Ahrefs\u2019 crawler is <a href=\"https:\/\/radar.cloudflare.com\/traffic\/verified-bots\">most active in the SEO industry<\/a>, and our backlink index <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/big-data\">contains over 35 trillion backlinks<\/a>. It\u2019s fantastic for content research, but it\u2019s also a great source of link prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say that you\u2019re looking for link prospects for a blog post titled \u201cbest routers for 2024.\u201d One source of potential link prospects would be people linking to similar posts that haven\u2019t been updated for years. Google<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The world\u2019s largest source of link prospects<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people don\u2019t think of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/\">Google<\/a> as a link-building tool, but it\u2019s one of the best ways to find link prospects. That\u2019s because it has the largest index of web pages on the planet and arguably the best search algorithm. So if you know how to use it effectively, you can easily find thousands of relevant link prospects for&nbsp;free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-177447-_x54o666nzta4\"><\/a>My favorite feature: Search operators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-advanced-search-operators\/\">Search operators<\/a> are commands that help you refine and filter search engine results. Some are unique to Google, but not all of them (as you can use the same or similar ones in Bing or <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a>). For example, here\u2019s how fast it finds my @ahrefs.com email address:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"824\" height=\"459\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/hunter-quickly-finding-joshuas-email-address.gif\" alt=\"Hunter quickly finding Joshua's email address\" class=\"wp-image-177452\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/find-email-address\/\">our testing<\/a>, it\u2019s not the most accurate email lookup service, but one feature more than makes up for this when it comes to link prospecting at scale: the Google Sheets add-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-177447-_cwbjbuunn35a\"><\/a>My favorite feature: Google Sheets add-on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say that you\u2019ve exported some link prospects from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-explorer\">Content Explorer<\/a> and imported them into Google Sheets. You can then use these prospects as your initial \u201chit\u201d list to test the viability of an outreach campaign. Fail to do so, and the deliverability of your entire campaign could be negatively affected by bounces. It\u2019s also a waste of time to personalize outreach emails only for them to bounce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neverbounce.com\/\">NeverBounce<\/a> makes email verification super easy. You can quickly set up a multi-step zap so that when you enter an email address into a Google sheet, it pings NeverBounce, verifies the email, and logs the verification status of that email in the very same Google sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"133\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/email-verification-status-logged-in-the-google-she.gif\" alt=\"Email verification status logged in the Google Sheet\" class=\"wp-image-177456\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Magic, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s one downside to this system: the expense. If you opt for Zapier\u2019s $19.99\/month plan, it\u2019ll cost you an extra $0.026 each time the zap&nbsp;runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, there\u2019s a solution: create a JSON importer in Google Apps Script to import data from NeverBounce webhooks. That may sound hard, but it\u2019s pretty simple. ChatGPT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>ChatGPT is\u2026 the tool we\u2019ve all heard of (and used) but wouldn\u2019t necessarily consider a link-building tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing: it\u2019s <em>incredible<\/em> at making things\u2014things that you can use as <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/link-bait\/\">linkbait<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I used it to create an income tax calculator in minutes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">You can use AI to make interactive content.<br><br>I don\u2019t know how to code, so I asked ChatGPT to make me an income tax calculator. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pmiKn9semd\">pic.twitter.com\/pmiKn9semd<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Joshua Hardwick (@JoshuaCHardwick) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoshuaCHardwick\/status\/1628755440019582976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 23,&nbsp;2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Look how many links the top-ranking pages for this keyword have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1548\" height=\"942\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/referring-domains-to-the-top-ranking-pages-for-in.jpg\" alt=\"Referring domains to the top-ranking pages for &quot;income tax calculator&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-177466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/referring-domains-to-the-top-ranking-pages-for-in.jpg 1548w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/referring-domains-to-the-top-ranking-pages-for-in-680x414.jpg 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/referring-domains-to-the-top-ranking-pages-for-in-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/referring-domains-to-the-top-ranking-pages-for-in-1536x935.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1548px) 100vw, 1548px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you could create a better calculator with ChatGPT, you could easily hit the thousands of websites linking to these inferior calculators with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/skyscraper-technique\/\">skyscraper<\/a> pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My fellow SEO Danny Richman also managed to use ChatGPT to create a useful tool:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/DannyRichman\/status\/1629085869133950978\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-177447-_5axb01gqjvah\"><\/a>My favorite feature: Coding scripts for&nbsp;APIs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the link-building tools I\u2019ve featured above have their own&nbsp;APIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can use the Hunter.io API to find email addresses, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.ahrefs.com\/docs\/api\/reference\/introduction\">Ahrefs API<\/a> to find link prospects. But, if you\u2019re anything like me, you probably have no idea how to actually code something to make use of these&nbsp;APIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where ChatGPT shines once&nbsp;again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s it writing Google Apps Script to pull email addresses from Hunter\u2019s API in seconds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1216\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/chatgpts-answer-when-prompted-to-create-a-functio.gif\" alt=\"ChatGPT's answer when prompted to create a function for Google App Scripts\" class=\"wp-image-177467\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the prompt used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Using Hunter.io\u2019s \u201cEmail Finder\u201d API, write a function called findEmail in Google Appscripts to return a person\u2019s email address. If no email exists, then return \u201cTHEY DON\u2019T WANT TO BE CONTACTED.\u201d I will provide the first name, last name, and domain name. BTW, my API key is [MUTED]. Go!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, all we have to do to pull someone\u2019s email is enter <code>=findEmail(cell with firstName, cell with lastName, cell with domain)<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is just one example of how ChatGPT can help with link building. You could easily go further and have it write a script to connect Ahrefs, Hunter, Neverbounce, and Buzzstream to automate nearly the entire link-building process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-177447-_xus91o65et87\"><\/a>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Link-building tools make life easier. So although it\u2019s possible to build links without them, I wouldn\u2019t recommend it because speed and efficiency matter.
