Why should you do video marketing? Here are a few reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.b49qnkjyshd0\">1. Video is accessible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You watch it. I watch&nbsp;it. We all do. Videos are everywhere. Go to any major metropolitan area like New York or London, and you\u2019ll see videos playing on massive billboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only that, today, you can <em>literally<\/em>&nbsp;watch them on any device\u2014your smartphone, tablet, PC, TV, and so&nbsp;on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, in a 2018 study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/272835\/share-of-internet-users-who-watch-online-videos\/\">85% of U.S. internet users<\/a>&nbsp;watched online video content every month. Video allows you to demonstrate concepts faster and more clearly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching a video is an interactive experience. You\u2019re using both your senses of hearing and sight. Viewers can actually see something in action, be it a product or a concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare that to text-based content. Not only are you limited to just sight, but you also can\u2019t see something in action. You have to imagine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, one of my hobbies is breakdancing. So let\u2019s say I wanted to learn the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windmill_(b-boy_move)\">windmill<\/a>&nbsp;and had to learn how to do it from this text-based description:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>We\u2019re going to start off by kicking into our backspin. And when we get to this position, we\u2019re going to turn onto our head and my left&nbsp;hand.<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I would have given up on my dreams of becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Bull_BC_One\">Red Bull BC One<\/a> champion within seconds of starting. For example, the Ahrefs blog team has created hundreds of articles. Yet no one has ever called us \u201cmentors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, people even get our authors confused. They may think that an article written by our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michalpecanek\">Michal Pec\u00e1nek<\/a>&nbsp;was written by me&nbsp;instead. This never happens with video, as it is impossible to watch one and confuse Sam with our head of content, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joshuachardwick\">Joshua Hardwick<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.6felkg71ypy\">4. Video allows you to reach audiences on major platforms like YouTube<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/press\/\">YouTube has<\/a>&nbsp;over 2 billion monthly active users. The only way to reach them is to produce videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1267892\/tiktok-global-mau\/\">TikTok has<\/a>&nbsp;over 1 billion monthly active users. But it\u2019s not the only type of marketing video you can create. Here are more options you can consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.3zheh6512ljs\">1. Brand videos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of brand videos is to raise awareness around your brand, products, or services. You\u2019ve probably seen plenty\u2014a lot of them are ads on YouTube. After watching your videos, your audience should know your brand name and have an idea of what <em>exactly <\/em>it is you&nbsp;do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.yl3npsfrz388\">B. Education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal here is to create videos that teach your customers how to solve their problems, especially those that your products help&nbsp;with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is basically what we do with our channel: We create tutorials on SEO and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/digital-marketing-strategies\/\">marketing strategies<\/a>, then show our viewers how our tools make the processes easier and more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.ycjdqm8ve1y6\">C. Entertainment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is pretty self-explanatory. If you are subscribed to Netflix or Disney+, you already know what this looks&nbsp;like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/redbull\/videos\">Red Bull YouTube channel<\/a>&nbsp;does a great job of creating series and videos around extreme sports, effectively drawing in its target customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.2u214odopfgl\">3. Create the video(s)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since your audience, goals, and creative process will differ from us (and everyone else), it is almost impossible to tell you <strong>exactly <\/strong>what to create or how to create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we can discuss a few subcategories that may guide you in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.wvfl4xclpvwp\">A. Planning the&nbsp;video<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you begin recording or filming the video, you need to plan it out. Specifically, you need to know the topic you\u2019re creating content about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This depends entirely on your&nbsp;goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your goal is to create a brand video, ad, or storytelling series, then it\u2019s really up to your creativity and the concept you want to show. Video length<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The length of your video is usually determined by your primary objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a brand awareness video can be as short as 15 seconds and usually won\u2019t exceed a couple of minutes. Educational content is usually anywhere from five to 120 minutes. Our videos are around 7-20 minutes long, while a webinar can be up to an&nbsp;hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entertainment-style videos can also vary in duration. This can range from 10 to 180 minutes, depending on the format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.xsfmrspm9ihp\">C. Scripting your&nbsp;video<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you\u2019re blessed with incredible improvisation skills like Dave Chappelle, we highly recommend that you script your&nbsp;video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will make your video recording smoother, prevent bad speaking habits like \u201cums\u201d and \u201cahs,\u201d and so on. The last thing you want to do is to go off on a random tangent or click the wrong link in your screencast and end up losing the attention of your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For