Figure out where your best customers are<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start investing in ads or spending countless hours trying to grow a social media account, you should <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/market-research\/\">do some market research<\/a> to find valuable information about your market and audience\u2014one of the most important things being where your potential customers go for their information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can post all you want on Instagram. But if the people buying your products don\u2019t use Instagram, that time and effort will be wasted. I like to avoid wasted effort, so here are three ways to figure out where you should spend your&nbsp;time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Research your niche on forums<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Forums like Reddit are a gold mine of information for consumer research. There\u2019s a subreddit for nearly any topic imaginable, and people share all kinds of information there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say I want to start selling dirt bike parts. So that could be a potential <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-channels\/\">marketing channel<\/a> for me that I know my community is&nbsp;using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Check social media to see what kind of content does&nbsp;well<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, dirt biking is a pretty popular hobby, and there\u2019s going to be a lot of content about it on pretty much every major platform. I also noticed that TikTok has a lot of cool videos, and I could use the videos I\u2019m already making for YouTube to also create content on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use a tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/\">SparkToro<\/a> to save time in this process. But I saved the best for&nbsp;last\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Do some keyword research to see if you can rank on Google.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chances are, if you own an online business, you have customers searching for your products or services on Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a strong believer that every online business can benefit from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\">search engine optimization (SEO)<\/a>. It\u2019s my favorite marketing channel because it can bring highly targeted, relevant traffic on autopilot\u2026 without needing to constantly spend money on&nbsp;ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some niches are extremely competitive and, while you should still use SEO for the long term, it may not be your best focus in the short&nbsp;term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to figure that out is with some <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/keyword-research\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a>. Head over to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> and plug in some keywords that characterize your niche. Keep in mind, however, that this is just a rough metric\u2014a quantification like this can never be perfect, and you can still rank for keywords that have high KD with enough effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, you should know which social media platforms you want to be active on and if SEO may be something you really want to focus on. If your website looks outdated, loads slowly, or is difficult to navigate, you\u2019re going to miss out on sales no matter how good your marketing is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to make sure your customers have a first-class experience on your website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Ensure your website loads&nbsp;fast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your webpages should all load within two to three seconds at most (faster is always better). It\u2019s an important step in building a strong online business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How easy is it for users to navigate your website?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can they find the page they\u2019re looking for in three clicks or fewer from any page on your&nbsp;site?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the navigation menu make it easy for customers to flow through your funnel?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way I\u2019ve found to improve your site\u2019s structure is by creating a visual map of all the pages on your site and how they connect to one another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use a tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/xmind.app\/\">XMind<\/a> to do this. And that\u2019s just the marketing side\u2014only one of the many things we need to focus on to build and grow a successful business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid burnout and spreading yourself too thin, I highly recommend focusing on just two or three main marketing channels\u2014at least at the start. You can expand as you earn enough (and learn enough) to hire people for these&nbsp;roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of your options include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SEO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YouTube<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paid ads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Podcasting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My personal favorite marketing channel is&nbsp;SEO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, which channels you decide to pursue first should always be the channels you believe will be most effective for your business. If you find that the keywords are relatively easy to rank for and relevant to your products or services, I always recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/seo-basics\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-basics\/\">learning and implementing SEO<\/a>. The fact that SEO focuses on the whole customer journey makes it even more compelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, you should also have a rough idea of which social media platforms or podcasts your audience cares about and what kind of content you prefer to create. Pick one of those channels to use in conjunction with&nbsp;SEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/online-advertising\/\">paid advertising<\/a>. However, there is a greater risk of losing money on paid ads if you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing. I will only consider it if you already have some experience with it or if you can afford to hire someone else. Create high-quality, relevant content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of which marketing channels you decide to pursue, there is one thing you\u2019ll always need: quality content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s videos for TikTok or YouTube, photos for Instagram, blog posts for SEO, or another medium, your content needs to stand out among the sea of mediocre stuff online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what does it mean to \u201ccreate high-quality content\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means your content is some combination of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Engaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unique<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Informative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This means it\u2019s something that your audience cares about and is put together in a way that\u2019s interesting and captures their attention. The way to do this varies depending on your audience and the platform(s) you market on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, ranking on page one of Google requires your content to be accurate, well-formatted, unique, and authoritative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making quality content for TikTok, on the other hand, requires a different approach. I was able to grow one of my blogs to a half-million-per-year income on a single strong partnership simply because I took the time to connect with them and come up with ideas to promote one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partnerships can help you <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/link-building\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-building\/\">build links for SEO<\/a>, market your content, and even put more money in your pocket directly through <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/affiliate-marketing\/\">affiliate marketing<\/a>. It\u2019s not something you should ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do you find brand partners?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Easy. Think about all the products you already use and love and reach out to those brands. Send them an email. Or better yet, pick up the&nbsp;phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell them about your traffic and your capabilities to help promote them and their business. Offer to promote them to your email list and your social media following. Find websites with a decent number of social media followers but aren\u2019t so big that you\u2019ll likely be ignored. I find 10,000 to 100,000 followers to generally be a good, sweet spot of influence and&nbsp;size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find brands to partner with while doing your regular keyword research. At this point, you need to think like an executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Executives of giant companies like Apple or Microsoft have a literally infinite to-do list. There\u2019s always something they <em>could<\/em> be doing. And the same is true for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of frantically attacking your to-do list, you should be removing as many tasks as possible so you can focus only on the most important things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that, start with a brain dump. Write down every single task you need to do, including the tasks you do more than once. For example, my list can look like&nbsp;this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research keywords for&nbsp;SEO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outline, write, edit, and publish blog content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share the content on Facebook, on Twitter, and with my email&nbsp;list<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate with affiliate partners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send invoices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/outreach\/\">Send outreach emails<\/a> for link building<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outline, write, edit, and send <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/guest-blogging\/\">guest posts<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And a million other things&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s take a look at these tasks. Some of them are pretty simple and repetitive, such as uploading an article to my blog. Others require specific skills, such as keyword research and outlining an article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I\u2019m trying to figure out is which of my tasks need to be done by me, which can be automated using software or settings, which I can delegate to a freelancer or employee, and which simply don\u2019t need to be done at&nbsp;all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If I bill a client the same amount every month, I can set up automatic invoicing so I don\u2019t have to go in and create one every&nbsp;time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I can use a tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/wordable.io\/\">Wordable<\/a> to upload my articles from Google Docs to WordPress and completely cut out the task of uploading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of writing my own content, maybe I can hire a freelancer or content creation agency to do it for&nbsp;me.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I can hire a relatively cheap virtual assistant to post my articles on social media and email for&nbsp;me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By going through this exercise, you can save yourself a lot of time, energy, and money on tasks that you simply don\u2019t need to be doing yourself. Once you\u2019ve figured out how to make a profit online, you can cut what isn\u2019t working and double down on what&nbsp;is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this step, you\u2019ll want to focus more on removing yourself from as many tasks as possible to focus on overall business strategy rather than the day-to-day operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means hiring people to do all of the business tasks that don\u2019t directly require you to do them. Don\u2019t be discouraged if your results don\u2019t pay off right away. These skills that you\u2019re learning will continue to pay off for a lifetime to&nbsp;come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally started and \u201cfailed\u201d five different businesses before I found the one that I enjoyed enough to continue to work on. I put \u201cfailed\u201d in quotes because I don\u2019t view them as failures. Rather, I see them as learning experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I didn\u2019t \u201cfail\u201d five times, I wouldn\u2019t have succeeded in building the following three businesses that I\u2019ve run.
