episode page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I was a guest on <a href=\"https:\/\/mastermind.fm\/\">the Mastermind.fm podcast<\/a> a while ago, and there\u2019s a link back to Ahrefs on <a href=\"https:\/\/mastermind.fm\/episode-105-seo-research-with-joshua-hardwick-from-ahrefs\/\">my episode page<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img podcast link building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Podcast link building is pretty straightforward and involves four&nbsp;steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find industry podcasts<\/li>\n<li>Vet the&nbsp;shows<\/li>\n<li>Pitch them<\/li>\n<li>Record your episode<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go through these step by&nbsp;step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.tarlpm8fbdpm\">1. Find industry podcasts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first port of call is to build a big list of potential podcasts. There are a few ways to do this. I recommend creating a blank spreadsheet, running through all of these tactics, and adding podcasts to the sheet as you&nbsp;go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.hxdg2lf8q6j0\">Search Google<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Google is your best friend when it comes to finding podcasts in your niche. Just search for the best industry podcasts, and you should see plenty of listicles. You may also see a podcast carousel in the search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2-searching-for-podcasts.jpg\" alt=\"2-searching-for-podcasts\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see a podcast that looks promising, add it to your sheet. Note down the name of the podcast and its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3-podcasts-list.png\" alt=\"3-podcasts-list\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.h0efl1hx1azd\">Search Apple Podcasts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the Apple Podcasts app and search for your topic. Hit \u201csee all\u201d on the shows to see all the podcasts related to your&nbsp;topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/4-searching-apple-podcasts.jpg\" alt=\"4-searching-apple-podcasts\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note down any promising podcasts in your&nbsp;sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.h042nm6ikhw7\">Reverse engineer prolific podcasters<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know a prolific podcast guest in your industry, plug their website\u2019s homepage into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. Then choose the \u201cExact URL\u201d mode from the dropdown, go to the <strong>Backlinks<\/strong> report, and filter for results with \u201cepisode\u201d in the referring page&nbsp;title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/5-finding-podcasts-site-explorer.jpg\" alt=\"5-finding-podcasts-site-explorer\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Look through the results and add any relevant podcasts to your spreadsheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.7rbznqqa0uw5\">2. Vet the&nbsp;shows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of the podcasts on your list will be worth pitching to, and some will be more of a priority than others. This is why vetting is so crucial, as you don\u2019t want to waste your time pitching the wrong&nbsp;shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a simple process for vetting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/how-to-vet-podcasts.png\" alt=\"How-to-vet-podcasts\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s best to start with the link data, as you can automate that process using Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/batch-analysis\">Batch Analysis tool<\/a>. Just paste in the websites from your list, export the data, then copy and paste the Domain Rating (DR) data and merge that with your existing list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6-batch-analysis-link-data.png\" alt=\"6-batch-analysis-link-data\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/7-podcast-list-with-dr.png\" alt=\"7-podcast-list-with-dr\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DR shows the relative strength of a website\u2019s backlink profile compared to other sites in our database. As such, links from pages on high DR websites tend to pass more \u201cauthority.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no need to exclude podcasts with low DR websites from your list, but it\u2019s usually better to prioritize those with high DR websites if links are your priority. To do that, sort your list by DR from highest to lowest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8-podcast-list-with-dr-sorted.png\" alt=\"8-podcast-list-with-dr-sorted\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s simply a case of working your way through the list to check whether the podcast:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Links to guests.<\/li>\n<li>Is still running.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> You\u2019ll already know the answer to the first question for podcasts you found using Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>. <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If both of these things are true, keep the podcast on your list. If not, remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">NOTE<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that links aren\u2019t the only benefit of being a guest on a podcast. If you come across one that doesn\u2019t link to guests but has a huge audience, it may be worth pitching to\u2014simply for exposure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.uib87fceb1nv\">3. Pitch the&nbsp;shows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pitching to a show is quite straightforward. You either follow its application process or reach out by email and pitch yourself as a&nbsp;guest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always follow the application process if the show has one, as whoever\u2019s reading the pitch will probably ignore pitches from those who can\u2019t follow simple instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the TechSEO podcast has a guest submission form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/9-podcast-submission-form.png\" alt=\"9-podcast-submission-form\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It won\u2019t make much sense to reach out to Dan (the podcast co-host) by email here because he clearly doesn\u2019t want to receive pitches that way\u2014and he\u2019s unlikely to want a guest who can\u2019t follow basic instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the podcast doesn\u2019t have an application process, you\u2019ll need to hunt down the host\u2019s email and contact them that way (<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/find-email-address\/\">here are six ways to find email addresses<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the pitch itself, everyone\u2019s advice here will be slightly different. But generally speaking, you\u2019re going to want to cover the three&nbsp;Ws:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<strong>Who? <\/strong>Explain who you are, who you work for,&nbsp;etc.<\/li><li>\n<strong>Why? <\/strong>Explain why you\u2019d be a good podcast guest. Sell yourself.<\/li><li>\n<strong>What? <\/strong>Explain what you want to talk&nbsp;about.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t pluck your \u201cwhat\u201d out of thin air. It should be something that\u2019s likely to appeal to the show\u2019s audience, hasn\u2019t been covered before, and aligns with your expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/how-to-find-podcast-topics.png\" alt=\"How-to-find-podcast-topics\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible, pitch something you\u2019ve written or talked about before. You can then use that as your notes for the podcast episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if I were reaching out to the TechSEO podcast, it would make sense for me to pitch an episode about duplicate content. This is because the topic clearly appeals to the show\u2019s audience and is <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/duplicate-content\/\">something I\u2019ve written about already<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while looking through its episode history, I realized the show has seemingly yet to cover this&nbsp;topic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/10-podcast-topic.jpg\" alt=\"10-podcast-topic\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">PRO TIP<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>Send pitches in batches, as most hosts won\u2019t respond. If you can send five to 10 per week, then you should be able to build up a pretty consistent flow of podcast appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.7e7vrm4bef0r\">4. Record the podcast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recording your podcast is the easy part because the host typically handles most of the heavy lifting. You just need to show up on time and answer their questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few tips to make sure things go smoothly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Invest in a decent microphone<\/li><li>Make sure you have a stable internet connection<\/li><li>Find a quiet place (no coffee shops)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, it\u2019ll be a few weeks before your episode goes live. Podcasts often attract links from listeners who reference guests in their own content. This makes hosting a podcast another way to potentially attract backlinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if we plug Authority Hackers into <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>, go to the <strong>Best by Links <\/strong>report, and filter for pages with \u201c#\u201d in the titles, we see that quite a few of its podcast episodes attracted backlinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/11-podcast-backlinks.png\" alt=\"11-podcast-backlinks\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sidenote\"><div class=\"sidenote-title\">Sidenote.<\/div> We\u2019re using \u201c#\u201d as a footprint because Authority Hacker uses the #000 format for the episode number in the page&nbsp;title.&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, hosting a podcast is a lot of work, so it\u2019s not something we recommend doing solely for link building purposes. Links are more of an additional benefit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.svbv0fobsetb\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Podcasts are a great way to get more links and exposure for your brand. You can also mention other relevant content during the podcast to expose it to a wider audience, and that may lead to even more backlinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Got questions?
