Use Excel or Google Sheets confidently<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a job in SEO, you don\u2019t need to be a Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets ninja. But knowing how to use formulas and features like VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, Power Query, CONCATENATE, text to columns, and pivot tables is definitely going to give you a head&nbsp;start.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will spend a lot of your SEO life in Excel or Google Sheets, so it pays to learn these skills early on\u2014if you aren\u2019t familiar with them already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more time you invest in learning Excel or Google Sheets, the more efficient you will be in your job. Familiarize yourself with platforms such as WordPress and try to rank for a few keywords on your&nbsp;site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have any prior work experience with another SEO company, then showing that you have taken the initiative to set up a website and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-rank-higher-on-google\/\">rank it for certain keywords<\/a> is a good way to show your passion and interest in&nbsp;SEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I initially got into SEO by managing my own websites, as well as helping my parents optimize their website to secure more orders for their e-commerce business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t always have to start off in an agency environment to gain experience (but it definitely helps!). So if you work in SEO, you need to be familiar with the rules of the&nbsp;game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carefully digest the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/advanced\/guidelines\/overview\">Google Search Essentials (formerly Webmaster Guidelines)<\/a> and work within the guidelines. Make your SEO resume stand out from the&nbsp;crowd<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I have looked at many resumes over the course of my career and, unfortunately, many of them don\u2019t always hit the&nbsp;mark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a candidate, you put a lot of effort into crafting the perfect resume, but hiring managers don\u2019t always have the time to read all the details. They may even be checking resumes during their lunch break in a matter of seconds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are my top tips to ensure your resume gets noticed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 1. Stick to the point and keep the most important details on the first&nbsp;page<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of your resume, make sure that you keep it to the point (no more than two pages). Also, ensure it is professionally presented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t waste any of the hiring manager\u2019s time and try to avoid resume cliches such as \u201chighly motivated individual, ready to hit the ground running.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop. This is meaningless nonsense.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write about what makes you different from all the other applicants. If you don\u2019t have any work experience just yet, write about how you optimized your website for its key&nbsp;terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 2. Use a design tool to create a professional-looking resume<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In days gone by, submitting your Microsoft Word resume would have been sufficient. But these days, tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/resumes\/templates\/\">Canva<\/a> can help you make a professional-looking resume that looks great. (Yes, it is totally free.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 3. Use a professional email address<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, I still see many <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoyDoreenBiira\/status\/1419697904302841858?s=20&amp;t=VYIn4aeqJCYU3yfj10pQlQ\">stories on social media<\/a> of hiring managers rejecting resumes due to their inappropriate email addresses. Apply for a job at an SEO agency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Why apply at an SEO agency and not in-house? Working at a small agency will give you the opportunity to gain a wide number of broad experiences very quickly, as you will typically be working with multiple clients in different industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply to SEO agencies in your location and also set up <a href=\"https:\/\/support.indeed.com\/hc\/en-gb\/articles\/204488890-How-to-create-a-Job-Alert\">indeed.com job alerts<\/a> to be notified about new jobs with your search terms so you have relevant opportunities sent to your&nbsp;inbox.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Recommendation<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">If you find an agency that you like the look of but it doesn\u2019t currently have any job openings on its website, you can use a tool such as <a href=\"https:\/\/distill.io\/\">Distill.io<\/a> to track any changes on its \u201cjobs\u201d landing page. So in the event that the agency does update the job listings on that page in the future, you will be the first to know either through an SMS notification or by&nbsp;email.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that the naming conventions of entry-level SEO positions can vary quite a&nbsp;lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On indeed.com, I found that the most relevant jobs were classed as \u201cSEO Intern\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/jobs?q=SEO%20Graduate&amp;from=sug&amp;vjk=d4fadc91fbac0211\">SEO Graduate<\/a>,\u201d so you will need to apply for these roles. (If you are outside of the U.S., naming conventions may differ.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some agencies also operate graduate schemes, where they operate placements for a number of months and then hire the best candidates following that. Details of these schemes will most likely be on the agencies\u2019 websites, but you can always contact them to check whether they operate a scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One last bit of advice is what constitutes a red flag in terms of job listings. Sometimes, you will see \u201cSEO\u201d in the job listing. But if you scroll down to the description of the role, you will see that responsibilities will include SEO, website management, etc. Basically everything.