It Depends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"intro-txt\">An out-of-stock (OOS) event, or stockout, happens when a business runs out of inventory for a product that a customer wants to purchase. This can happen online or in physical stores.<\/div>\n\n\n\nThough it\u2019s a joke in the SEO community, \u201cit depends\u201d is really the answer when dealing with out-of-stock products on e-commerce websites. There are many situational decisions, with each having trade-offs, when it comes to SEO and user experience.\n\n\n\n<p>Many content management systems have built-in rules for handling out-of-stock products, but that logic can often be changed. Some setups may have no built-in logic at all. In these cases, you get to make the rules and work with your developers to implement what you&nbsp;want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the different scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.qf5pqg7fbm94\">Permanently out of&nbsp;stock<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With permanently out-of-stock products, you know the products are gone and won\u2019t be back. Does that mean you should get rid of the pages? Not necessarily. You have a few options here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.7mi08x40ws76\">Option 1. Redirect the&nbsp;page<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a similar product that you want to push people toward, you may want to <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/301-redirects\/\">301 redirect<\/a>&nbsp;the old product to the new product. This will also maintain any link value if the pages are similar enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the pages are not similar enough or you redirect to a category page or your homepage, then these pages may be treated as a soft 404 and the value from links may not be preserved. If these other locations are where you want users to go, then do the redirect anyway. It\u2019s possible the links will still pass&nbsp;value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because most websites have removed many products in the past, you may want to see if there are any opportunities to redirect old pages to relevant, current pages and reclaim the value from the&nbsp;links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find those opportunities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paste your domain into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;(also accessible for free in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/webmaster-tools\">Ahrefs Webmaster Tools<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the <strong>Best by links<\/strong>&nbsp;report<\/li>\n<li>Use the response code filter and check \u201c404 not found\u201d and \u201c410&nbsp;gone\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I usually sort this by \u201cReferring domains\u201d or \u201cUR\u201d to look for top opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 1610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/1-redirect-old-products.jpg\" alt=\"Use the Best by links report to find redirect opportunities of old product pages with links\" width=\"1600\" height=\"788\"><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Best <\/strong><strong>by links<\/strong>&nbsp;report.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When redirecting a page, many systems will automatically remove <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/internal-links-for-seo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internal links<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from categories, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/faceted-navigation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/seo\/glossary\/sitemap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sitemaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and internal search pages. In some systems, you may need to remove these links manually or there may be additional links from blog pages or elsewhere that you\u2019ll want to remove.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To find these links, check the <strong>Links<\/strong>&nbsp;report in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-audit\">Site Audit<\/a>,&nbsp;which is also free if you sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/webmaster-tools\">Ahrefs Webmaster Tools<\/a>.&nbsp;Click into the area marked \u201cRedirect\u201d on internal links to get a list of the redirected links and the pages that have those&nbsp;links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 1610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2-redirected-internal-links.png\" alt=\"See all the internal links you have that are redirecting to other pages\" width=\"1600\" height=\"629\"><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Internal links that redirect.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.tdu1rjecctqv\">Option 2. Delete the&nbsp;page<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are removing a page and there is no relevant, current product, you may want to simply delete the page and return a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/http-status-codes\/\">404 or 410 status code<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we mentioned in the first option, you also want to make sure that internal links to these pages are removed. This removal often happens automatically for many of the links to the page (but probably not all of them), so check for any remaining ones by crawling your&nbsp;site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find these links, check the <strong>Links<\/strong>&nbsp;report in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-audit\">Site Audit<\/a>.&nbsp;Look for \u201cBroken\u201d on internal links. You can click into this chart to get a list of the broken links and the pages that link to&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 1524px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3-broken-internal-links.png\" alt=\"See all the broken internal links on your site\" width=\"1514\" height=\"732\"><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Broken internal links.