Find relevant content with lots of backlinks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three methods to find relevant pages with plenty of&nbsp;links:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Site Explorer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter a popular site into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. You can use it to find mentions of any word or phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start by entering a broad topic related to your niche into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a>. Our KD score is calculated from a trimmed mean of referring domains (RDs) to the top 10 ranking pages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the top-ranking pages for keywords with high KD scores have lots of backlinks on average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, you\u2019ll want to go through the report to find potential topics you could build a better piece of content around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Make it better<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The core idea (or assumption) behind the Skyscraper Technique is that people want to see the <strong>best.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve found the content you want to beat, the next step is to make something <em>even better<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Brian, there are four aspects worth improving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Length<\/strong> \u2013 If the post has 25 tips, list&nbsp;more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Freshness<\/strong> \u2013 Update any outdated parts of the original article with new images, screenshots, information, stats, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design<\/strong> \u2013 Make it stand out with a custom design. You could even make it interactive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Depth<\/strong> \u2013 Don\u2019t just list things. Fill in the details and make them actionable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Reach out to the right people<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to successfully executing the Skyscraper Technique is <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/email-outreach\/\">email outreach<\/a>. In this case, there are 441 groups of&nbsp;links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not all of these links will make good prospects. So you\u2019ll likely need to add some filters to clean them up. Honestly speaking, the technique has been oversaturated. It\u2019s not a go-to for many SEOs, as it ranks #20 among the list of tactics. After all, the principles are the same behind (almost) any link building strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create great content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reach out to people and promote it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>But why do people think it\u2019s no longer effective? There are a few reasons why and knowing them will help you improve your chances of success with the Skyscraper Technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start&nbsp;with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Sending only Brian\u2019s email template<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Brian\u2019s original post, he suggested an email template for his readers to&nbsp;use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hey, I found your post: http:\/\/post1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&lt;generic compliment&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It links to this post: http:\/\/post2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I made something better: http:\/\/post3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please swap out the link for&nbsp;mine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, many SEOs decided to use this exact template word for&nbsp;word.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Link building doesn\u2019t exist in a vacuum. If everyone in your niche decides to send this exact template to every possible website, it\u2019ll burn out real fast. And that\u2019s exactly what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if a website owner sees this template, chances are they\u2019ll delete it right&nbsp;away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> Judging by my inbox, there are <em>still <\/em>people using this exact template. And, like everyone else, I delete the email immediately.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not saying this to disparage templated emails. If you\u2019re sending something at scale, templating is necessary. But move away from this template. Write your own, personalize it as much as possible, and follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/outreach\/\">outreach principles here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even better, ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat makes my content unique and link-worthy?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Not segmenting your prospects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People link for different reasons, so you shouldn\u2019t send everyone the same&nbsp;pitch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider dividing your list of prospects into segments according to the context in which they linked. Thinking bigger equals better<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone creates a list with 15 tools. The next person ups it to 30. Another \u201cskyscrapers\u201d it to 50, and the next increases it to&nbsp;100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is it a never-ending arms race, there\u2019s also no value for the reader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one wants to skim through 5,000 words or hundreds of items just to find what they need. <strong>Curation is where the value&nbsp;is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When considering the four aspects mentioned by Brian, don\u2019t improve things for the sake of improving them. Adding 25 mediocre tips to an existing list of 25 doesn\u2019t make it \u201cbetter.\u201d Likewise for changing the publish date or adding a few low-quality illustrations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: My colleague, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chris_at_b449\">Chris Haines<\/a>, recently published a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/niche-site-ideas\/\">post on the best niche site ideas<\/a>. Even though he only included 10, he has already outperformed the other \u201cskyscraper\u201d articles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1330\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image2.png\" alt=\"Our blog post ranking #3 for the query, &quot;niche site ideas,&quot; via Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-152674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image2.png 1330w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image2-673x425.png 673w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image2-768x485.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1330px) 100vw, 1330px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He differentiated himself through his knowledge and expertise. After all, Chris has 10 years of experience in&nbsp;SEO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when you\u2019re creating your article, always look at any improvement through the lens of&nbsp;value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you giving more value to the reader?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Not considering brand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ross Hudgens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siegemedia.com\/seo\/skyscraper-technique\">says<\/a>, \u201cBetter does not occur in a branding vacuum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the time, content isn\u2019t judged solely on its quality. It\u2019s also judged by who it comes from. We <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/email-outreach\/\">discovered this ourselves<\/a> too when we tried to build links to our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the time, people didn\u2019t read the article. They linked to us because of our brand and reputation\u2014they knew we were publishing great content consistently, and they had confidence that the article we were pitching was great&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, there are times where no matter how hard you \u201cskyscraper\u201d your content, people just won\u2019t link to it because they don\u2019t know who you&nbsp;are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having your own personal brand is important these days. But think about it: What is a \u201cstrong brand\u201d if not a consistent output of high-quality work that people enjoy? One lone skyscraper doesn\u2019t make a city; many of them together do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I\u2019m saying is this: Don\u2019t be discouraged if your \u201cskyscraper\u201d article gets no results. And don\u2019t be discouraged just because you don\u2019t have a brand right now\u2014you can work on that over&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep on <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-write-great-content\/\">making great content<\/a>\u2014skyscraper or not\u2014and results will come if you trust the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRome wasn\u2019t built in a day, but they were laying bricks every&nbsp;hour.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Skyscraper Technique is a legitimate link building tactic that works.
