png 666w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image30-3-260x166.png 260w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image30-3-768x490.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image30-3-1536x980.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1598px) 100vw, 1598px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s then just a case of double-checking what the page used to be in the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/web\/\">Wayback Machine<\/a>, auditing the quality of the page\u2019s links, creating a relevant replacement, and suggesting it to linkers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Run a competitor link analysis<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of your competitors\u2019 \u201clootable\u201d links won\u2019t fall neatly into the box of a known link building tactic. The process of finding them is quite nuanced and takes some experience, but you\u2019ll often find unique pitches this&nbsp;way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, say we wanted to build links to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-ranking-factors\/\">our list of Google ranking factors<\/a>. If we check the top-ranking results for this keyword in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>, we see that many of them have hundreds of (potentially \u201clootable\u201d) backlinks from hundreds of domains:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1732\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image24-6.png\" alt=\"Referring domains pointing to the top-ranking pages for &quot;google ranking factors&quot;\n\" class=\"wp-image-155590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image24-6.png 1732w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image24-6-680x283.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image24-6-768x319.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image24-6-1536x639.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1732px) 100vw, 1732px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When I plugged one of those competing URLs into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a> and checked the <strong>Backlinks<\/strong> report, alarm bells started to ring when I saw the anchor and surrounding text for this&nbsp;link:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1650\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image11-8.png\" alt=\"One of the backlinks to a competing page about Google ranking factors\n\" class=\"wp-image-155591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image11-8.png 1650w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image11-8-680x181.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image11-8-768x204.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image11-8-1536x408.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1650px) 100vw, 1650px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It claims that bounce rate, dwell time, and repeat visits are ranking factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/dwell-time\">Not true<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that this link must be based on advice from the linked (competing) page, I decided to take a look myself. What I found was a page giving <em>lots<\/em> of dangerously bad advice:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1736\" height=\"1246\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image2-13.png\" alt=\"Many of the factors listed on the competing page are misleading\n\" class=\"wp-image-155592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image2-13.png 1736w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image2-13-592x425.png 592w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image2-13-768x551.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image2-13-1536x1102.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1736px) 100vw, 1736px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The highlighted ranking factors are not ranking factors at&nbsp;all.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not sure how much linkers would care, but I think there\u2019s an opportunity here to reach out to all worthwhile prospects, explain that they\u2019re linking to an inaccurate post, and suggest linking to our list of ranking factors instead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if only a fraction of them care, we win a few links while combating misinformation. It\u2019s a win-win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding your competitors\u2019 backlinks is easy. Getting the same ones to your site is less&nbsp;easy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean it isn\u2019t possible. Start by replicating the easy ones, then find and copy the link building tactics that work for them, and finally take any links they no longer deserve for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Got questions?
