The answer depends on your goals and budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hiring a team is right for anyone who wants to build and scale their SEO while also training people who will become assets to their company.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not for those who aren\u2019t willing to go through the lengthy process of finding, hiring, managing, and potentially firing people and going through the whole process again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also not right for those looking to minimize their in-house overheads, as they\u2019ll typically pay a $30K-60K salary per team member, plus an additional $2.5K to $4.5K per year in SEO tools. This means building a team (1-10 people) will range from $32.5K to $300K+ per&nbsp;year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the benefits of building an SEO&nbsp;team:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You get full control over your&nbsp;SEO.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re not reliant on third parties for your business\u2019s income from search, as is the case when hiring an SEO agency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll often save money (compared to hiring an SEO agency, which usually costs anywhere from $3K to tens of thousands of dollars per&nbsp;month)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, hiring an <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-does-an-seo-agency-do\/\">SEO agency<\/a> means a lot less work finding and training employees, less overhead, and you can have an expert come in and do everything for&nbsp;you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-title\">Pro Tip<\/div><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n\n\n\n<p>One way to save money on an in-house SEO team is by working with freelancers. If you were more concerned with technical SEO than getting links, then you could simply hire two technical SEO specialists\u2014or more. Whatever the needs of the business, you need to reflect that within the SEO&nbsp;team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. As NordVPN is a big, well-known company, it\u2019s not surprising that they have a large team for on-site and off-site SEO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also interesting to see that they have a dedicated video SEO manager\u2014not something every organization has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what it involves and why they need&nbsp;it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"small\"><div class=\"quote-content\">\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Video SEO role at NordVPN is focused around optimizing our YouTube videos to rank in the Google and boost our brand visibility. Small agency team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/what-does-an-seo-agency-do\/\">SEO agencies<\/a> I\u2019ve worked at have typically hired people with a broad skill set. They will have a preferred specialism, but that may not be obvious through their job&nbsp;title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Larger agency team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to larger agencies, the team structure is usually designed to reflect the demands of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/enterprise-seo\/\">enterprise SEO<\/a> clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a larger SEO team structure I have seen work. For example, if the client wanted a Google Tag Manager (GTM) specialist\u2014they might look to find a dedicated person for this SEO&nbsp;role.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. International SEO&nbsp;team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a team structure created specifically for <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ecommerce-seo\/\">e-commerce SEO<\/a> teams working across multiple countries (courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seomindset.net\/crafting-the-perfect-seo-team-ecommerce\/\">SEOmindset<\/a>.) In this example, the whole agency works collaboratively towards a quarterly target\u2014and it\u2019s no different for the SEO&nbsp;team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visualized, the team structure is flat. Determine your goals and hiring needs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The size of your team depends on what you\u2019re trying to do and how much money you&nbsp;have.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you should do before hiring anyone is to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-competitor-analysis\/\" data-ahr=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/competitive-analysis\/\">figure out your competitive landscape<\/a>. You can do this using Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/content-gap\">Content Gap tool<\/a>. You\u2019re trying to figure out three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kinds of keywords am I going&nbsp;after?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How competitive are these keywords?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What roles do I need to fill the&nbsp;most?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you currently have a lot of content but it\u2019s not ranking, you\u2019ll need to allocate more budget to link building, especially if you\u2019re targeting highly competitive keywords. But if you don\u2019t have much content yet, your focus should be more on building a content team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two quick ways you can use Ahrefs to determine your team\u2019s needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Use the SERP overview in Keywords Explorer to determine if you need&nbsp;links<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The SERP overview allows you to see what pages are ranking for a given keyword and how many links those pages have. You can also see each page URL\u2019s Domain Rating (DR)&nbsp;score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using this tool, you can determine if your pages need more links in order to beat the competition. (I say \u201cmay\u201d because Google\u2019s search algorithm is complicated, and we can never say with 100% certainty that one thing alone is the cause of rankings.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a lot of content already and\u2014after reviewing your keywords\u2014find, on average, you\u2019re not beating your competitors due to a lack of backlinks, then you should prioritize putting together a link building team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Use the Site Audit tool to check your technical SEO<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-audit\">Site Audit<\/a> allows you to take a peek inside your website\u2019s technical SEO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you run an audit on your URL, you\u2019ll be given a Health Score that shows you how healthy your site\u2019s technical SEO is. Better yet, you can give them the audit report. They will know exactly what they need to do in order to fix your site\u2019s issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Find your talent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve determined <em>who<\/em> you need, you have to learn <em>how<\/em> to find and hire&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to find people to work for your company. These include searching online job boards, asking friends and family, going through talent agencies, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few great options include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/hire\/c\/info\/job-boards\">Indeed<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziprecruiter.com\/post-a-job\">Zip Recruiter<\/a> for general job listings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/problogger.com\/jobs\/\">ProBlogger<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/\">Mediabistro<\/a> for finding writers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/\">Upwork<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiverr.com\/\">Fiverr<\/a> for hiring freelancers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also check out some of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/best-job-boards-for-marketers\/\">these job boards for marketers<\/a>. Set up your task management software<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve found your team members, you\u2019ll need to keep them organized and efficient. This is where task management software like Trello or Asana comes&nbsp;in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve used both. But I prefer Asana, as it\u2019s more robust. I have separate projects for separate businesses, as well as a \u201cpersonal tasks\u201d project for things I need to take care of that my employees and colleagues don\u2019t need to&nbsp;see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your SEO team, you can create a team called \u201cSEO,\u201d and then create projects for each SEO process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can create a \u201cContent\u201d project, which only includes the content team and the upcoming, in-progress, and finished content; a \u201cDeveloper\u201d project to assign tasks to and work with your developer; and an \u201cOutreach\u201d project for link building and content promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of one of the content planning boards I use in&nbsp;Asana:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"761\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image4-1.png\" alt=\"Planning board, via Asana\n\" class=\"wp-image-168782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image4-1.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image4-1-680x259.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image4-1-768x292.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image4-1-1536x585.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, your SEO manager can have access to and oversee each project. They can comment directly on the tasks within Asana to keep everyone moving. And having an in-house team gives you a competitive advantage. This can also save you some money\u2014especially on things like link building, where links can go for hundreds of dollars apiece (if you pay someone else for&nbsp;them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is a big commitment to hire and manage an entire department, so this method isn\u2019t for everyone.