educational videos, we\u2019ve found a script format that works well for&nbsp;us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Problem <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Lead with the problem your video is solving<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teaser <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Show that there\u2019s a solution to the problem without giving it&nbsp;away<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solution <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Teach how to solve the problem<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For brand and entertaining videos, again, there\u2019s no fixed way of doing things. It\u2019s up to how you want to tell your story. If you\u2019re looking for something more \u201cadvanced,\u201d you can\u2019t go wrong with a DSLR camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Teleprompter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teleprompter\">Wikipedia<\/a>, a teleprompter is a display device that prompts the person who is speaking with an electronic visual text of a speech or script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use it if you\u2019re scripting your videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audio<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sam\u2019s opinion, this is even more important than the camera equipment you\u2019re using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this depends on the type of videos you\u2019re recording, here are Sam\u2019s suggestions based on using a&nbsp;DSLR:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shotgun mic<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Good if the subject is in one place (i.e., a \u201ctalking head\u201d&nbsp;video)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lavalier mic<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Works well if you have multiple subjects or you\u2019re moving around a&nbsp;lot<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lighting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people prefer natural lighting, but Sam finds it hard to control. Sam uses two rugs and a couch; others may use thick moving blankets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have the budget, you may even opt for foam or acoustic panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.x5jodq64trha\">E. Editing the&nbsp;video<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019re done with all the recording, it\u2019s time to edit the video. There are many people who feel awkward in front of the camera. But these roadblocks can be overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some common struggles and how to overcome them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.60bq74scs1ft\">1. I\u2019m not good in front of the camera<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch our videos, and Sam may look like a complete natural in front of the camera. But that only came after years of practice. And still, Sam feels awkward when he has to record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t feel like you have to be \u201cnatural\u201d or get it right the first time. The \u201ctrick\u201d to making videos is actually in the editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B-rolls like screencasts, animations, and text screens help to take the attention off Sam while creating a better educational experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to combat the jitters is to use the teleprompter. This helps you deliver information without worrying about going off on various tangents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.cwpuzpn7p81p\">2. I don\u2019t have equipment or the budget to buy&nbsp;it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You already have one of the most powerful cameras with you. It\u2019s right in your pocket, and it\u2019s called your smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/03\/movies-shot-on-iphones-unsane-tangerine-shorts-1201941565\/\">tons of movies<\/a>&nbsp;made just from phone filmography. You\u2019re overthinking it if you think your smartphone isn\u2019t good enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, when we first started our YouTube channel in 2015, Tim, our chief marketing officer, recorded all his tutorials on a GoPro. Make your content go the extra mile by repurposing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can turn your video script into a blog post. We do this often at Ahrefs. In fact, this blog post you\u2019re reading was originally a script (with some additions) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QCgDIhvFkCM\">one of our videos<\/a>. We\u2019ve also done this for other videos too\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/affiliate-marketing\/\">this post<\/a>&nbsp;was originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W-nbsnXtSZI\">a video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also turn your video into multiple shorter videos. With YouTube Shorts, this can be done quite easily. Slidebean<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Slidebean is a pitch deck design platform for startups and small businesses. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/Slidebean\/videos\">YouTube channel<\/a>&nbsp;covers topics related to startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I actually reached out to Caya, Slidebean\u2019s CEO, two years ago to ask about the platform\u2019s YouTube strategy. From what he told me, the strategy was twofold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A recurring video series about startups that targeted startup-related keywords.<\/li>\n<li>A series called \u201cCompany Forensics\u201d focused on targeting topics higher up the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-funnels\/\">marketing funnel<\/a>&nbsp;and, therefore, generating brand awareness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-default aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/21-slidebean-youtube.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Company Forensics\u201d playlist on YouTube \"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.qji2k0dghzo9\">3. ClickUp<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike both Slidebean and us, ClickUp has taken an approach that is more creative. Rather than produce educational content, ClickUp has decided to go for the entertainment angle. ClickUp\u2019s videos seem relatively high-budget, and the main purpose is likely to raise awareness of its&nbsp;brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its space is extremely competitive, with entrenched brands like Monday.com, Asana, Trello, and so on.
