To get consistent organic traffic, you need to write about topics that people are searching for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why you should be targeting keywords with your blog&nbsp;posts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to target keywords with blog&nbsp;posts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You now know why it\u2019s important to target keywords. But how <em>exactly <\/em>do you \u201ctarget\u201d them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Find keyword ideas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The process begins by figuring out what keywords you want to target. We\u2019re not just looking for any random keywords\u2014we\u2019re looking for relevant keywords that people are searching for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The easiest way to do this is to use a keyword tool. Keyword tools are databases of words and phrases with their <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-metrics-to-track\/\">SEO metrics<\/a>. They show you a list of ideas based on the seed keyword idea you\u2019ve entered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use any keyword research tool. <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/free-keyword-research-tools\/\">Many of them are free<\/a>. However, most of the free keyword tools are limited in some way\u2014they may have a small database, have poor or no filters, lack SEO metrics, and&nbsp;more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That can make it difficult to make good decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we recommend that you use a \u201cprofessional\u201d keyword tool like Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>. Here\u2019s how to use the tool to find keyword ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enter one (or a few) relevant seed keywords, e.g., try plugging keywords like \u201ccoffee,\u201d \u201clatte,\u201d \u201cfrench press,\u201d etc., if you have a coffee blog<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <strong>Matching terms <\/strong>report<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch the tab to <strong>Questions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2-questions.png\" alt=\"Matching terms report results, via Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer\" class=\"wp-image-146142\" width=\"576\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2-questions.png 1280w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2-questions-488x425.png 488w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2-questions-768x668.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll see that there are over 300,000 potential keywords you could target. That\u2019s too many\u2014and most of them are probably too competitive. If you\u2019re just starting out, it\u2019s better to target keywords that&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High in <strong>Traffic Potential (TP)<\/strong> \u2013 TP is the estimated amount of search traffic you can potentially gain if you rank #1 for that topic. Identify search intent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s aim is to rank the most relevant content for any query. As such, it tries to understand <em>why <\/em>a searcher is Googling that keyword so it can serve the most relevant results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means, in order to rank high on Google, we need to identify and match search intent. Fortunately, we can do this by looking at the <strong>current <\/strong>top-ranking pages for your target query. Specifically, we want to identify the three Cs of search intent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content type<\/strong> \u2013 The dominant type of content on the SERPs\u2014in this case, blog&nbsp;posts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content format<\/strong> \u2013 The dominant content format, such as guides, listicles, reviews, and&nbsp;more.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content angle<\/strong> \u2013 The dominant angle. Examples include the current year, for beginners, simple and easy, and&nbsp;more.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s take a look at the top-ranking pages for the keyword \u201chow to clean coffee maker\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1544\" height=\"1308\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-serp-overview-clean-coffee-maker.png\" alt=\"SERP overview for &quot;how to clean coffee maker&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-146145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-serp-overview-clean-coffee-maker.png 1544w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-serp-overview-clean-coffee-maker-502x425.png 502w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-serp-overview-clean-coffee-maker-768x651.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/5-serp-overview-clean-coffee-maker-1536x1301.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1544px) 100vw, 1544px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content type<\/strong> \u2013 They\u2019re all blog&nbsp;posts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content format<\/strong> \u2013 Most of them are how-to guides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content angle<\/strong> \u2013 It seems like a few of them mentioned \u201cwith vinegar.\u201d It could be a potential angle you might want to go&nbsp;for.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re targeting this keyword, for example, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll have to create a how-to guide on cleaning a coffee maker (perhaps with vinegar!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommended reading:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent\/\"><em>What Is Search Intent? A Complete Guide for Beginners<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Create the content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Targeting keywords with blog posts is no longer about stuffing as many keywords as possible. That\u2019s an ancient tactic that no longer works. If you want to rank high on Google, you need to show Google that your <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/relevant-content\/\">content is relevant<\/a> and deserves to be on the first&nbsp;page.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By matching search intent, you\u2019ve already cleared the first hurdle. But how else can you show Google your content deserves to be&nbsp;there?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A. Cover important subtopics<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are subtopics that almost all the top-ranking pages cover, then it\u2019s a sign that searchers are looking for&nbsp;them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find these subtopics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paste a few top-ranking URLs for your main topic into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-gap\">Content Gap&nbsp;tool<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave the bottom section blank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hit <strong>Show keywords<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the <strong>Intersection<\/strong> filter to <strong>3<\/strong> and <strong>4 targets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1804\" height=\"1418\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/6-content-gap-1-1.png\" alt=\"Content Gap report results\" class=\"wp-image-146146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/6-content-gap-1-1.png 1804w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/6-content-gap-1-1-541x425.png 541w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/6-content-gap-1-1-768x604.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/6-content-gap-1-1-1536x1207.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1804px) 100vw, 1804px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see that the top-ranking pages cover topics like&nbsp;these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is earned media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned media examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Owned media examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paid media examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paid media vs earned media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Owned media vs earned media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we\u2019re covering this topic (\u201cearned media\u201d), it is likely we\u2019ll have to cover these subtopics too. Even better: You can use them as potential H2s to organize your content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B. Invest in a good reader experience<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You should make sure your content is easy to read. After all, the purpose of your blog post is not just to rank but also to get the reader to consume your content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these tips to create an effortless reading experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>descriptive subheadings (H2\u2013H6)<\/strong> for hierarchy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>bullets<\/strong> to help with skimming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use<strong> images and GIFs<\/strong> (where needed) to break up the&nbsp;text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>short sentences and paragraphs<\/strong> to avoid \u201cwalls of&nbsp;text\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>simple words<\/strong> that everyone can understand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Write as you speak<\/strong> to make things conversational<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Read your copy out loud<\/strong> (when editing) to smooth the&nbsp;flow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C. Don\u2019t forget your on-page SEO<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your on-page SEO is the \u201cicing\u201d on the cake that helps make it doubly clear to Google and searchers that your page is relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the basics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use the keyword in the title (if possible)<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-heading-tags-important\/377592\/\">Google confirmed<\/a> the importance of headings in 2020. If it\u2019s difficult, don\u2019t shoehorn the keyword\u2014use a close variation instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use short, descriptive URLs<\/strong> \u2013 A descriptive URL, usually the keyword, helps searchers understand what a page is about before clicking.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Write a compelling meta description<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s not a ranking factor, but it further helps entice searchers to click on your result.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use descriptive alt text<\/strong> \u2013 This helps Google understand images better.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Link to relevant internal and external resources<\/strong> \u2013 Linking to relevant internal and external resources helps visitors navigate your website and find more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in learning more about SEO and creating SEO content?