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.5b2ems475n0x\">Option 3. Leave the page&nbsp;live<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The product is gone, and most people will want to get rid of the page either by deleting it or redirecting it. But there are plenty of valid reasons to leave a page&nbsp;live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could have useful resources, such as documentation, that may take some burden off a support team.&nbsp;Perhaps,&nbsp;the page is still getting a decent amount of search traffic that you want to funnel into other products you offer.&nbsp;You can use Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a>&nbsp;to check the organic search traffic for the&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/4-organic-traffic.png\" alt=\"Use Site Explorer to check the organic traffic of a page\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re leaving the page live for now, I don\u2019t recommend removing internal links like you would in the other options. Removing the links can hurt your rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also when potential SEO benefits clash with user experience.&nbsp;Landing on a page\u2014where there\u2019s nothing to buy\u2014either from the internal search or from a category page won\u2019t be a great experience for a&nbsp;user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may want to add a filter so users can remove out-of-stock products. Or you may want to show these products last in any listings. Deprioritizing the pages like this means they may also not rank as well, but I generally recommend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, you may consider these pages to no longer be useful and, accordingly, may want to redirect or delete them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.zcgmimqnajvp\">Temporarily out of stock, coming back&nbsp;soon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You&nbsp;want to leave these pages live. If so, there are some useful actions you can take or automate in your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are features that may be useful to you and your customers, such as estimates of when a product will be back in stock, a wait list, or a way to sign up to be notified when a product has been restocked.&nbsp;Some stores are even offering their customers lotteries to purchase items when they\u2019re back in stock, e.g., the Newegg shuffle program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-139573\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/5-purchase-lottery.png\" alt=\"Some ecommerce sites are turning to purchase lotteries to let customers have a chance at buying scarce items\" width=\"396\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/5-purchase-lottery.png 528w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/5-purchase-lottery-302x425.png 302w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.iqljirtcmgtt\">Temporarily out of stock, may not be coming back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, you have a product that you just don\u2019t know when or if you\u2019ll be carrying again. In all of these cases, I\u2019d make the product less visible on the website so users are less likely to see them. Let\u2019s look at the options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.cesj5puzhfdy\">Option 1. Leave it&nbsp;live<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned before, there are several reasons you may want to leave a page live, including capturing search traffic to funnel people to other products or using the page for support or documentation purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t delete the internal links in this situation. Eventually, you may want to redirect or delete these pages when you realize the relevant products are not going to come back or the pages are no longer useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.o9j8gg6p7fzz\">Option 2. Noindex<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll say that using noindex is not my favorite option, and I don\u2019t typically recommend it. It\u2019s usually not the best idea to do this because it can cut off the flow of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-pagerank\/\">PageRank<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I only mention it because, in some systems, noindex is used as the trigger to stop the product from being shown to users. On the bright side, products marked noindex will come back in search results pretty quickly after Google recrawls the&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.lapx2um5kqn2\">Option 3. Leave it live for a while and delete or redirect it&nbsp;later<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point, you may just want to make a decision to treat this product as if it\u2019s not coming back and delete or redirect it. When you do this is up to you, but a lot of people use logic based on the demand or when a certain amount of time has passed. In the short term, I\u2019d keep the internal links live\u2014but&nbsp;you\u2019ll want to clean them up&nbsp;later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.pq9gme7dck1n\">How to find&nbsp;out-of-stock products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should have a list of out-of-stock&nbsp;products from some data source that handles your product inventory or possibly within the content management system\u2019s&nbsp;backend. In case you don\u2019t have that list, you may want to crawl the website with Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-audit\">Site Audit<\/a>&nbsp;and search the HTML code to find pages that have your out-of-stock&nbsp;message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 1610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6-search-html.png\" alt=\"Search within your HTML for out-of-stock products using Site Audit\" width=\"1600\" height=\"533\"><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Search for out-of-stock products.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.19wg8jyt5db0\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you\u2019ve seen, you have a lot of options when it comes to out-of-stock products. What I generally recommend is you set some rules that you\u2019re comfortable with and just go with them. The logic you use is really up to you.
