Or perhaps it\u2019s an opinion piece, a review, or you\u2019re simply covering the latest news.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever it is, you\u2019ll have to decide on a format.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, the format is screaming at you in plain sight. For example, if you\u2019re covering the topic \u201c<strong>how to<\/strong> make kefir at home,\u201d then it\u2019s probably going to be a <strong>how-to guide.<\/strong> Or if you\u2019re covering the topic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/blogging-tips\/\">blogging tips<\/a>,\u201d then it\u2019s probably going to be a <strong>list<\/strong> of&nbsp;tips.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But sometimes, it\u2019s not so straightforward. Is the topic \u201cbest productivity app\u201d a <em>list<\/em> of productivity apps, a <em>review<\/em> of a particular app, or an <em>opinion<\/em> article about the \u201cbest&nbsp;app\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is it can be any of the above. You\u2019re free to choose, and there\u2019s no one right answer. It focuses on one aspect, to the exclusion of others. If you\u2019re writing about \u201chow to make ramen at home,\u201d are you teaching your readers how&nbsp;to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make ramen <strong>fast<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make <strong>restaurant-quality<\/strong> ramen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make <strong>tonkotsu<\/strong> ramen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make <strong>vegan<\/strong> ramen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make <strong>Sapporo-style<\/strong> ramen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make <strong>Korean-style<\/strong> ramen (also known as ramyeon)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t possibly cover everything. So you need to choose. In fact, it\u2019s the angle that makes your article unique and interesting to readers, thereby making it stand&nbsp;out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use these questions to spark ideas for your own novel&nbsp;angle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Do you have personal experience or expertise?<\/strong> For example, if you\u2019ve managed successfully to infuse Singaporean flavors into ramen, then you can share your unique recipe with others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Can you interview experts?<\/strong> For example, you can interview a famous ramen chef on how newbies can potentially make restaurant-quality ramen at&nbsp;home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Can you crowdsource opinions and ideas?<\/strong> For example, you can poll members in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ramen\/\">r\/ramen<\/a> for their best at-home ramen recipes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Can you provide data or back your article with science?<\/strong> For example, you can potentially show readers how to create the \u201cperfect\u201d ramen by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18034748\/\">looking at the sensory relationship<\/a> between different acids and flavors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Can you be contrarian?<\/strong> Don\u2019t be contrarian for the sake of it. But if you have an opinion that\u2019s the opposite of everyone else\u2019s\u2014for example, how ramen is actually ultra healthy\u2014and you can back it up with evidence, it can be an attention-grabbing angle.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Recommendation<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\"> You can also look at the top-ranking pages on Google to get inspiration on what angle you should cover. Now, you need to figure out what you need to fill in, especially your subheadings (the H2s, H3s, H4s,&nbsp;etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ideas on how to find&nbsp;them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A. Use your expertise and experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is always to look inward. So it\u2019s a good idea to plan out (at least an idea) what you wish to say&nbsp;here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, don\u2019t fall into the trap of fleshing the entire thing out. They\u2019ll be able to give you feedback and point out flaws, inaccuracies, or points you\u2019ve missed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do this all the time. Every in-house writer has to send their outlines to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoshuaCHardwick\">Josh<\/a>, our head of content, for review.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your reviewer has given their feedback, you can look through it and incorporate their ideas into your outline.