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1474\" height=\"820\" class=\"wp-image-148786\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/4-recommended-experience.png\" alt=\"Job listing with long list of experience requirements \" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/4-recommended-experience.png 1474w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/4-recommended-experience-680x378.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/4-recommended-experience-768x427.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1474px) 100vw, 1474px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These types of jobs will typically be extremely demanding, and the reality is that you will not be able to complete all of these responsibilities. So I\u2019ll avoid such jobs. For your first role, I\u2019ll try to look for job listings that focus specifically on the day-to-day tasks of SEO within the description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">THE SEO AGENCY CAREER PATH IN A NUTSHELL<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">You may be wondering what is the typical career path following the SEO intern\/graduate stage.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example of a typical progression at an agency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>SEO Intern\/Graduate &gt; SEO Executive &gt; SEO Manager &gt; SEO Director &gt; Head of&nbsp;SEO<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here is my suggested five-year career route to get to a senior role:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phase 1<\/strong> \u2013 Join a small agency. These days, however, many interviews are conducted via video conferencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My tips for interviews are as&nbsp;below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install popular video conferencing software<\/strong> \u2013 Download Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet. Then familiarize yourself with the interfaces beforehand. (Avoid the \u201cSorry, I was on mute\u201d scenario!) Run a test call to check your mic and webcam are working properly and that the room is well lit. If you are using wireless headphones, make sure they are suitably charged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Look professional<\/strong> \u2013 If you have two screens, remember to focus on the screen with the camera on it to avoid the look that you are not paying attention to what the hiring manager is saying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be prepared to accept tasks<\/strong> \u2013 As <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/google-algorithm-updates\">algorithms can change a lot in SEO<\/a>, many hiring managers are looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgu.edu\/blog\/experiential-learning-theory2006.html\">experiential learners<\/a> or, in simpler terms, people who can learn \u201cby doing.\u201d Be aware that some hiring managers may set tasks for&nbsp;you.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check the company\u2019s website<\/strong> \u2013 A quick glance at the company\u2019s website beforehand and checking out its latest social media posts can mean that you know exactly what its focus&nbsp;is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check SEO interview questions on Google<\/strong> \u2013 A bit of Googling beforehand around \u201cSEO interview questions\u201d will also help you understand the types of questions you are likely to get in the interview.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask questions<\/strong> \u2013 At the end of the interview, the hiring manager will ask if you have any more questions about the role. This is a good opportunity to ask how long it will take to hear back from them on whether you have been successful.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Every interview is different. But in terms of questions that you may be asked at the interview, there are typically three sections to a standard interview:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The introduction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cPlease talk me through your resume.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat would you do in terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/orchard-seo-strategy\/\">SEO strategy<\/a> for X website?\u201d (The website is typically the company\u2019s own site or a client\u2019s.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If a hiring manager is not sure about your knowledge of a certain aspect of SEO, then they may choose to ask questions around that&nbsp;topic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou mentioned that you optimized your website for site speed and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/core-web-vitals\/\">Core Web Vitals<\/a>. How exactly did you do that?\u201d (Typically, a hiring manager at an agency will be mostly concerned with their biggest client\u2019s market, e.g., maybe it is e-commerce.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t get discouraged if you get a rejection. This is just part of the normal process and will help you learn and develop your skills. Be aware it is likely that you will not get a job on your first interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Receiving an offer for a job can be an exciting moment. But it\u2019s important to remain calm and review all the details of the contract to ensure everything is correct and as discussed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend getting a family member or friend to check over the details if you are not used to reviewing contracts. The priorities to check are obviously your name, address, pay, place of work, and&nbsp;hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting a job in SEO can be highly competitive at first. But once you have some basic experience, you can rise through the ranks quickly.
